Magic Happens returns to Disneyland and Festival of Fantasy never really left the Magic Kingdom. Join as we litigate the two parades you can experience on a daily basis at each Kingdom park.
Which will win? The seasoned veteran with classic music and characters seen by millions? The upstart with new music written by an internet star? You'll have to tune in for all the song excerpts, all the analysis, all the ambivalence. Also, I think Dan has a new obsession.
We had a fun time recording After Hours on this one as well. To have a listen, join us on Patreon at https://patreon.com/earzup

[00:00:00] Hi, I'm your inner dream monologue, and you're fast asleep, so I'll be quick.
[00:00:08] Great job using the Colgate Optic White Overnight Teeth Whitening Pen before bed.
[00:00:13] When used as directed, it gives you a visibly whiter smile in just seven days.
[00:00:17] So while I fly and talk to animals, you're removing teeth stains with ease.
[00:00:22] Sweet dreams.
[00:00:23] And when you wake up, keep on living life to the brightest.
[00:00:27] Colgate Optic White. The Beatles and, uh, yeah. All right. Today's episode. I'm Dan. Yeah. It's Dan. All right. Uh, today's episode is the case of the parade says all I got. So as I, so we were talking on after hours before hours and Jimmy was like, oh, I don't know if we should do parades because it's just kind of like whatever kind of throwing it together.
[00:01:41] But here's the thing.
[00:01:43] I think I understand that, that like there can say is really that mine is not mine is not throw away effort or parade and there's stuff to talk about. Oh Jeremy's bad. And was everybody saying where's poochy? And, um, excuse me, leave it in. And, um,
[00:04:01] Go ahead. Go for a chance. If I say something to me likes, you're going to hear the sound.
[00:04:06] I'm hijacking this shit.
[00:04:07] Yeah.
[00:04:08] Crap.
[00:04:09] Just sit back and wait.
[00:04:10] Let me.
[00:04:12] Oh, M.H.
[00:04:12] Point.
[00:04:13] That is the file.
[00:04:15] I'm not starting.
[00:04:17] It's the it's the other.
[00:04:18] Here it is.
[00:04:20] That's a try for Twin Peaks.
[00:04:21] It's ironic because that's what the city says before someone gets killed.
[00:04:25] So anyway, wait, what if I'm going to keep making. And that was in magic happens is the first new parade since then. Now there's a history of lay mass parades at Disneyland. We have, and this is going backwards, Mickey's sound station operate and celebrate a street party. I liked sound station. I'm sorry. You have lowered standards
[00:05:43] because you're used to the magic king of parades. I ate a hotan parade, which was a pretty big deal. I think I said Lion King, and they didn't do anything for Tarzan because they built a tree house. Hunchback had a festival, which kind of broke that system, and that's where we got to the lame-ass parades that are just like... Hercules had a parade. Hercules had a parade. Thank you.
[00:07:01] I forgot about that one. That was my first job. It didn't have the first thing I did after the
[00:08:03] more of a reason to change it up because the locals, characters are just like wandering through the streets,
[00:08:06] doing random stuff at Disneyland,
[00:08:08] which is like kind of nice.
[00:08:11] And at Disney World, they're kept hermetically sealed
[00:08:14] in like these special environments
[00:08:16] that you have to like make arrangements to see them.
[00:08:20] It's less rare to see characters.
[00:08:23] So it makes a lot of sense actually
[00:08:26] to have the parades think Disney World, when they wanted to do, you know, obviously the idea was for it to be bigger and maybe better.
[00:09:41] So maybe they wanted to also... is there something to say also because of the space available at Disney World that they can have a Jepetto workshop land because they have the space to do it? Yeah, and I mean, again, listener, if you're like shaking your phone, I get it. We're using that as an example. It's an example. Yeah. I think that it I think that the intent was can have a parade because the music's already written. And you build the floats and you have the characters, most of the it's not going to be face characters for the most part because, you know, well, I guess I take that back. Anyway, so you have the musicals that you put them in a parade rather than taking the time to build an attraction around this thing that may or may not be successful. The paradesmaid is the, this generation is very Poppins and we can. Yeah, that's fair. Um, where, and so I think, uh, okay. So Eric, do you want to tell us the history of parades that are called Mickey's magical whatever? Yeah. Did you first, did you know?
[00:13:40] No.
[00:13:41] No.
[00:13:42] The first parade at, at Walt Disney World was called character parade.
[00:13:48] All right. of I, right? That's, that's one of our slogans. March of this year. Sorry. Just a police. Do you want to know? Do you want to know? Do you want to see the original President Garfield's inaugural march? You can do it at U of I.
[00:15:03] Okay. All right. So, yes, the original.
[00:16:05] cavalcade of characters character parade not cavalcade of characters. They were different things
[00:16:10] I before we go further. I just want to reiterate I am not
[00:16:17] Saying that this is a bad idea for Disney World to go in this direction. I think it's a great idea for them to go in this direction
[00:16:23] however, I feel like and I could be wrong Eric tell me if I'm wrong I feel like
[00:16:25] there is a trend of uh-huh conceptual interesting
[00:17:26] to you guys heard it live, I will reengage and be able to post these episodes again. Oh, go. Will you? Yes, I will. Oh, well, okay. I'll send you the file.
[00:17:32] Well, I need to get access. That's one of the notes I just made. I need to get back into the
[00:17:36] email and be able to access because I can't access my phone without the email. So I will There were some others, but those last few were 2021, not 2021, 2001. There are fewer numbers in that. 2001 through 2014. Yes. Thank you. Jimmy, thank you.
[00:19:01] I appreciate it.
[00:19:03] You won't. Got it. Yeah. Which is a cool. That's an episode to drag into light themselves on fire, which drag Maleficent versus Maleficent. Why haven't we thought of that? That's that's a good one.
[00:20:21] All right. Daniel, you're up.
[00:20:21] Right.
[00:20:22] So about the spray, about magic happens.
[00:20:27] It was worked on by create. Yeah, no, it just became, yeah. They kind of just shifted gears. And then people that Disney fatigue for some time and they just, you know, cavalcade of terrible things. Thank God that's gone. Jordan Peterson, again, not that one, conceptualized magic happens from the ground up.
[00:21:40] Now his background,
[00:21:44] meant to do this first, the parade, but that's sort of where they're drawing from that element of fashion. So that brought them to Todrick Hall, who was, he is a, my, he's an internet guy. Yeah, he did YouTube stuff. He's been on American Idol. He's done a lot of interesting things.
[00:24:06] One is the theme song, which I will ask you to play in just a moment, and a song for the Grand Finale. And the finale includes musical nods to past Disney Entertainment, weaving in a lot of different themes to different parades and fireworks stuff.
[00:24:16] As a whole, it is very self-aware as a parade, and, no, not yet. No, magic happens. Oh, magic happens theme. Okay.
[00:25:43] Hang on.
[00:26:45] Sometimes it overlaps with it getting dark, but it's not an itinerary. Okay.
[00:26:49] So we don't need to play the whole thing.
[00:26:51] So then this folds, they fold in, you know, other things from other properties,
[00:26:58] and we'll get to that when we get to the parade itself.
[00:27:01] So that's kind of just a bit about the development.
[00:27:03] Eric, you want to tell us about the development of your shitty parade? parade. It is an experienced parade and it brings a certain amount of wisdom and experience to the parks. I'm more focused on making jokes than actually telling fats. And that's what people come here for is fats, not jokes.
[00:29:41] Designed by Richard Imprata, the parade, he created World of Color at DCA. He created Hong Kong Disneyland's use ever, but I remember watching it the first time. I was like, oh, it's some phalenia crap. This is pretty cool.
[00:32:25] So we have some dancers coming and they're dancing in a circle that it's like, okay, now here's our version of that. Then we got Moana. Moana's on a float. The songs included in that are, we know the way and how far I'll go. And this is all folded into Magic Happens. It's kind of similar to that, how they fold in the music on Main Street Electrical Parade.
[00:33:40] It's kind of like a little bit of this
[00:33:42] and then a little bit of that one
[00:33:43] and then a little bit of this one
[00:33:44] and then a little bit of the other one and back and forth. I haven't seen it, but it's in the article that I referenced. And the heart of Tofiti's there. Moana's pet pig, Pua, is hanging out with Maui. And then we have more dancers representing the Kakamora. They carry little Kakamora dolls. And they have their...
[00:35:00] Have you seen Moana? Dan? I have. A couple times.
[00:35:04] Okay. Okay. Just making sure. Why? Did one are proud Corazon and remember me. Miguel strums the guitar of Ernesto de la Cruz. And he's connected to the land of the dead by a bridge of more than 30,000 Mary Golds. Don't know that they are actually Mary Golds, but they certainly look like them.
[00:36:24] Dante leaps across, turning into an albreche, albrehe. I've never known how to pronounce that on the way.
[00:37:23] We got the Enchanted Forest, the Frozen Horsey Things there, and all of our friends in the movie,
[00:37:25] Sven and Olaf are there.
[00:37:27] Large snowflake behind Elsa incorporates
[00:37:29] the four elemental symbols from the film,
[00:37:32] which represent water, fire, earth, and wind, and heart.
[00:37:37] And it's almost 39 feet long.
[00:37:41] It's the longest float in the parade,
[00:37:43] and there is snow in the form of snope.
[00:37:47] Dancers look a little bit like mummies, and this new thing is in a major key. And I noticed in looking into this that this, because the theme song is in a minor key, and so many of the other songs are in a major key, what's happening throughout the parade is that your brain is constantly dealing with tension and resolution,
[00:39:00] tension and resolution.
[00:39:02] So it's very, very cool what they did.
[00:39:06] And I had no idea they were doing this They're waiting to be chased. So you said it's a finale. Is this that's the end of the parade? A finale. Or that happens between each float. Well, the finale. So this, this, this music plays throughout a very long finale, which includes this, this is sort of where we get back to the sort of traditional
[00:40:23] cavalcade style parade.
[00:40:25] It's kind of a character dump.
[00:41:25] We have Sword and a Stone, Merlin's dancing around, and King Arthur is pulling out the stone.
[00:41:28] Everyone's dancing so much fun.
[00:41:30] Tiana and Evin are from the princess in the frog
[00:41:34] that everyone loves so much.
[00:41:35] And they're seeing immense,
[00:41:36] the swirl of golden flowers with a share kiss,
[00:41:39] completing their transformation back into human forms.
[00:41:43] And then we end with the final float.
[00:41:46] Again, this music is introduce a whole other song. Yeah.
[00:43:00] But it really works, at least for me.
[00:43:06] Are these disparate ideas? concept you had. What got me there and I basically went, oh my God, like in a classroom while I was doing this because a musician I really like, his name is Harold Bud, he does that constantly. And except he'll do it with like completely different keys and like complimentary, but the trick that he plays is
[00:44:21] he plays one hand on the piano is like kind of very low.
[00:44:25] And then the other parade is very aware of itself as a parade existing in the time that it exists in. Do you know my theory? My internet's slow. My theory is that the song came first and they just called the parade named it after
[00:45:47] the song. I love the brightness and the abstract of some of the costumes and I really liked you know sort of the sense that you shared about sort of the inspirations for the costume So I'd like to give a point for that It is happening again. I like the
[00:47:01] Grandiose nature of the floats
[00:48:03] sites are not helping me today. So I'm just gonna pipe it directly into the soundboard
[00:48:06] when I wanna do it, and it might be too loud or too soft.
[00:48:09] We'll find out.
[00:48:11] The parade begins with Cinderella, Tiana,
[00:48:16] and Belle with their respective princes.
[00:48:21] There.
[00:48:22] It's Belle before he's a prince, that's the beast.
[00:48:25] Correct, yes, yes.
[00:49:22] with their Prince characters for some time. And it was,
[00:49:23] Yeah, and at some point it's just another white dude
[00:49:26] with Brown hair.
[00:49:27] Yeah, it would have just been like,
[00:49:27] oh, that's the Prince with long hair.
[00:49:29] Where, what's he from again?
[00:49:31] Yeah, total.
[00:49:32] Yeah, without proof of what he would know.
[00:49:34] From that war.
[00:49:35] Yeah.
[00:49:37] All right, keep going, Eric, sorry.
[00:49:38] I don't know.
[00:49:40] Yeah, so in that particular float,
[00:49:45] yeah, it's a few float. There's a lot of movement on it. It's apparently 36 feet long. And there are some of the thugs from the movie on there as well. Then we have a little. It's called the smugly duckling. The snugly duckling.
[00:51:00] Smuggly, yes, yes.
[00:51:01] Then there's the little mermaid float aerial.
[00:51:05] Real quick, just point for that float.
[00:51:07] Oh, oh. By the way, she's not flopping off the float. Dan, like you said, she won't. Yeah. Yeah. She's totally fine on there. Scooting a lot. Ariel's okay. She's not flopping around.
[00:52:20] She's in a clam shell.
[00:52:23] She's got a tail.
[00:52:24] It's fine.
[00:52:25] Okay.
[00:52:26] They missed her. She's so relieved she can finally breathe. Oh, okay. All right. Peter Pan. This is another fun one. They're on the Jolly Roger. It's Pan fighting hook. There's a swinging anchor.
[00:53:40] The lost boys are dancing around.
[00:53:43] Very exciting. Sweet dreams. And when you wake up, keep on living life to the brightest. Colgate Optic White. Find it at all. Major retailers. And we're back. Wasn't that joke funny? That we get brave. A movie that does not get a lot of attention. That's true. These days. And yeah, so sure.
[00:55:02] It's a it's a it's a giant bagpipe.
[00:55:07] Oh, Merid Merid is up there.
[00:56:07] They had to change the way they put the bunting on Main Street so that this parade could go down Main Street.
[00:56:09] Eric, I'm watching a 2022 version of this parade and it goes directly from Peter Pan
[00:56:15] to Maleficent.
[00:56:16] There is no Marita.
[00:56:18] Oh, they...
[00:56:19] I think they possibly cut it.
[00:56:21] They cut Marita?
[00:56:22] Yeah.
[00:56:23] I think they might have cut Marita because I don't see it in the 2022 version.
[00:56:27] Cool. fire while the parade passed through Liberty Square. It was put out, there were no injuries, the head was destroyed and had to be rebuilt. And maybe that's why they cut out the brave part. Because this poor... I don't know. Or actually, they're too close to flames.
[00:57:40] Right. Well, they probably So let's see. Oh, oh wait, here we go. Speaking of characters. Oh yeah. I missed one thing. So when we get back to, I wanna mention something.
[00:59:02] Oh, okay, okay.
[00:59:06] Yeah, I. Right. Interesting. Yeah. And that's it.
[01:00:20] Maybe we're going classic Disney here.
[01:00:22] I don't know.
[01:00:23] I mean, Brave is great,
[01:00:25] but you haven't heard anything about Brave
[01:00:27] for quite some time. Jimmy, if you want to keep an ear out for those things, Eric, would you mind playing the finale song again? The finale song again. Thank you. I'm still interested in exhibits A, B, and C. Thank you so much for not having me play the things that are loaded and having me play something different that I have to vamp during.
[01:01:43] We already heard it, how come it's not loaded?
[01:01:46] I deleted it. I don't want you to go out on the suit. But it's just they're just pounding you with references. Yeah, I appreciate the point. There are plenty of references to classic Disney themes at the end of Festival of Fantasy.
[01:03:02] Let me see if this volume will be okay. from the inception in within the writing process, they infused these references rather than it just being like a good kids, Bob mix, right? Eric, could you play exhibit A? There it is. Now I thought for sure that there would be maybe a mention to it walling news is a very bad idea. ABC 7, Columbia, Missouri, KABC, Columbus, Ohio, cake ABC in Wichita, Kansas, Breitbart covered it, which, you know, that kind of makes sense. So this crime against humanity was rightfully again, airkeep, exhibit eight again.
[01:07:05] So they are replacing our history with. performance is because the catchy song is tied to the 1946 film Song of the South. Amid a woke makeover at the amusement park, Disneyland visitors will no longer hear the iconic song during its popular twice a day. Magic happens. You're not exaggerating Dan. You're not exaggerating. This is all it was. Yeah. Keep players a good exhibit. Sorry.
[01:08:24] That's it. That's that's it. Okay 10th, 2022. It's zippity. Don't don't know. Festival of Fantasy Parade. Wow. Disney World. Any Walt Disney World fan is likely to likely to be able to tell you that the popular Festival of Fantasy Parade returned for the first time since
[01:09:42] 2020 to Disney's Magic Kingdom yesterday. Guests packed the about this. Is this really what's bothering you? Like these people. Yeah, what really is bothering you? They're bored. Right. They're bored. Yeah, maybe. And I honestly think that they need to feel oppression. And if they did, if they actually had like, if they spent half a day, or even a couple hours existing in the world
[01:12:07] African-American or black communities, I'm not sure 100% so I apologize. But isn't it just a past tense of the term, awake? Yeah.
[01:12:08] Awakening, being aware, being made aware, being awakened to other people's perspectives and other people's sensibilities and life concerns to your point Dan.
[01:12:19] What's wrong with it?
[01:12:21] What's wrong with being aware of other people and what makes other people upset or?
[01:12:26] Yeah, what's wrong with being nice? And you can't please everybody, but if there's something you can do to make a change to something
[01:13:42] that's been around for since the 80s,
[01:13:45] based on an IP that was around since the 40s, but this is a goddamn. Yeah, no, I get your major point. I used to be able to go around and have Blackface on. I don't understand why I can't do that anymore. It's like if you just point in, take a few minutes to understand what that means,
[01:15:01] why it's not cool, what the origins.
[01:15:04] How many high school plays did you do in Blackface? Do you want to go to Golden Corral or do you want to go to all of Garden for bottomless pasta and salad? Kind of a corporate-ish feel to both but you know That's and I'm not even saying that as a a little bit of a dig to Disney World But also it's like that's kind of what the parades are at Disney World
[01:16:22] First you want to hear your classic songs with your classic friends, or do you want to hear some
[01:17:29] Springer was interesting. I watched the show on the 90s, on Disney Plus. That was a whole thing about Jerry Springer. Anyway, look them up. The 90 me, watching a daytime parade, I really like the bright and vibrant. I already talked about sort of the inclusivity of the newer stuff. Why they don't have that at Disney World, I don't know. It's an older parade and that's probably part of it. Yeah the grand finale, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse. Here's the moment you've all been waiting for. What Magic Happens does is says, here's Mickey Mouse and we don't need to wait until the end to present our grand finale of Mickey Mouse.
[01:20:25] We're going to start with it. Well, if I'm good at nothing else, it's a simple fight. So anyway, the score is tied, but I think that the tiebreaker is the, for lack of a better term, just the, there's a better term than ballsy, but just sort of the bold choice of saying,
[01:21:41] we don't need Mickey Mouse to finish this parade.
[01:21:44] We have enough that can speak for its sail,
[01:21:46] stand up on its own with its own original music I will say that Festival of Fantasy is a more coherent parade. It's just tired. It's, yeah. I mean, there are some interesting things that happen. The kinetic energy on a couple of the floats is great. Yeah. And I gave credit for that. But yeah, you see the tangled float and you see the unfloted.
[01:23:01] And you're like, okay.
[01:23:03] All right.
[01:23:04] Yeah.
[01:23:05] I'm more engaged the whole time with, because,. Oh, that's right. I have seen magic happens. It's great. Eric, what's the better parade? Magic happens. Okay. Do you feel that way before we started? Hands down.
[01:24:21] Yeah, that made it very difficult to do this,
[01:24:23] but Festival of Fantasy is a classic parade.
[01:24:27] And it's a very Walt Disney parade. because then the tangled float is great. There's so many good moments in it. But if you're looking for like that, okay, what's their version of Magic Happens? It's like, they don't have a version of Magic Happens because they don't have a market. Yeah, that's what this show is all about. Yeah, and at the same time, and I'm trying to wrap this up quickly.
[01:25:41] So Jimmy, we can end this.
[01:25:42] But like also someone coming from the East Coast
[01:25:46] and they're like, Magic Happens, Yeah. We're fine. Anyway, well done, guys. Thank you for that. And congratulations to Magic happens. I will be seeing that. I'm planning to be there in June at the Consea event. I might be. Yeah. Just I just booked a Supreme. Paul today. Who? Oh, sorry about the full name, Mr. Paul.
[01:27:01] Jay Paul.
[01:27:02] Yeah.
[01:27:03] Yeah.
[01:27:04] There was some evidently we made fun of the fact
[01:27:06] he had a first name for a last name
[01:27:07] and he and his wife both enjoyed that. Are we doing one more? Yeah, I think well, we'll see. But I know we're going to have a send off. Yeah, who knows? Who knows? Puney Paws listened to that rewatch podcast for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Star Wars podcast. I believe there's a fair amount of Star Wars stuff happening this year. So that should be interesting. Scraping the vault, we had a new episode of dealers choice, which was Dan's choice of labyrinth,
[01:28:25] which in retrospect, I liked a lot.
[01:29:23] and be kind. No wait.
[01:29:23] Until next time,
[01:29:26] Korda's adjourned.
