[00:00:11] So this is part of our Endgame series, so we are releasing it in four parts. Part one was our analysis, part two was the first part of the movie up until Steve and Tony have to go back further in time to the 70s.
[00:00:30] That's where we're going to pick up the movie here. And then part four, which will be out this coming Thursday, is going to be us discussing our thoughts on the movie, our final thoughts, our review, that sort of stuff.

[00:00:54] Anyway, with all that being said, I'm going to pass it back over to Recording Booth Ryan and go!
[00:01:01] On your left.
[00:01:02] So Cap meets Tony and Scott at the rendezvous point. Loki's escape with the Tesseract ruined the time heist. But Tony has one last idea. Travel further back in time and retrieve the Tesseract from S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base of operations in 1970.
[00:01:19] Tony knows his father was there studying the Tesseract. They will use up the last of their Pym particles, but they also know that that Dr. Pym was at the same place at the same time.
[00:01:32] Only slight problem is Tony only has a vague idea as to the specific date. They decide to improvise and they set their coordinates to six weeks prior to Tony's birth, which is April 7th, 1970.
[00:01:48] Meanwhile, Scott takes the Scepter and Mind Stone back to 2023.
[00:01:55] The other consideration that they really weren't sure about was how well the CGI would render Hank Pym.
[00:02:05] Ha!
[00:02:07] Yeah.
[00:02:08] And the answer is, okay.
[00:02:12] Yeah.
[00:02:13] Michael Douglas is de-aging and this one was not as good as the Ant-Man.
[00:02:19] Yeah, it was not as good as Ant-Man and it was definitely not as good as Samuel L. Jackson in Captain Marvel, which was phenomenal.
[00:02:30] Yeah.
[00:02:31] Yeah, as you talked about.
[00:02:32] Yeah, they spent so much CGI budget like, dude, we're going to send it to the B firm, not the A firm that we normally send it to.
[00:02:39] It took me a minute also to figure out how does Tony know that this all is there?
[00:02:44] And then he has his dad's journal, right?
[00:02:48] In Iron Man 2, he has all of his dad's research.
[00:02:50] I suppose, yeah.
[00:02:51] I would assume that in that Walt Disney-esque research that he was doing, he happened across some note that said, I told Hank Pym to kick rocks or I don't know.
[00:03:09] You know, I do love bringing it back to the sort of thing that I'm familiar with, which is Walt Disney in his years working in a bunker in upstate New York.
[00:03:21] Yeah.
[00:03:22] Yeah.
[00:03:23] There was so much of that that happened.
[00:03:26] I still maintain that whoever came up with the 2012 plan just aired.
[00:03:32] Like, why not just go back to this point in time from the get-go and get the Pym Particles and then you don't have to sweat it, right?
[00:03:39] I have to, like, that's always been the question.
[00:03:42] Everybody's always asked, right?
[00:03:43] Why don't you just go get more Pym Particles?
[00:03:45] Then you can just go back wherever you need to go and get the stones.
[00:03:49] And I have to assume that that just is something they didn't think of.
[00:03:54] Yeah, it was like, well, we've got this much, so we can do this.
[00:03:59] And this is efficient.
[00:04:00] And we can all team up together in New York in this time.
[00:04:04] And it's reasonable for all of us to be here.
[00:04:07] And oh, crap, we screwed up.
[00:04:10] I also have to remind myself, this is a superhero time heist, you know, outer space movie.
[00:04:19] I can't look at it too closely.
[00:04:21] So, you know what?
[00:04:23] You know what?
[00:04:24] I'm just, let me just contextualize this a little bit.
[00:04:28] Because Billy Joel once wrote about his New York state of mind.
[00:04:33] And if you extrapolate said state of mind with additional voltage across the Planck scale,
[00:04:38] you very much might approach the whisper of energy that it takes to travel through time.
[00:04:46] I'm just putting that out there, okay?
[00:04:48] But what does Bowie have to say about that?
[00:04:51] Uh, goo-goo-ga-jube.
[00:04:56] Oh, wait.
[00:04:57] That's a different guy.
[00:04:59] So we, the, Tony and Steve, they're like, we're going to do this?
[00:05:04] Like, yep, we're going to do this.
[00:05:05] So they go back to New Jersey 1970.
[00:05:07] And I think this is actually like, on this last rewatch, this is my favorite scenes.
[00:05:12] Um, but this is the New Jersey 1970.
[00:05:15] Yeah.
[00:05:15] Because it really, really, you're so distracted with the big battle and the climactic, very kind of like, um, sentimental parts of that we'll get to in a bit.
[00:05:26] But this, these scenes were great.
[00:05:28] So we see a couple driving a white Old Mobile Cutlass as they drive past Camp Lehigh Army Base, which would never happen because you would never have an army base right next to the road.
[00:05:39] But we'll put that aside.
[00:05:41] Men mocks the military inside by saying, hey man, make love, not war.
[00:05:44] And that man is Stanley, who is making his final MCU cameo as quote, 70s car man.
[00:05:52] So they used Lola VFX to de-age Lee back to what he looked like in the 70s.
[00:05:58] So he has, you know, darker hair, darker, you know, fuller hair, darker mustache.
[00:06:03] They also digitally recreated his wife, Joan Bukok Lee, who is a British actress.
[00:06:10] And so Lee's final cameo in the MCU is basically him driving off into the sunset with the woman he loved, which I think, when you think about it, it's like really like a kind of a perfect ending.
[00:06:23] Yeah.
[00:06:23] The culmination of this entire series that he's been part of for so long, as much as he like appropriated his involvement in all of these different stories.
[00:06:36] Yeah.
[00:06:36] Yeah.
[00:06:37] We could put that aside, but yeah.
[00:06:38] Yeah.

[00:06:42] There's actually a specific image of Stanley that this is de-aged.
[00:06:48] He's wearing the same outfit and everything.
[00:06:50] The white jacket with the black shirt unbuttoned all the way down to his belly button.

[00:06:58] Right.
[00:07:00] And it's a great image.
[00:07:02] So I'll make sure that that gets out to socials after release, because I think everybody deserves to see that.

[00:07:09] It's pretty good.
[00:07:09] Another great image is the back of the Oldmobile Cutlass, which has a license plate that reads 420 LRO.
[00:07:19] That's right.
[00:07:20] That's right.
[00:07:21] And then a bumper sticker that says, enough said.

[00:07:27] The only thing I could come up with when I did this, I spent way too much time on what is the license plate.
[00:07:32] I mean, some people suggested that it means 420 and then LRO.
[00:07:37] Let's roll one.
[00:07:38] But 420 as an expression didn't come about until like 1971.
[00:07:41] So it really bothered me.
[00:07:42] So shout out to San Rafael High School, where it was first coined in 1971.
[00:07:48] High school kids would go meet at a statue and smoke at 420.
[00:07:53] Anyway, Tony and Steve arrive at Camp Lehigh military base, the birthplace of Captain America, which is a funny scene.
[00:08:00] Like, well, technically I wasn't born here, but just the idea of me was.
[00:08:05] Camp Lehigh is the facility where Steve trained during World War II, during the first Avenger.
[00:08:10] It's also the site for AvengerCon, which Kamala Khan attended in Ms. Marvel, or will attend in Ms. Marvel.
[00:08:16] Tony asks, where would a quasi-fascistic intelligence organization such as S.H.I.E.L.D. hide the Tesseract?
[00:08:23] To which Steve replies, Mar-a-Lago.
[00:08:26] No, sorry.
[00:08:26] In plain sight.
[00:08:27] In plain sight.
[00:08:28] Sorry about that.
[00:08:30] So we then get a cameo of the Ammunitions Bunker, which Steve identified in The Winter Soldier as being the location that was against Army regulations.
[00:08:40] If you remember, it was too close to the barracks.
[00:08:42] And so that bunker housed the series of computers, which hosted Arnhem Zola's mind before it was destroyed by Hydra.
[00:08:52] If people will remember from The Winter Soldier, how Nat and Steve narrowly avoided being bombed.
[00:09:01] And the guy who actually walks into the bunker is Christopher Marcus.
[00:09:06] Okay.
[00:09:07] Who wrote this movie.
[00:09:08] Nice.
[00:09:08] Nice.
[00:09:09] Nice.
[00:09:10] I'm not sure where Steve, by the way, I should have mentioned like Steve and Tony Stark of both appropriated costumes.
[00:09:18] Steve is wearing a military outfit.
[00:09:22] I think he's a captain, I believe.
[00:09:24] What has the bars?
[00:09:25] Yeah, and it's Roscoe is the name on it.
[00:09:27] Okay.
[00:09:28] Which also, comic book reference here, Roscoe Simmons was the name of the man who took up the Captain America mantle while Steve was out doing his nomad thing.
[00:09:41] Okay.
[00:09:41] Oh, wow.
[00:09:42] I didn't know that.
[00:09:43] Oh, one of the worst times of Captain America.
[00:09:45] Okay.
[00:09:47] So are we led to believe that they, they like knocked out two guys?
[00:09:53] I wish they would.
[00:09:54] Indiana Jones style.
[00:09:55] Yes.
[00:09:56] Stole their perfectly sized uniforms.
[00:10:01] Struggling to button the top button.
[00:10:03] Yeah.
[00:10:03] Steve is too yoked.
[00:10:06] So we get a shot of Captain Rogers and Dr. Shark on the elevator and get a fun cameo of Yvette Nicole Brown from Community who asked Steve if he's new to which he replies, not really.
[00:10:19] Tony searches through his dad's darkened lab before finding the Tesseract.
[00:10:24] He extracts it from its holding case and throws it into a spare briefcase.
[00:10:28] Just then a younger version of Howard appears and Tony is busted.
[00:10:36] But for whatever reason, like Howard doesn't seem to really care that much.
[00:10:39] I can't quite, can't quite figure it out.
[00:10:43] He, but Tony manages to play it off, introduce himself as a visitor from MIT.
[00:10:47] You know, you can see Tony's completely flustered, like seeing his dad.
[00:10:51] He was not prepared for this at all.
[00:10:53] When asked for his name, Tony just blurts out Howard.
[00:10:56] He was like, okay, Howard Potts, Howard Potts.
[00:11:02] You know, Tony forgets the Tesseract.
[00:11:06] Howard hands him the suitcase with the Tesseract before they head outside for some fresh air.
[00:11:10] A couple of things to note here.
[00:11:12] In the background, there are a row of green computer screens and you cannot see it.
[00:11:16] But VFX has revealed that there is a display of Arnim Zola there.
[00:11:23] When the other thing that kind of occurred to me is like, this does not seem like how Howard Stark would react.
[00:11:30] Like I, you know, he, I don't think he's definitely not like Hank Pym level of abrasiveness, but he also just seems pretty laid back about things.
[00:11:40] Hey, yeah, you're a random guy hanging out in the place.
[00:11:44] Yeah, hey, that's great.
[00:11:45] Let's talk about dad stuff.
[00:11:46] Yeah, hey, you got an MIT badge.
[00:11:48] I won't question it anymore.
[00:11:49] That's fine.
[00:11:51] Then Steve calls a, so puts the Tesseract, they head outside for some fresh air.
[00:12:00] Steve calls a younger version of Dr. Hank Pym, the digitally de-aged Michael Douglas with distracting hair that just really killed me.
[00:12:10] I mean, it's good 70s hair.
[00:12:13] It's, yeah, I don't know that he just doesn't strike me as a 70s hair dude, but maybe so.
[00:12:19] He is a scientist.
[00:12:20] Oh, yeah.
[00:12:21] How hippie was Pym in the day?
[00:12:24] Oh, no.
[00:12:25] That's a great question.
[00:12:25] The, they tell him, he calls and tells him there's a glowing pack.
[00:12:29] And you could also see like, you could tell that he's like, like Pym is kind of a jerk.
[00:12:33] He's like, hey, need to come get this package.
[00:12:36] He's like, isn't that your job?
[00:12:37] Like, what a jerk.
[00:12:39] He tells him that the package is glowing and that people are afraid to touch it.
[00:12:43] And then Pym sprints out of his lab.
[00:12:46] Steve dips in, steals four vials of Pym particles.
[00:12:50] And as he is leaving that nice Yvette Nicole Brown character turns out to be a narc and is leading the MPs to search for Steve and that guy with the quote, the hippie beard.
[00:13:01] So Steve ducks into an office of S.H.I.E.L.D. director Peggy Carter.
[00:13:07] There he sees a photo of himself, which she has kept on her desk for years.
[00:13:14] I recall, if I recall correctly, it's also, I think it was, might've been, it was, it was, I can't remember if it was pre or post getting his, his enhancements, if you will.
[00:13:27] But the super, the.
[00:13:29] Oh, Scrawny.
[00:13:30] Yeah.
[00:13:31] I don't, can't remember if it was Scrawny Steve or Bulk Steve, but he somehow, so he sees that he's in her, you know, coincidentally enough, he's in her office.
[00:13:39] He peers through the glass window and he sees Peggy in the next office.
[00:13:43] He's like up to the plate of glass and there's like blinds that are open and he sees her.
[00:13:49] She does not see him.
[00:13:50] I don't know how.
[00:13:52] I just, I cannot believe it.
[00:13:54] But he looks at her longingly knowing that this likely the last time he will see her and thinking about his lost love.
[00:14:02] I think this is probably the moment which changes the end of the movie for Steve, which we'll get to in a, in a bit.
[00:14:09] As.
[00:14:10] Oh, the end of the movie.
[00:14:11] We'll, we'll get there in a bit.
[00:14:12] You sure about that?
[00:14:14] I'm getting a lot.
[00:14:14] I didn't define what a bit was because I pretend like I'm in the quantum realm and like two hours feels like a bit or.
[00:14:21] Okay.

[00:14:24] So as they head out, Howard tells Tony that he's leaving her alone because he's on big date night with his wife who's pregnant.
[00:14:31] Tony tells Howard that he has a little girl.
[00:14:33] Howard says, and he's just, just look in his face.
[00:14:35] Like he just so wants to tell him that it's his granddaughter.
[00:14:38] He's just, he's having this, this really, really kind of touching poignant scene.
[00:14:44] It's a cool scene.
[00:14:45] It's great.
[00:14:46] It's great.
[00:14:47] On rewatch.
[00:14:48] I think this is, like I said, this is probably the camp Lehigh scenes were my favorite.
[00:14:52] I think this interaction with his dad really like hit home.
[00:14:55] I don't know why it never struck me as much before.
[00:14:59] But just to go back to the pricing just for a second.
[00:15:01] When Steve's in the, one of the flaws of that, that scene is, you know, he sees Peggy Carter.
[00:15:08] Or at some point in time, can you just not write a note that says Zola equals Hydra slash Nazi and just leave it somewhere?
[00:15:15] But I don't know why he couldn't do that.
[00:15:19] The, and the, you know, it's funny.
[00:15:23] And also in the scene where, where Steve stole the Pym particles.
[00:15:27] It's kind of funny because, you know, we see in Ant-Man and Ant-Man the Wasp, like Dr. Pym is really paranoid about someone stealing his work.
[00:15:37] And it turns out someone did steal his work.
[00:15:39] And so maybe that leads to why he's paranoid.
[00:15:43] So Howard asked Tony how he felt being a father the first time.
[00:15:46] Was he nervous?
[00:15:47] Did he feel qualified?
[00:15:50] And Tony just has this, this conversation.
[00:15:53] When a kid was born, were you nervous?
[00:15:57] Wildly.
[00:15:58] Oh.
[00:15:59] Yeah.
[00:15:59] Did you feel qualified?
[00:16:00] Like you had any idea how to successfully operate that thing?
[00:16:05] I literally pieced it together as I went along.
[00:16:07] I thought about what my dad did.
[00:16:10] My old man, he never met a problem he couldn't solve with a belt.
[00:16:13] I thought my dad was tough on me.
[00:16:15] And now, looking back on it, I just remember the good stuff.
[00:16:18] You know, he did drop the odd pearl.
[00:16:20] Yeah?
[00:16:20] Like what?
[00:16:22] No amount of money he ever bought a second of time.
[00:16:26] Smart guy.
[00:16:28] Did his best.
[00:16:30] I'll tell you, that kid's not even here yet.
[00:16:32] And there's nothing I wouldn't do for him.

[00:16:45] Yeah.

[00:17:14] It's on the scale of awkward hugs.
[00:17:16] It's up there with Peter trying to hug Tony in the back of the car in the Spider-Man movie.

[00:17:21] Oh, gosh.
[00:17:22] Yeah.
[00:17:24] No, I was just letting you out of the car.
[00:17:29] So, the couple things.
[00:17:33] There's an Easter egg here about him bringing sauerkraut to his wife.
[00:17:36] That was...
[00:17:37] Steve McFeely added...
[00:17:38] That's what his own mother craved while she was pregnant with him.
[00:17:42] And, you know, when he talks about...
[00:17:46] You know, you're doing your best.
[00:17:49] That was also kind of a playback to the Civil War where...
[00:17:55] A younger version of Tony tells...
[00:17:57] You know, he's told me...
[00:17:58] I know you did your best.
[00:17:59] Talk about his father.
[00:18:02] And then he hugged one last time before he joins Steve and they head back to 2023.
[00:18:06] So, things are looking pretty good.
[00:18:08] We're like...
[00:18:09] Three for three now.
[00:18:10] I think.
[00:18:11] With stones.
[00:18:11] We get to Asgard.
[00:18:15] Thor and Rocket arrive in Asgard.
[00:18:18] And they make their way past Loki's cell to find Jane.
[00:18:21] And in order to extract the ether-lickety split.
[00:18:25] I do love that Audi had more screen time than Tom Hiddleston in this movie.
[00:18:29] But we will...
[00:18:33] Well...
[00:18:33] Tom doesn't pay as much.
[00:18:35] Come on.
[00:18:37] Volkswagen loves their products.
[00:18:40] So, before Thor can make a pit stop at the wine cellar to grab a couple of to-go pints.
[00:18:44] Because, I mean, come on.
[00:18:45] You can win a couple of roadies for the trip, right?
[00:18:47] He sees his mother, Frege.
[00:18:49] And he just is overcome with emotions when he realizes this is the day that his mother would be murdered.
[00:18:56] And so, he freezes up.
[00:18:59] And Rocket comes with...
[00:19:00] Come here.
[00:19:00] Come here.
[00:19:01] And he just slaps him across the face and gives him out his grief.
[00:19:04] And Rocket, who should never be a therapist of any sort.
[00:19:09] You know, I'm thinking the prior...
[00:19:11] Pretty straightforward.
[00:19:12] Like in style.
[00:19:13] Prior Guardians movie.
[00:19:15] He was like, get over it.
[00:19:17] Like, you know, dead people die or something.
[00:19:19] I can't remember what the exact context was.
[00:19:20] But, like, it was the one where...
[00:19:22] Ryan, do you remember where, like, Groot was, like, covering his mouth?
[00:19:24] Like, oh my god.
[00:19:25] I can't believe you said that.
[00:19:27] Yeah.
[00:19:27] Oh, it was...
[00:19:28] Yeah, it was to Peter.
[00:19:30] Who was talking about his dead mom.
[00:19:35] Rocket.
[00:19:35] Yeah.

[00:19:48] I get that you miss your mom.
[00:19:49] But she's gone.
[00:19:50] Really gone.
[00:19:51] And there are plenty of people who are only kind of gone.
[00:19:53] And you can help them.
[00:19:55] So, is it too much to ask that you brush the crumbs out of your beard?
[00:19:58] Make Shmoopy talk to pretty pants.
[00:20:00] And when she's not looking, suck out the Infinity Stone.
[00:20:02] Help me get my family back.
[00:20:03] And Thor's like kind of tearing up.
[00:20:05] He goes, okay.
[00:20:06] And Rocket goes, are you crying?
[00:20:07] He goes, no.
[00:20:08] Yes.
[00:20:12] Poor Thor.
[00:20:13] Poor Thor.
[00:20:14] Rocket thinks he's got Thor back on board.
[00:20:16] But turned around and see that he's gone.
[00:20:17] As Fricka turns a corner, that's when she runs into Thor.
[00:20:19] And she instantly realizes that this is Thor from the future.
[00:20:24] So, she's been in the movie for like 40 seconds.
[00:20:27] And she's already figured it out.
[00:20:29] So, they share a touching embrace and they agree to talk.
[00:20:32] While Thor is having a reunion with his mom, we see Rocket sneak up behind an archival footage of Jane Foster.
[00:20:41] In this very, when you start talking about the odd CGI run.
[00:20:45] This is one that definitely jumped out to me.
[00:20:46] In order to extract the Aether Reality Stone.
[00:20:49] The next thing you see is him running through the castle.
[00:20:52] As he's being chased by guards.
[00:20:54] And they're screaming, stop that rabbit.
[00:20:57] Thor tells Fricka how he failed to defeat Thanos.
[00:21:01] She tells him that he makes him.
[00:21:02] That makes him like everyone else.
[00:21:04] And she tells him that everyone fails at who they're supposed to be.
[00:21:07] And that the measure of a person, of a hero.
[00:21:11] Is how well they succeed of being who they are.
[00:21:13] So, even though he failed to stop Thanos.
[00:21:16] The measure of him as a hero is ability to make things right.
[00:21:19] So, Thor wants to tell her about the future.
[00:21:22] But she tells him that there is.
[00:21:23] That he is there to repair his future.
[00:21:27] Not hers.
[00:21:28] And it kind of struck me when watching this scene.
[00:21:31] She realizes when talking to him that she's not around in 2023.
[00:21:35] So, she knows that she will be dying within the next several years.
[00:21:39] Certainly not that day.
[00:21:40] So, just then, Rocket arrives.
[00:21:46] You must be mom.
[00:21:47] I got the thing.
[00:21:47] Come on, we got to go.
[00:21:49] And Fricka was like, you know, Thor was like, I wish I had more time.
[00:21:53] Fricka says, no, this was a gift.
[00:21:55] Now you go be the man you're meant to be.
[00:21:57] Thor says, I love you, mom.
[00:21:59] And Fricka says, I love you.
[00:22:00] And eat a salad.
[00:22:02] And so, just as they're about to leave, Thor holds up his arm, holds up his hand, and summons Mjolnir.
[00:22:14] Proving that he is still worthy.

[00:32:41] Her neural implants are networked with 2014 Nebula.
[00:32:45] 2014 Nebula is relaying the memories from 2023 Nebula, which allows Thanos to see the future.
[00:32:52] He realizes that he discovered all the infinity stones in the future and that the Avengers are going back in time to undo that.
[00:33:01] When you think about the one in 14 million chances, you think of all the different decisions.
[00:33:07] Like, you know, instead of Nebula and Rhodey going, it's Nebula and Cap.
[00:33:12] And that fails something else because Cap won't be able to go back.

[00:33:18] Or Tony goes here but won't know to go back to 1970.
[00:33:22] And one of the things that just occurred to me is like, you know, what if she were holding under the power stone and they snap, you know, they go backwards.

[00:35:46] The Avengers will have all the stones gathered in one place, making his plans to achieve balance in the universe that much easier.

[00:35:58] One thing that struck me was we see at the end of Guardians 2.
