[00:00:00] Puny Podians, what's up y'all? Hey, this is EditingBayRyan taking up my usual space here at the beginning of the episode. Wanted to jump on, explain real quick what was going on. So, of course, we're at Avengers Endgame. We always knew this was going to be probably one of the things we were going to talk the absolute most about and we were right.
[00:00:23] So, rather than inundating you with a whole bunch of content all today and just clogging up your podcast listening for the next week straight, instead what we're going to do is we're going to release one episode today. This episode's going to be all of our kind of preamble sort of stuff. So, all the production details and what we were thinking going into the movie.
[00:00:48] Then we will release an episode this coming Thursday. We will release that one. That will be the first half of our breakdown of the movie. The second half of our breakdown of the movie will come out next Tuesday.
[00:01:01] And then next Thursday, we will release our final thoughts. So, bear with us. Enjoy this. We loved Endgame. It's a great movie. Obviously, it deserves all this time. So, enjoy all the great content and past Ryan, take it away.
[00:01:21] On your left.
[00:01:23] Welcome to Puny Pod, the podcast who loves all of our listeners. 3,000.
[00:01:53] Welcome to Puny Pod, everyone. The Marvel Fandom Podcast where we re-watch the MCU in release order.
[00:01:58] And we cover Marvel news over on our monthly Bugle episodes.
[00:02:02] My name is Ryan and my co-host who hates the stairs is David.
[00:02:10] David, we're off the rails early today.
[00:02:13] I do like myself an escalator. Thank you.
[00:02:16] You're welcome.
[00:02:17] And the giggles you can hear in the background are a guest who, as far as I'm concerned, has America's ass.
[00:02:25] Eric!
[00:02:28] Yeah, thank you.
[00:02:30] I have not known for giggling on podcasts.
[00:02:35] No.
[00:02:37] Not at all.
[00:02:38] No giggles. Straight faces.
[00:02:40] Never.
[00:02:41] This is going to be a straight...
[00:02:42] Serious podcast.
[00:02:43] Please.
[00:02:44] Can we get back to the facts?
[00:02:46] We got such bad reviews after our Dan episode that...
[00:02:53] That I loved.
[00:02:54] Those multiple episodes that I loved.
[00:02:57] More than anything I've listened to in weeks.
[00:03:02] Well, we are at the sort of end of the Infinity Saga.
[00:03:09] We have one more movie after this in the Infinity Saga, but I would say this is the climax where Spider-Man becomes the falling action.
[00:03:18] We are at the climax of the Infinity Saga.
[00:03:21] We are at Endgame.
[00:03:24] We are in the Endgame now.
[00:03:27] Officially, I have been invited to this podcast, whether they intended to or not.
[00:03:35] Any movie title that has Avengers in it, it's like, oh man, Eric has shown up on the Zoom.
[00:03:40] Yeah, except for the one that you forgot to invite me to.
[00:03:44] That was the point!
[00:03:46] It means, Eric, we don't...
[00:03:47] What do I pay you for?
[00:03:49] It also means that we don't, like, get to hear your voice on our show for another, like, several years.
[00:03:56] Forever.
[00:03:57] Because there's no more Avengers, ever.
[00:03:59] Yeah, ever.
[00:04:00] You know, other than the ones where they're, you know, basically doing Infinity War and Endgame again.
[00:04:06] Or Eric just says, hey, if this person were an Avenger at any point in time, I'm just gonna bop in.
[00:04:11] You know what?
[00:04:13] Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness, please.
[00:04:16] Please.
[00:04:17] Please.
[00:04:18] Maybe we need to get you in on the Marvels so that you can defend your Captain Marvel.
[00:04:26] I do love the Marvels.
[00:04:30] Yeah.
[00:04:31] Absolutely.
[00:04:32] Yeah.
[00:04:32] No complaints.
[00:04:34] You can complain.
[00:04:36] I will argue against you.
[00:04:38] Yeah.
[00:04:41] Well, Eric, before we get into a four-hour episode where people start to tune out...
[00:04:47] Oh, four hours?
[00:04:48] Oh, I have, like, work to do?
[00:04:52] Is there anything you want to plug early before people start tuning out?
[00:04:56] Oh, okay.
[00:04:58] BowieSplaining.
[00:04:59] We still put out episodes.
[00:05:02] We just put out low yesterday.
[00:05:05] I don't know when this is releasing.
[00:05:07] But, yeah, BowieSplaining.
[00:05:09] If you'd like to learn more about David Bowie, I'm learning about David Bowie.
[00:05:14] And our friend Dan, who is on the Captain Marvel episode, he's teaching me about David Bowie.
[00:05:23] And there you go.
[00:05:24] I'm also on a bunch of other Disney podcasts.
[00:05:27] And if you listen to a Disney podcast, I'm probably on it.
[00:05:30] And if you don't like it, I'm probably not the one that's on it.
[00:05:37] Especially Theme Park the...
[00:05:40] Or, yeah.
[00:05:42] Theme Park the Disney?
[00:05:45] Yes.
[00:05:45] Yeah.
[00:05:45] Podcast the Ride.
[00:05:46] You know what?
[00:05:47] No shade.
[00:05:49] That's...
[00:05:50] Okay.
[00:05:51] Let's just get it out there.
[00:05:52] Podcast the Ride, one of my favorite podcasts.
[00:05:55] Podcasts.
[00:05:56] I love the people on it.
[00:05:57] But I have a feeling that the fans keep looking at other podcasts out there, including our own.
[00:06:06] It's weird.
[00:06:07] Yeah.
[00:06:08] I don't know.
[00:06:08] I don't get it.
[00:06:10] It's one of those things where it's kind of weird because, like, I wonder how much of it is the fandom just has a collective hive mind.
[00:06:17] Yeah.
[00:06:17] All just kind of arrives at the same place at the same time.
[00:06:20] When I've done that...
[00:06:22] Yeah.
[00:06:23] It's been a thing that's happened so many other times with other podcasts where we've covered the same topics within a short period of time.
[00:06:32] But Podcast the Ride lately, it seems like the fans are looking at our show and going, they did a show about Toad.
[00:06:40] Do you guys want to do a show about Toad?
[00:06:44] Eric is also here.
[00:06:45] I was going to say...
[00:06:46] I'm sorry, Eric.
[00:06:46] Go ahead.
[00:06:47] Finish.
[00:06:47] Oh, no.
[00:06:48] No, no.
[00:06:48] Go for it.
[00:06:49] I was going to say Eric is also here as our resident scientician to explain some of the facts of this movie.
[00:06:58] I know more about time travel than the average podcaster.
[00:07:04] And I'm prepared to talk about time travel with no expertise.
[00:07:11] Nice.
[00:07:12] Yeah.
[00:07:12] You went back in time to get that expertise though, right?
[00:07:15] Yeah.
[00:07:15] Well, yeah.
[00:07:16] I mean, I went back there and younger me knew less about time travel than currently does.
[00:07:22] Dang.
[00:07:23] But you know what?
[00:07:24] I'll cobble it together.
[00:07:27] Just whenever you want to kick to me, I will talk about time travel and I will tell you how the time heist is...
[00:07:34] Spoiler alert on the time heist for this movie.
[00:07:39] I will tell you how that is completely cromulent and there we go.
[00:07:46] Ooh, that's a good word.
[00:07:47] Cromulent.
[00:07:48] Cromulent.
[00:07:49] Yes.
[00:07:49] Yes.
[00:07:51] Well, David, why don't you give us some actual other words that...
[00:07:56] I say that like it's a fake word.
[00:07:57] I'm sorry.
[00:07:58] Why did you admit it in this show if you're not going to listen to my words?
[00:08:05] David, why don't you jump in and give us the production details for this one?
[00:08:11] I know it should be pretty short because we kind of covered it all in Infinity War, but...
[00:08:16] Pretty much.
[00:08:17] I'm going to list every cast member.
[00:08:19] This is going to take about 30 minutes.
[00:08:21] No, this is Avengers Endgame, April 27, 2018.
[00:08:27] Moved up a couple weeks.
[00:08:30] It's the US debut to avoid spoilers because it was being released in other countries prior.
[00:08:35] It is technically the fourth film in the Avengers series.
[00:08:40] Phase three, 10th installment, movie number 22.
[00:08:45] We finally got here.
[00:08:46] Three hours, two minutes.
[00:08:48] It was shot back to back with Avengers Infinity War, knowing that it will be impossible to get these people together at the same time in the future.
[00:08:58] 200 days.
[00:09:00] Infinity War made 300...
[00:09:02] Protection budget was 321.
[00:09:04] This was 400 million.
[00:09:05] Opening weekend for this movie, 357 million domestic.
[00:09:09] Holy cow.
[00:09:11] 357 million total of which 858 million was domestic gross.
[00:09:17] Worldwide gross, 2.748 billion dollars with a B.
[00:09:26] It took 11 days to reach 2 billion dollars at the box office.
[00:09:29] It was number one in 2019.
[00:09:31] It is the number one MCU movie of all time.
[00:09:33] It was the number one movie of all time in terms of gross.
[00:09:38] And it's rated X, right?
[00:09:41] It is rated X.
[00:09:42] The first rated X Disney movie.
[00:09:45] Avatar, I guess James Cameron was like, screw this.
[00:09:47] I'm going to re-release Avatar so I can nudge your head.
[00:09:49] So lame.
[00:09:50] Anyway, it is the...
[00:09:52] It is the highest...
[00:09:53] A couple other facts.
[00:09:55] It is the highest ranking non-Chinese film in China.
[00:10:00] Made 588 million.
[00:10:02] The highest grossing foreign movie in India.
[00:10:04] And was translated in five languages there.
[00:10:07] Just a worldwide phenomenon.
[00:10:11] Critics, 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
[00:10:14] Audience, 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
[00:10:16] Number two critic score behind Black Panther.
[00:10:20] Not everyone loved it.
[00:10:22] Into the Clouds wrote...
[00:10:23] Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
[00:10:25] 90%.
[00:10:26] Not everybody loved it.
[00:10:28] Not everyone loved it.
[00:10:29] Into the Clouds wrote...
[00:10:31] Another ruined once great franchise.
[00:10:33] More and more leftist political indoctrination from Beijing.
[00:10:36] Controlled Disney.
[00:10:38] Until it gets so bad that you can't concentrate on the story or follow the plot anymore.
[00:10:41] I want to be entertained.
[00:10:42] Not lectured to.
[00:10:44] Dang it, Beijing.
[00:10:45] Yeah.
[00:10:46] I can think of literally one scene.
[00:10:49] No, two.
[00:10:50] Two, sorry.
[00:10:50] Two scenes.
[00:10:51] Because you probably didn't like that there were whales in the Hudson.
[00:10:54] Okay.
[00:10:56] And the commentary on, you know, environmentalism.
[00:11:01] And then the great loss scene.
[00:11:05] I mean, one of the Russos dated a guy.
[00:11:10] Oh, that's true.
[00:11:11] There was the, I went on a date with a guy.
[00:11:14] I mean, wow.
[00:11:17] Wow.
[00:11:18] So revolutionary.
[00:11:19] So brave and stunning.
[00:11:20] Don't lecture me, Beijing-controlled Disney.
[00:11:23] But that was not the only one.
[00:11:25] There was another person who's not happy.
[00:11:27] Lou Frigno did not like it.
[00:11:29] Oh, that guy.
[00:11:30] He didn't like how Smart Hulk...
[00:11:33] He didn't like Smart Hulk at all.
[00:11:35] He likes...
[00:11:36] He thinks Hulk's supposed to be scary and hideous.
[00:11:39] And everyone wasn't aware of the comic that this actually happens.
[00:11:43] And then he said, quote,
[00:11:45] We need good stories, good elements, good messages about life.
[00:11:49] Because when you see the series, even like the Twilight Zone...
[00:11:52] Timely reference.
[00:11:53] The original Twilight Zone, he makes clear.
[00:11:54] You learn something from every episode.
[00:11:56] The CG, I mean, it's all different.
[00:11:58] People like it that way because it's bigger entertainment on screen.
[00:12:01] So...
[00:12:01] I think someone's just upset that they're not voicing the Hulk anymore.
[00:12:05] Yeah.
[00:12:06] Or appearing as like a security guard on, you know, on Morag or whatever.
[00:12:10] So...
[00:12:12] Directed again, Anthony and Joe Russo.
[00:12:15] They did Civil War.
[00:12:16] They did Winter Soldier.
[00:12:17] They did Infinity War.
[00:12:19] Rest Development Community.
[00:12:21] When asked how it felt that Endgame is the top grossing film of all time,
[00:12:26] they felt...
[00:12:27] They said, quote,
[00:12:27] It's surreal.
[00:12:29] It's very hard to process.
[00:12:30] Somebody wrote recently that for the first time in 45 years,
[00:12:34] the highest grossing movie ever was not directed by Spielberg, Cameron, or Lucas.
[00:12:38] Those are all our heroes.
[00:12:40] Those are all people who grew up watching...
[00:12:42] We grew up there watching the movies and studying their films to learn how to become filmmakers.
[00:12:45] So it's weird.
[00:12:46] It's hard to process.
[00:12:48] Screenplay.
[00:12:49] Christopher Marcus, Stephen McFeely.
[00:12:51] Same as before.
[00:12:53] Casts.
[00:12:54] There are 165 actors credited in this film.
[00:12:57] That's both 143.
[00:12:59] I usually take the cast.
[00:13:02] I put them in order.
[00:13:03] I put like how much time they're on screen.
[00:13:05] I put them in like casting.
[00:13:07] The end credits order.
[00:13:08] I'm like, screw it.
[00:13:09] I don't have time for this.
[00:13:10] It's all cameos for like payroll purposes, but...
[00:13:16] A lot of that.
[00:13:17] Yeah.
[00:13:17] This was the last...
[00:13:18] This is the last contract movie for Robert D and Gina Chris Evans.
[00:13:22] Let's pin that for about three hours from now.
[00:13:25] Jeremy Brenner returns, as does his family.
[00:13:27] There's a lot of Russo family appearances in the movie.
[00:13:32] Director Joe Russo appears in the movie, as we mentioned before.
[00:13:35] This is Chadwick Boseman's final live action appearance as Black Panther as he died from colon cancer in 2020.
[00:13:41] So, he did finish recording his voiceover for the first season of the animated show, What If? Before his death.
[00:13:47] So, cast includes 10 Oscar winners.
[00:13:53] Robert D and Gina Brie Larson, Tilda Swinton, Natalie Portman, sort of.
[00:13:58] Marissa Tomei, Taika Waititi, Michael Douglas, William Hurt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert Redford.
[00:14:04] Eight other nominees.
[00:14:05] But more importantly, four cast members who were people's sexiest man alive were in this movie.
[00:14:11] Bradley Cooper, 2011.
[00:14:13] Chris Hemsworth, 2014.
[00:14:15] Mr. Paul Rudd, 2021.
[00:14:17] And Chris Evans, 2022.
[00:14:20] So, those are your details behind the scenes.
[00:14:23] Please, Senator Paul Rudd.
[00:14:30] That's fantastic.
[00:14:32] I'm making that up.
[00:14:33] I'm sorry.
[00:14:33] Do you think anything...
[00:14:34] I'm not from the future.
[00:14:36] Okay.
[00:14:39] Do you think anything ever tops this movie for highest grossing of all time?
[00:14:48] Sure.
[00:14:48] In the future, something will happen, right?
[00:14:51] Wizard of Oz 2?
[00:14:53] I don't know.
[00:14:54] The cinema landscape has changed so much, right?
[00:14:57] People don't go to the movies like they did.
[00:15:01] And movies just don't gross what they did.
[00:15:04] I can imagine a hundred years from now when tickets are like $300 and you can see it, right?
[00:15:08] But yeah, to your point, I don't know of another movie phenomenon that will quite top this one.
[00:15:16] Because this is, in my mind, Marvel's past Star Wars, it's...
[00:15:20] You know, when you look at that real drive for, as you say, Ryan, I don't see people going out to see...
[00:15:28] I don't know.
[00:15:29] It's hard to imagine that anything would top this.
[00:15:32] Yeah.
[00:15:32] It's interesting.
[00:15:34] Yeah.
[00:15:35] That's...
[00:15:35] You didn't ask me, but that's fine.
[00:15:38] I'm the guest and I get to express my opinion here as well.
[00:15:42] It's so weird to think about a world where everyone...
[00:15:51] Everyone I know that was not a comic book nerd suddenly became a comic book nerd.
[00:15:59] Yes.
[00:16:00] And they wanted to know more.
[00:16:03] They wanted to understand what led into this.
[00:16:07] And like...
[00:16:09] This comic book was from 20 years ago.
[00:16:13] Yeah.
[00:16:13] Yeah.
[00:16:14] Yeah, that's...
[00:16:15] Here, let me lend you one.
[00:16:16] Yeah.
[00:16:18] Yeah, I think about like...
[00:16:20] I had this moment...
[00:16:22] This was a year...
[00:16:24] This was probably 2020, I want to say.
[00:16:27] I had this moment like walking through Star Wars in...
[00:16:33] Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland where I was like...
[00:16:38] These things that like...
[00:16:41] I was given swirlies for.
[00:16:43] Not actually, but here we are.
[00:16:45] Oh, not an actual swirlie?
[00:16:47] Oh.
[00:16:48] Did not.
[00:16:48] I was sick from that.
[00:16:50] But...
[00:16:50] You know, they're now mainstream.
[00:16:52] And they're now like...
[00:16:55] Like you see Lionel Messi doing the Avengers as his celebrations for goals.
[00:17:02] Like literally highest paid athlete.
[00:17:04] The biggest jock in the world is doing Marvel stuff as his thing.
[00:17:11] And so that's...
[00:17:15] It's so...
[00:17:17] It's so interesting.
[00:17:19] And we'll get into it probably a little bit when we talk about what it was like to go see this movie for the first time and that sort of thing.
[00:17:25] But I think like...
[00:17:28] That's what really stands out to me just culturally about these movies is just that...
[00:17:36] Oh.
[00:17:37] I guess we're cool now.
[00:17:39] But not really.
[00:17:40] It's...
[00:17:41] Yeah.
[00:17:41] For a brief moment in time, we had the currency that people were looking for.
[00:17:49] Yeah.
[00:17:51] It was...
[00:17:52] Wait.
[00:17:52] What else do I need to know?
[00:17:53] Well, let me tell you...
[00:17:54] No, no, no, no, no, no.
[00:17:56] That's too much.
[00:17:59] But yeah.
[00:18:00] Like it's...
[00:18:03] For that brief moment, everybody was involved in this thing that we invested so much money and time in.
[00:18:13] And that's what it led to.
[00:18:14] I remember like vibrating with like joy knowing that there was a Thor movie coming.
[00:18:22] Oh, yeah.
[00:18:23] Like, oh, oh no.
[00:18:25] Iron Man, okay.
[00:18:26] Fine.
[00:18:27] Whatever.
[00:18:27] Thor?
[00:18:28] Yes.
[00:18:28] Sorry, Ryan.
[00:18:31] But it all led up to this.
[00:18:34] And then everybody in the world was involved.
[00:18:39] And when it finished, I can understand the mentality of, well, we finished all the comics, right?
[00:18:48] Yeah.
[00:18:49] That was done, right?
[00:18:50] Yeah.
[00:18:50] We finished the story.
[00:18:52] That was the Marvel Comics story.
[00:18:54] Where's Batman?
[00:18:56] Right.
[00:18:57] I do...
[00:18:58] I was going to say, I do wonder though, like how much...
[00:19:03] Like what percentage of viewership are people that were just not comic book fans, but watched it just to watch because everyone else...
[00:19:12] Like kind of like the Super Bowl.
[00:19:13] There are people that watch Super Bowl that don't care about football at all.
[00:19:15] They don't want to be left out.
[00:19:17] So...
[00:19:18] Exactly.
[00:19:18] Yeah.
[00:19:19] It's the Super Bowl.
[00:19:20] You have to watch it.
[00:19:22] It's Avengers Endgame.
[00:19:24] Do you realize that they killed all the good guys in the last movie?
[00:19:28] Watch that movie and then go watch the next movie.
[00:19:31] I don't know that they're coming back.
[00:19:33] I also want to know what percentage of people watched this movie and didn't see the last one.
[00:19:40] And were just like, what in the actual hell is going on here?
[00:19:44] They cut that guy's head off.
[00:19:48] Who's that guy?
[00:19:49] Why did they cut the purple guy's head off?
[00:19:51] He seemed okay.
[00:19:52] He was a farmer.
[00:19:53] He's a farmer.
[00:19:56] He's just there.
[00:19:57] He's cooking his own dinner.
[00:19:58] He is, you know, farm to table.
[00:20:00] He is off the grid.
[00:20:02] What's to hate about him?
[00:20:03] He just picked up a prickly pear.
[00:20:07] It's an anti-agricultural agenda by the...
[00:20:12] It's an anti-rural, anti-agricultural agenda by the Russos being pushed by pro-urbanists.
[00:20:20] Dang it.
[00:20:21] And the Russos are very pro-violence from their episodes of Community where there are so many paintball guns going off.
[00:20:31] My goodness.
[00:20:33] Now we're moving into superheroes.
[00:20:36] Oh, superheroes should be shot and beheaded.
[00:20:40] No, thank you.
[00:20:41] What was your first viewing?
[00:20:43] I'm sure you guys remember the very first time you saw this movie.
[00:20:46] Oh, yeah.
[00:20:48] Yeah, I was a hard midnighter.
[00:20:51] I mean, like, first showing, right?
[00:20:53] I think it was...
[00:20:54] By this time, the MCU had influenced the movie industry in such a way that, like, your first showing was no longer at midnight.
[00:21:05] And actually, one thing I remember...
[00:21:07] It was at 2 p.m.
[00:21:08] The previous Tuesday.
[00:21:10] Yeah.
[00:21:10] Yeah, I was going to say, it's like a middle of the day on a Wednesday.
[00:21:14] Like, no longer.
[00:21:15] And that was one of the interesting things with this one is I remember that this movie had a premiere showing.
[00:21:21] And I don't remember if I went to it or not.
[00:21:25] I think I went a little later.
[00:21:27] But they had a premiere showing that was, like...
[00:21:31] Every...
[00:21:31] It was, like, time and date across at least all the U.S. time zones.
[00:21:36] So, it was, like, at midnight on the East Coast, 11, you know, in Central.
[00:21:43] In Mountain, it was 10.
[00:21:44] And then on the West Coast, it would have been 9 p.m.
[00:21:48] And so, that showing was at the same exact time all the way across the country.
[00:21:53] There was a very big focus on, like, no spoilers, right?
[00:21:57] That was a big part of the culture around this was, like, hey...
[00:22:01] Oh, yeah.
[00:22:01] ...can be no spoilers.
[00:22:04] Because not everybody can go to a movie at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday.
[00:22:09] Exactly.
[00:22:10] Exactly.
[00:22:11] So, yeah, I know I saw it on that, like, Thursday night.
[00:22:15] And I remember I saw it at the...
[00:22:22] It was not with the comic book group.
[00:22:23] The comic book group no longer had their deal with the movie theater.
[00:22:28] That was hard for me to hear on the previous episode.
[00:22:32] Yeah.
[00:22:32] Yeah.
[00:22:33] Yep, it was sad.
[00:22:34] I actually found the button from...
[00:22:38] I think I found the Captain Marvel button.
[00:22:40] So, I think I was wrong.
[00:22:41] Past show correction.
[00:22:42] I think I did see that one with the Wyoming comic book group.
[00:22:48] Oh, okay.
[00:22:49] Because I think that one had the Olympus Games and Comics logo on it.
[00:22:55] Do I have to second guess everything you tell me now?
[00:22:58] No.
[00:22:58] Okay.
[00:22:58] No, this one I know for sure.
[00:23:00] I remember.
[00:23:01] I saw it at the South.
[00:23:03] So, there's two movie theaters in Fort Collins.
[00:23:06] Well, three plus a discount one.
[00:23:09] Are there seven movie theaters in Fort Collins?
[00:23:12] Come on.
[00:23:13] Stop gaspitting us.
[00:23:15] So, I saw it at the South Cinemark, which is the big Cineplex style one.
[00:23:22] And they didn't have assigned seating at that one.
[00:23:24] So, we had to go.
[00:23:27] We had to sit in line.
[00:23:29] Still kind of that culture around movies where you show up a few hours early.
[00:23:34] You sit in line so you can get the best seats in the theater.
[00:23:38] Which was really fun.
[00:23:39] And, like, that's really cool.
[00:23:41] Great community around that.
[00:23:43] Where you're kind of chatting with people and really excited.
[00:23:47] I don't think I wore the full Iron Ram costume.
[00:23:50] But I am certain I wore the helmet.
[00:23:53] Nice.
[00:23:55] I was with my now wife at the time.
[00:23:58] So, we went to see this one together.
[00:24:03] And I was so excited for this one.
[00:24:07] I, like, it was the culmination, right?
[00:24:12] It's something that I had poured 10 plus years of my life into.
[00:24:16] And so, really excited for this one, for sure.
[00:24:23] David or Eric, do you guys have any remembrances of going into the first one?
[00:24:28] First time I'm seeing this?
[00:24:30] I just watched on Disney Plus for the first time.
[00:24:32] So, I don't know what you're talking about.
[00:24:34] Oh, okay.
[00:24:34] Well, then I'll take over.
[00:24:36] No, I think everyone else.
[00:24:37] Like, you're just...
[00:24:38] It was, I think, the two movies most...
[00:24:43] Two Marvel movies most looking forward to.
[00:24:45] And the initial viewing was Black Panther and then this movie.
[00:24:51] I remember going, preserving a seat, not consuming any liquids beforehand because I didn't want to have to use the bathroom during the three and a half hours including movie trailers.
[00:25:05] And then...
[00:25:05] Pinned them out for me.
[00:25:09] Oh, okay.
[00:25:10] And then going out to Korean barbecue.
[00:25:14] We went, like, first thing in the morning and then went to lunch with my son afterwards.
[00:25:17] And so, this is it.
[00:25:19] I mean, it was the...
[00:25:20] I've used it before.
[00:25:21] This is the magic trick.
[00:25:23] You know that people are going to come back, but how do they pull it off?
[00:25:26] What happens?
[00:25:26] And what does it look like at the end?
[00:25:29] It was just...
[00:25:31] It's hard to describe, like, how enthusiastic and eager and just amped to see this movie.
[00:25:41] Yeah, it's pretty much the same for me.
[00:25:44] I went to Alamo Drafthouse where I've seen so many movies over the last...
[00:25:50] I don't think I've seen the movie in a non-Alamo Drafthouse for a long time at this point.
[00:25:57] But coming from the last movie where I remember my wife crying because Infinity War and it's so dark.
[00:26:12] And there was the woman who was sitting a few seats down who's also crying.
[00:26:16] Who had seen it...
[00:26:17] This was her second viewing.
[00:26:19] And she's like, it doesn't get any better.
[00:26:22] We're like...
[00:26:23] No, it's fine.
[00:26:24] It's fine.
[00:26:26] All of the heroes come back.
[00:26:29] They're all in the Soul Stone, don't worry.
[00:26:32] They're all in the Soul Stone.
[00:26:34] None of them happen to be on an airplane.
[00:26:37] But yeah, gosh.
[00:26:39] It was such a great day.
[00:26:43] And ultimately, I think Infinity War was a bigger thing because as a comic book fan,
[00:26:51] looking around the room and seeing the grief from people around the room was more palpable.
[00:27:01] Yeah.
[00:27:02] Seeing the movie with...
[00:27:05] Seeing Endgame with other people, it was similar.
[00:27:10] I guess the moment that kind of brought it all together...
[00:27:19] Spoiler alert.
[00:27:21] Captain America picks up Mjolnir.
[00:27:24] And hearing the entire theater erupt.
[00:27:31] Yeah.
[00:27:35] Like, there's so much catharsis at the end of this movie.
[00:27:40] And for the people who have been with it for decades saying,
[00:27:45] I am a nerd.
[00:27:47] And coming back to, oh, this is mainstream.
[00:27:52] That's amazing.
[00:27:53] And then coming...
[00:27:55] People who are just reacting to the movie as it was designed.
[00:27:58] This movie is designed for catharsis.
[00:28:04] Yeah.
[00:28:04] It was made for, oh no, what are they going to do?
[00:28:09] Oh no, Tony can't die in the cold dark of space at the very beginning of the movie?
[00:28:15] That's awful.
[00:28:17] And then to see it come back around where he's the one who saves the day.
[00:28:22] Like, it's...
[00:28:25] Everybody knew what they were doing with this.
[00:28:27] And watching it on that opening day, the entire theater,
[00:28:33] regardless of what their journey was to get to this point,
[00:28:37] we were all there together.
[00:28:40] Yeah.
[00:28:40] We were all experiencing this together.
[00:28:43] It was...
[00:28:45] Oh my goodness.
[00:28:46] It was an event.
[00:28:48] And it's an event that I don't think...
[00:28:51] I don't think we'll ever experience again.
[00:28:54] I can't ever...
[00:28:56] It'd be very challenging.
[00:28:57] I mean...
[00:28:57] Holy cow.
[00:28:59] I can't think of a...
[00:29:01] Of a...
[00:29:02] I can't think of a property that's sitting at, you know,
[00:29:07] 50, 60, 70 years of storytelling
[00:29:11] that hasn't been plucked
[00:29:13] and at least a run at it being a movie
[00:29:18] or media franchise has not happened.
[00:29:21] Because that's...
[00:29:21] Yeah.
[00:29:22] That's ultimately what this is, right?
[00:29:24] You have...
[00:29:25] We just celebrated 85 years of Marvel
[00:29:29] just a couple months ago.
[00:29:30] So you're looking at like 80 years at the time of this movie
[00:29:34] of storytelling
[00:29:35] and then pile on top of that
[00:29:39] about a decade worth of movies
[00:29:44] that brought more people into the fold.
[00:29:47] And so that momentum,
[00:29:49] that...
[00:29:51] That...
[00:29:52] That loggerhead that got built, right?
[00:29:54] Right.
[00:29:55] That just...
[00:29:57] Awesome...
[00:29:58] Steam that got built
[00:29:59] that this...
[00:30:00] This was a...
[00:30:01] This was triumphant, right?
[00:30:03] Yeah.
[00:30:03] Triumphant is probably the best word for it.
[00:30:05] This next phase,
[00:30:06] I think people will latch on to Fantastic Four,
[00:30:11] especially with it being probably a period movie in the 60s.
[00:30:16] Awesome.
[00:30:17] I am in,
[00:30:18] but I'm in for every freaking Marvel thing.
[00:30:22] I don't...
[00:30:23] I don't care.
[00:30:24] I'm a nerd.
[00:30:25] I want to see the stories from my childhood
[00:30:28] like put on the big screen.
[00:30:31] And I think some people...
[00:30:33] Like this might bring people back.
[00:30:37] Like Fantastic Four in particular,
[00:30:39] I think will bring people back.
[00:30:42] But we're not going to get to the same place.
[00:30:45] It wasn't the same thing as,
[00:30:48] oh, almost every one of these movies
[00:30:50] leads to something incredible.
[00:30:54] Yeah.
[00:30:55] And at the end of the last movie,
[00:30:57] they all died.
[00:31:00] We don't know what's going to happen next.
[00:31:02] And all of us nerds are like,
[00:31:04] we kind of know what happens next.
[00:31:06] But they didn't do what happens next.
[00:31:09] Right.
[00:31:09] This is not the comics.
[00:31:11] Right.
[00:31:11] This did not happen in the same way.
[00:31:14] The comics were almost kind of flippant
[00:31:17] with the way that they put it out there.
[00:31:19] And in the film,
[00:31:23] we made this something that is so important feeling
[00:31:29] that it transmitted into the next few movies
[00:31:34] that we saw in the saga.
[00:31:39] And holy cow.
[00:31:41] Like, I don't remember this feeling
[00:31:43] from the comics in the 90s.
[00:31:45] I don't remember...
[00:31:46] I remember reading this.
[00:31:49] I remember reading it years later.
[00:31:52] I don't remember this feeling as impactful
[00:31:54] as these movies felt.
[00:31:57] I can't imagine
[00:32:00] not seeing this movie in a theater with other people.
[00:32:02] Oh, gosh.
[00:32:03] Oh, yeah.
[00:32:04] Right.
[00:32:05] I can't imagine my first watch at home.
[00:32:07] I will still occasionally go back
[00:32:10] and look at, like,
[00:32:11] in-game reaction videos online
[00:32:14] of people losing their minds
[00:32:16] towards the end of the movie.
[00:32:18] Yeah.
[00:32:19] Just insane.
[00:32:20] Cat picking up that hammer was insane.
[00:32:24] Yeah.
[00:32:24] And then a few minutes later
[00:32:26] when everybody else showed up...
[00:32:30] And I guess we'll get there
[00:32:32] because it's only...
[00:32:34] We're only an hour into this show.
[00:32:37] But we'll get there.
[00:32:39] But when everybody else shows up
[00:32:41] and Wong looks at Doctor Strange and says,
[00:32:44] You wanted more?
[00:32:47] Like, everybody is there.
[00:32:49] They brought an army.
[00:32:52] Yeah.
[00:32:52] This is...
[00:32:53] This is an epic.
[00:32:56] This is an epic that you don't see in movies.
[00:32:58] You don't see that many extras.
[00:33:01] This is Gladiator.
[00:33:03] I mean...
[00:33:05] Right.
[00:33:05] This is why Gladiator was such a big movie
[00:33:09] because they had so many people there.
[00:33:13] They put so much money into,
[00:33:15] Let's get an actual crowd.
[00:33:18] Let's get...
[00:33:19] Let's get thousands of people here
[00:33:22] watching this event
[00:33:22] and participating in this event.
[00:33:25] And let's put it on the screen.
[00:33:27] And there's a war happening in front of you.
[00:33:30] Yeah.
[00:33:30] I'm jumping way ahead.
[00:33:31] No, you're good.
[00:33:32] You're good.
[00:33:33] I think...
[00:33:33] I think, you know...
[00:33:36] I think that's part of the magic of this movie
[00:33:39] and part of the magic of this podcast
[00:33:40] is going back
[00:33:42] and getting a little bit of that nostalgia
[00:33:44] and remembering what it felt like
[00:33:46] the first time we saw this.
[00:33:47] And I think, you know,
[00:33:49] during Phase 1,
[00:33:51] even up to Avengers,
[00:33:53] there was kind of that, like,
[00:33:55] in-crowd-out-crowd sort of situation, right?
[00:33:58] where, like,
[00:33:59] the people who knew the comics
[00:34:00] were the in-crowd
[00:34:02] and they were excited.
[00:34:03] We all are part of that
[00:34:06] and we all were excited.
[00:34:07] But by this point,
[00:34:09] this had become such a cultural touchstone.
[00:34:12] Marvel was cemented
[00:34:14] in the pantheon of movies.
[00:34:17] Yeah.
[00:34:19] And so, yeah,
[00:34:21] I think, you know,
[00:34:23] thinking back on that is really cool.
[00:34:25] Now,
[00:34:26] this next question
[00:34:27] is going to be a little bit goofy
[00:34:29] because I know,
[00:34:30] at least for me,
[00:34:31] I watch this dang movie all the time.
[00:34:36] But,
[00:34:39] David or Eric,
[00:34:40] I will let one of you guys
[00:34:41] take the actual answer first.
[00:34:43] What were you thinking?
[00:34:45] What were you looking forward to
[00:34:47] about going back to this movie this month?
[00:34:51] I,
[00:34:53] I mean,
[00:34:53] obviously looking forward to it.
[00:34:55] This is what we've been
[00:34:56] talking about,
[00:34:57] Ryan,
[00:34:58] for the last couple years
[00:34:59] about getting to this moment.
[00:35:03] I wanted,
[00:35:04] I was a little bit nervous,
[00:35:05] quite frankly.
[00:35:06] Like,
[00:35:06] there was so,
[00:35:07] there's so much
[00:35:08] in this movie
[00:35:09] that relates back
[00:35:11] to other movies.
[00:35:12] So it doesn't lay,
[00:35:13] doesn't really lay the,
[00:35:15] groundwork too much
[00:35:16] for future stuff
[00:35:16] other than
[00:35:18] maybe
[00:35:19] Loki,
[00:35:20] the TV show.
[00:35:22] Yeah.
[00:35:23] Yeah,
[00:35:24] Loki and
[00:35:25] obviously
[00:35:26] Spider-Man,
[00:35:27] it'll,
[00:35:27] yeah,
[00:35:28] there's some stuff
[00:35:29] that comes back up there.
[00:35:30] Wait,
[00:35:30] Spider who?
[00:35:33] Guy in the room.
[00:35:34] We haven't gotten there yet.
[00:35:35] They have a Spider-Man now?
[00:35:38] I was,
[00:35:39] I'm looking forward to it.
[00:35:40] Like,
[00:35:41] this is,
[00:35:41] I just wanted to make,
[00:35:42] I felt this little bit
[00:35:44] of nervousness
[00:35:44] because I just want to make sure
[00:35:45] like,
[00:35:46] the,
[00:35:47] we touch on everything.
[00:35:49] And,
[00:35:50] the other thing I wanted to know,
[00:35:51] the,
[00:35:52] but the,
[00:35:53] from a viewing content perspective,
[00:35:54] I wanted to see if,
[00:35:56] after having seen
[00:35:59] all the other Marvel stuff,
[00:36:01] if the time stuff,
[00:36:02] if the quantum realm,
[00:36:04] if that made any more sense
[00:36:06] and it does not.
[00:36:07] But,
[00:36:08] anyway,
[00:36:08] how about you,
[00:36:09] Eric?
[00:36:09] Eric.
[00:36:11] Yeah,
[00:36:12] I mean,
[00:36:12] looking forward to this,
[00:36:14] you have invited me
[00:36:16] to all of the Avengers movies
[00:36:17] and so far,
[00:36:19] you have paid off
[00:36:20] on this,
[00:36:21] twice?
[00:36:24] Like,
[00:36:25] out of three?
[00:36:26] Yeah,
[00:36:26] out of three.
[00:36:27] Here's number four.
[00:36:28] We're,
[00:36:29] we're increasing the percentage.
[00:36:31] It's a big deal
[00:36:32] because there was
[00:36:34] such an emotional
[00:36:34] connection,
[00:36:35] connection to this movie
[00:36:37] for me
[00:36:37] and with so many people.
[00:36:40] Like,
[00:36:41] what do you talk about?
[00:36:43] Is this movie good?
[00:36:45] I,
[00:36:45] I don't know.
[00:36:47] This is the culmination
[00:36:49] of so much of my life
[00:36:51] getting to this point.
[00:36:52] But is it good?
[00:36:53] I'm not a film critic.
[00:36:55] I just tell people
[00:36:58] what I like
[00:36:59] and what I don't like.
[00:37:00] And,
[00:37:01] uh,
[00:37:02] what I do like
[00:37:03] is this movie.
[00:37:04] And I've watched it
[00:37:06] so many times
[00:37:07] and sitting down
[00:37:08] and watching it again
[00:37:10] could be,
[00:37:11] like,
[00:37:11] there's this,
[00:37:12] this little bundle
[00:37:13] of nerves,
[00:37:13] like,
[00:37:15] is this,
[00:37:16] is this real?
[00:37:17] Am I watching it again
[00:37:18] and am I getting
[00:37:19] the emotional connection
[00:37:21] to it?
[00:37:22] How does this connect
[00:37:23] to all of the other movies
[00:37:25] I watched recently?
[00:37:27] I,
[00:37:28] I watch a lot
[00:37:29] of these movies
[00:37:31] often.
[00:37:32] Um,
[00:37:33] and sometimes
[00:37:34] it's kind of haphazard.
[00:37:35] Like,
[00:37:36] hey,
[00:37:36] let's just watch
[00:37:37] Captain Marvel again.
[00:37:39] Why?
[00:37:40] Uh,
[00:37:41] it has nothing to do
[00:37:42] with,
[00:37:42] uh,
[00:37:43] my friends
[00:37:44] doing a show
[00:37:44] on Captain Marvel.
[00:37:47] Um,
[00:37:48] but,
[00:37:49] but yeah,
[00:37:50] all of this stuff
[00:37:51] builds in
[00:37:52] and it's,
[00:37:53] it's based on
[00:37:54] years of reading comics,
[00:37:55] which,
[00:37:56] to be fair,
[00:37:57] I don't read anymore.
[00:38:00] I don't read comics now.
[00:38:02] I don't read new comics now.
[00:38:05] I want to.
[00:38:06] Fake fan.
[00:38:07] Yeah,
[00:38:08] yeah.
[00:38:09] Uh,
[00:38:10] you know what?
[00:38:11] You know what?
[00:38:11] Get,
[00:38:12] get ready.
[00:38:12] Get ready.
[00:38:13] Here's the timestamp.
[00:38:14] Language.
[00:38:15] Off.
[00:38:18] I can't,
[00:38:19] I can't.
[00:38:19] Oh,
[00:38:20] by the way,
[00:38:20] for anybody who wants
[00:38:21] to read comics,
[00:38:22] no,
[00:38:22] I'm just kidding.
[00:38:23] Um,
[00:38:25] but yeah,
[00:38:25] it,
[00:38:26] there's so much
[00:38:26] in my life
[00:38:27] that,
[00:38:28] that it,
[00:38:29] like,
[00:38:29] this is entertainment
[00:38:31] that I like
[00:38:31] and it's,
[00:38:32] it's part of my past
[00:38:34] and it's also
[00:38:35] modern day,
[00:38:37] but,
[00:38:38] uh,
[00:38:39] watching these,
[00:38:41] these movies
[00:38:42] and talking about them
[00:38:43] with you,
[00:38:45] it adds more relevance
[00:38:47] to it.
[00:38:47] so I'm also nervous
[00:38:49] to talk about this
[00:38:51] where watching it,
[00:38:53] I've watched this movie
[00:38:54] three times
[00:38:55] in the last two weeks.
[00:38:56] That's a lot of time.
[00:38:58] It's a lot of time.
[00:38:59] And it's,
[00:39:02] it's just like,
[00:39:03] what am I getting out of this
[00:39:05] that's relevant to anybody?
[00:39:07] That's,
[00:39:07] that's the,
[00:39:08] the,
[00:39:08] the thought,
[00:39:09] like,
[00:39:09] am I offering anything
[00:39:11] interesting to anybody?
[00:39:13] And,
[00:39:14] uh,
[00:39:14] you know what?
[00:39:15] The three of us are,
[00:39:17] uh,
[00:39:18] you know,
[00:39:18] where we're podcast celebrities
[00:39:19] and we're all very insightful
[00:39:22] and I think that's what's
[00:39:23] gonna pay off in the end.
[00:39:25] But,
[00:39:26] uh,
[00:39:26] really,
[00:39:27] when it comes down to it,
[00:39:28] I really enjoy this movie.
[00:39:31] I really,
[00:39:32] really enjoy it.
[00:39:33] Yeah.
[00:39:34] And I
[00:39:35] enjoy it more.
[00:39:38] Infinity War
[00:39:40] is,
[00:39:41] is one of my favorites,
[00:39:43] but this one
[00:39:44] pays off.
[00:39:46] everything
[00:39:47] before this movie
[00:39:49] builds to this movie
[00:39:51] and every time I watch it,
[00:39:52] I can feel that weight.
[00:39:54] I can feel that pull
[00:39:56] of
[00:39:57] everything you have done
[00:39:59] in your life
[00:40:00] for the last
[00:40:01] 20
[00:40:01] freaking years
[00:40:03] builds to this.
[00:40:05] Yeah.
[00:40:05] And I'm not,
[00:40:06] I'm not part of this movie.
[00:40:08] It's just,
[00:40:08] it's,
[00:40:09] it's partially
[00:40:12] the drama
[00:40:13] that,
[00:40:14] of the movies
[00:40:15] that leads to it
[00:40:15] and it's partially
[00:40:16] my life
[00:40:17] that leads to it.
[00:40:19] It's,
[00:40:20] it's me saying
[00:40:21] the stories
[00:40:22] that I have invested
[00:40:23] my time and money in
[00:40:25] matter.
[00:40:26] Right.
[00:40:27] Not to mention like
[00:40:28] all those friends
[00:40:29] that you've brought along
[00:40:30] to a movie
[00:40:31] here and there
[00:40:32] or all the times
[00:40:33] you've been sitting
[00:40:34] at home
[00:40:35] and you've,
[00:40:35] you've flipped on,
[00:40:37] you know,
[00:40:38] Iron Man
[00:40:39] or Thor
[00:40:39] or whatever
[00:40:40] while somebody
[00:40:41] was over
[00:40:42] or,
[00:40:43] um,
[00:40:44] and you're like,
[00:40:44] yeah,
[00:40:45] yeah.
[00:40:45] Mickey,
[00:40:45] Mickey Rourke,
[00:40:46] you know,
[00:40:46] he's totally,
[00:40:47] you know what?
[00:40:48] This is underrated.
[00:40:50] People make fun
[00:40:51] of this movie,
[00:40:51] but look at,
[00:40:52] look at his performance.
[00:40:54] That is true.
[00:40:55] We are recording
[00:40:55] this today
[00:40:57] on Black Friday.
[00:40:59] Uh,
[00:40:59] so,
[00:41:00] uh,
[00:41:01] so I can,
[00:41:03] after this recording,
[00:41:04] I am going to go
[00:41:05] watch Iron Man 3
[00:41:06] because it is
[00:41:06] a Christmas movie.
[00:41:07] Oh,
[00:41:08] well,
[00:41:08] I thought you said
[00:41:09] you were going to
[00:41:09] run to Walmart
[00:41:10] and go buy like
[00:41:11] a $200 TV
[00:41:12] for thousands
[00:41:13] of other people.
[00:41:14] Buy a,
[00:41:15] uh,
[00:41:16] the components
[00:41:17] for an electrical whip
[00:41:18] that you can
[00:41:19] slap at people
[00:41:20] and do nothing with.
[00:41:23] But,
[00:41:23] but no,
[00:41:24] I agree with you guys.
[00:41:25] I think like,
[00:41:25] as far as thinking
[00:41:26] about this towards
[00:41:27] the podcast lens,
[00:41:28] it was,
[00:41:29] how do we do
[00:41:30] this justice?
[00:41:31] And,
[00:41:31] and thank goodness
[00:41:32] we already had
[00:41:33] overrun several movies,
[00:41:35] um,
[00:41:36] by this point
[00:41:37] to where we're
[00:41:38] comfortable with
[00:41:38] you guys getting
[00:41:39] a lot of content
[00:41:40] sometimes on movies
[00:41:41] and.
[00:41:42] Oh,
[00:41:42] thank goodness
[00:41:43] you did six episodes
[00:41:44] on Black Panther.
[00:41:47] I don't,
[00:41:47] so bad about this
[00:41:49] one episode.
[00:41:52] So,
[00:41:53] yeah,
[00:41:54] I,
[00:41:54] I think
[00:41:55] going back to watching,
[00:41:56] I watch this movie
[00:41:57] all the time.
[00:41:57] I mean,
[00:41:58] this is,
[00:41:59] this is one,
[00:42:01] I'll watch YouTube
[00:42:01] clips of it.
[00:42:03] I,
[00:42:04] now,
[00:42:04] I will say
[00:42:06] that does not
[00:42:07] change
[00:42:08] how much my
[00:42:09] tear ducts
[00:42:10] have to do work
[00:42:11] during this movie,
[00:42:13] which we'll talk about
[00:42:14] in the breakdown here
[00:42:15] in a second.
[00:42:15] many times.
[00:42:17] Why?
[00:42:18] Why?
[00:42:19] I think I counted
[00:42:20] three or four
[00:42:21] different
[00:42:23] times where I
[00:42:24] weeped like a child.
[00:42:25] Why,
[00:42:26] why,
[00:42:26] why are you so
[00:42:27] cold?
[00:42:29] Yeah.
[00:42:29] Three or four
[00:42:30] times?
[00:42:31] Come on.
[00:42:34] Um,
[00:42:35] so yeah,
[00:42:36] I,
[00:42:36] I,
[00:42:37] you know,
[00:42:37] it's not like,
[00:42:38] I,
[00:42:38] I could have probably
[00:42:39] done this episode
[00:42:40] without watching the movie.
[00:42:42] I,
[00:42:42] I very much,
[00:42:43] this is one where
[00:42:44] I've seen it so many times
[00:42:46] I could have probably
[00:42:47] just rattled it off
[00:42:49] from memory.
[00:42:50] Um,
[00:42:51] why did you tell me
[00:42:52] that before,
[00:42:52] man?
[00:42:53] It could have saved me
[00:42:53] hours of work.
[00:42:55] But,
[00:42:56] I watched it three times
[00:42:57] in the last week.
[00:42:58] I told you.
[00:42:59] I watched it
[00:43:01] .25 speed.
[00:43:02] Oh gosh.
[00:43:03] It took me 12 hours.
[00:43:05] Um,
[00:43:05] but that's the value
[00:43:06] of this movie
[00:43:07] and that's the value
[00:43:08] of this project.
[00:43:09] This podcast is like,
[00:43:11] you know,
[00:43:12] to do the work
[00:43:12] is to go back
[00:43:13] and watch it.
[00:43:14] And,
[00:43:14] and I think
[00:43:15] that this is one
[00:43:17] where I would have
[00:43:18] watched the movie
[00:43:19] without the podcast,
[00:43:20] but it is so rewarding
[00:43:21] now.
[00:43:23] Um,
[00:43:24] like this is why
[00:43:25] you started a podcast.
[00:43:26] Yeah,
[00:43:27] maybe.
[00:43:27] Yeah,
[00:43:28] this is,
[00:43:29] this is
[00:43:31] truth be told
[00:43:32] little bit of
[00:43:33] behind the scenes.
[00:43:34] Um,
[00:43:36] when I first came up
[00:43:37] with the concept
[00:43:37] for this podcast,
[00:43:38] the original idea
[00:43:39] was actually to be
[00:43:40] a lot closer
[00:43:41] to what Bowie
[00:43:41] Splaining is doing.
[00:43:42] I originally wanted
[00:43:45] like,
[00:43:45] what are we doing?
[00:43:47] A noob.
[00:43:48] I wanted a noob
[00:43:48] and a know-it-all.
[00:43:50] Uh,
[00:43:51] okay.
[00:43:51] Okay.
[00:43:52] I like it.
[00:43:53] And you got neither.
[00:43:54] Actually,
[00:43:54] my original,
[00:43:56] my original concept
[00:43:57] was a new,
[00:43:59] was a three,
[00:44:00] was a three host show,
[00:44:01] a noob,
[00:44:02] a know-it-all
[00:44:02] and then like a comics
[00:44:05] know-it-all
[00:44:05] and then,
[00:44:06] Eric's sitting
[00:44:06] in the background
[00:44:07] going,
[00:44:10] yeah.
[00:44:11] And then a,
[00:44:13] um,
[00:44:14] movie know-it-all.
[00:44:15] So,
[00:44:15] so somebody who was
[00:44:16] really well-versed,
[00:44:17] seen all the movies,
[00:44:19] somebody who really,
[00:44:20] really was well-versed,
[00:44:21] probably I would have
[00:44:22] played that role,
[00:44:22] the guy who had read
[00:44:23] a lot of the comics.
[00:44:25] Um,
[00:44:26] and then somebody,
[00:44:27] ideally somebody who
[00:44:28] had seen none of the movies,
[00:44:29] but that is incredibly
[00:44:31] hard to find.
[00:44:32] Oh gosh.
[00:44:34] Yeah.
[00:44:35] Somebody who's interested
[00:44:35] in podcasting that
[00:44:36] hasn't seen the movies.
[00:44:38] Okay.
[00:44:39] I'm sorry.
[00:44:40] I'm,
[00:44:40] I'm really sorry.
[00:44:41] Really sorry.
[00:44:41] I did have a friend
[00:44:43] in college who had
[00:44:44] never seen any
[00:44:44] Star Wars movies.
[00:44:46] Oh wow.
[00:44:47] I had a coworker
[00:44:49] and we,
[00:44:50] we,
[00:44:51] we took Lisa
[00:44:52] to,
[00:44:52] uh,
[00:44:53] we,
[00:44:54] well,
[00:44:54] well,
[00:44:54] oh gosh,
[00:44:55] what was the first one?
[00:44:56] Cause we showed her
[00:44:57] Phantom Menace
[00:44:58] and at the,
[00:44:59] at the end she's like,
[00:45:00] oh,
[00:45:01] that was menacing.
[00:45:02] Like,
[00:45:03] yeah.
[00:45:04] Yeah.
[00:45:04] Great.
[00:45:04] I think it was,
[00:45:06] I think it was
[00:45:06] Attack of the Clones.
[00:45:07] That was the first movie
[00:45:08] we took her to in theaters.
[00:45:09] She was one,
[00:45:10] she's a great friend.
[00:45:12] Um,
[00:45:13] but it was so interesting
[00:45:15] to work through this
[00:45:17] with her,
[00:45:18] this process where she
[00:45:19] had never seen anything
[00:45:21] Star Wars
[00:45:23] and she,
[00:45:24] we started
[00:45:25] with Phantom Menace.
[00:45:28] That's a,
[00:45:29] sorry.
[00:45:30] That's wild.
[00:45:31] I'm sorry,
[00:45:31] Lisa.
[00:45:32] You're not listening to this.
[00:45:33] It's okay.
[00:45:34] But sorry,
[00:45:35] America,
[00:45:36] for starting someone
[00:45:37] on Phantom Menace.
[00:45:39] Oh man.
[00:45:41] Yeah.
[00:45:42] Yeah.
[00:45:43] So,
[00:45:43] so that,
[00:45:44] that was the original concept
[00:45:45] was like,
[00:45:46] like I say,
[00:45:47] kind of two,
[00:45:48] two varying levels
[00:45:48] of know-it-all
[00:45:49] in a noob.
[00:45:50] Um,
[00:45:51] struggle to find hosts
[00:45:52] ended up with,
[00:45:53] ended up finding,
[00:45:55] great host,
[00:45:56] co-host here in David.
[00:45:57] Ended up with David?
[00:46:00] Actually,
[00:46:01] thanks to,
[00:46:02] to Eric's suggestion.
[00:46:04] Truthfully,
[00:46:04] you know,
[00:46:05] we're,
[00:46:05] we're kind of,
[00:46:06] this is a big,
[00:46:07] this is like a landmark episode,
[00:46:08] so we should probably talk
[00:46:09] about some of this stuff,
[00:46:10] but,
[00:46:11] um,
[00:46:11] we'll talk about it more
[00:46:12] probably in the phase
[00:46:13] wrap up or whatever,
[00:46:15] but,
[00:46:16] um,
[00:46:17] but yeah,
[00:46:17] so,
[00:46:18] so,
[00:46:19] and at the time
[00:46:20] it was,
[00:46:20] I wanted an excuse
[00:46:21] to go back and watch,
[00:46:22] especially,
[00:46:23] like,
[00:46:25] phase two,
[00:46:26] where,
[00:46:27] I watch Iron Man 3
[00:46:28] every year,
[00:46:29] but other than that,
[00:46:30] I don't watch
[00:46:31] phase two movies that much.
[00:46:32] And I was like,
[00:46:33] how do I,
[00:46:35] how do I capitalize on that?
[00:46:36] And,
[00:46:37] and like,
[00:46:38] how do I,
[00:46:39] how do I make something
[00:46:40] interesting out of that?
[00:46:41] And,
[00:46:42] thus,
[00:46:43] Puny Pod was born,
[00:46:45] um,
[00:46:46] and so,
[00:46:47] so,
[00:46:48] yeah,
[00:46:48] it really was
[00:46:50] that,
[00:46:50] that idea of like,
[00:46:52] we're just past Endgame,
[00:46:55] I,
[00:46:55] want to go back
[00:46:57] and rewatch stuff,
[00:46:58] and so,
[00:46:59] getting to Endgame
[00:47:00] is kind of,
[00:47:02] it's kind of one of those,
[00:47:04] those,
[00:47:05] landmarks that,
[00:47:06] that the podcast was
[00:47:07] always kind of headed towards.
[00:47:09] It's a,
[00:47:09] it's a mile marker
[00:47:11] for sure.
[00:47:12] Um,
[00:47:13] it is the end of a phase,
[00:47:15] mostly.
[00:47:16] There's another movie.
[00:47:18] It's the end.
[00:47:19] Let's be honest.
[00:47:19] Let's not kid ourselves.
[00:47:20] Uh,
[00:47:22] Spider-Man,
[00:47:23] he gets his,
[00:47:24] he gets his things in.
[00:47:25] Yeah.
[00:47:26] I,
[00:47:26] I think that's a good
[00:47:29] summary
[00:47:31] of the phase
[00:47:32] while being a good movie.
[00:47:34] Yes.
[00:47:36] So,
[00:47:37] are we talking about
[00:47:37] Spider-Man today
[00:47:38] or
[00:47:39] the other one?
[00:47:40] Well,
[00:47:40] let's,
[00:47:41] let's get into
[00:47:42] our
[00:47:43] breakdown.
[00:47:44] Oh,
[00:47:45] no.
[00:47:46] Um,
[00:47:47] so,
[00:47:47] this is a three hour movie
[00:47:48] and we're starting now.
[00:47:49] Whoa.
[00:47:50] Ooh,
[00:47:50] yeah.
[00:47:52] And we also have
[00:47:53] some closing thoughts.
[00:47:55] Hmm.
