[00:00:00] Welcome to Puny Pod, the podcast who are a bunch of A-holes. Welcome to Puny Pod, everyone! We are a podcast where we re-watch the MCU in release order. I'm Ryan and my co-host who got my dick message is David! Good word again! That's my grossest start!
[00:00:48] I thought you're gonna call me the... ...scary in the poach you with a knife or something like... ...my co-host who has lane with an Oscar variant is David! There we go! How are we doing today David? I'm doing well man, here you go.
[00:01:07] I'm doing pretty well, it's a snowy day here in Colorado, so perfect day to bunker down and get in the podcast studio and tell these good folks what's good. And let's see here. So this month we actually have a special guest that we've invited.
[00:01:26] We have Rob from the Bantha Milk Podcast. What's up Rob? What's up players? How are you guys? Wasn't ready for that? Do it well man, do it well. Good to see you again.
[00:01:44] Good to see you guys. This is gonna be fun. It's one of my favorite Marvel movies I think of all time actually, so I'm pretty excited about this one.
[00:01:54] Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was really excited when you said you were interested in this one because for me and I am spoiling a little bit of our content for later in the episode. But I remember leaving this movie in the theaters.
[00:02:10] One of my first thoughts was like, this is what it felt like the first time I watched a Star Wars movie. Yeah, I can see that. I can definitely see that.
[00:02:19] And the fact that it was so much different than the rest of the previous Marvel movies leading up to it was what made it a lot of fun for me as well. Awesome yeah, for sure, for sure.
[00:02:33] Well, this month we are covering like I think I just mentioned and I haven't mentioned so far unless you picked it up with the boats. We are covering guardians of the galaxy. So David, it's up to you. Give us the deeds.
[00:02:47] Sure, guardians of the galaxy later renamed guardians of the galaxy volume one after they came out with the sequels was released August first 2014. So just five months after Captain America, the winner soldier.
[00:03:03] This was the first Marvel movie that didn't feature Avengers and it was, you know, Rob is you said earlier was much different than what they done before. So basically we made a space opera right way different than their earlier films.
[00:03:17] So the fourth installment. So the number 10 movie in the MCU overall runs two hours two minutes production budget was 170 million dollars.
[00:03:28] Opening weekend 94 million domestic gross, 334 million worldwide gross, 771 million dollars. It was number three in 2014 behind the Hobbit Battle of five armies and ahead of Thunder Games, walking Jay part one. Hungry. I'm not saying to get me to check. Sorry. I was conflating to.
[00:03:50] Conflating to different movies in my mind and then the rather Disney properties that year, winner soldier, amazing spending two big hero six. But this was the biggest the biggest property that had that year.
[00:04:02] And it's the number 17. And assume we all time in terms of worldwide gross right behind guardians of the galaxy volume three and ahead of Thor Levin Thunder.
[00:04:11] Again, critics love it. Audits loved it 92% score on Ron Tomatoes. It was directed by James gun. He was not necessarily the first choice but other directors would considered were Duncan Jones who did moon and source code,
[00:04:28] Con Trevor Road, Jurassic World, Peyton Reed and Annabotan and Ryan Fleck. We're all considered James Wood was hired Ryan Reed would go into hell.
[00:04:39] And and Bona Fleck would direct Captain Marvel. So he was previously screenwriter for two Scooby-D movies and Zack Snyder's 2004 remake it dawn of the dead any directed slother and super. So Fige was familiar with his work. You called him in at some point in time in 2011.
[00:04:58] Like it's some concept art for guardians of the galaxy. Gun actually wasn't really interested but realized he wasn't a typical Marvel comic book movie.
[00:05:07] He didn't want to do that kind of typical superhero movie with the plot and bad bad guys and stuff like that. So he wanted to take inspiration front Frank Miller. He wanted to whose work was connected to Marvel.
[00:05:16] He wouldn't make his own art and he wanted to make a film that was both a Marvel film and a James gun film.
[00:05:25] And so he's getting kind of interested in doing a context Josh Weedon whom he knew socially nasty for help and we didn't said you're too late.
[00:05:34] I already talked to all those guys about you and he got the job in September 2012. So the screenplay was by James gun originally Nicole Pearlman was hired to go she started with the script.
[00:05:44] She knew at some point in time a writer director would come up with and and change it so she wasn't too naive as to the project. He wrote the draft when gun now it gets a little get little messy here because gun rewrote the draft saying,
[00:05:58] quote, got the ball rolling with a concept with the premise but that he had basically created the story and all the characters.
[00:06:04] And so he didn't want to share writing credits with Nicole Pearlman and allegedly he's blind tactics to try to keep her name out of this credits in an attempt to get the sole writing credits.
[00:06:14] So this one like the incredible Hulk went to W. J. arbitration which terminate both contributed significantly and which share the screenplay credit equally.
[00:06:25] She is the first woman to be credited for writing a Marvel screenplay. She also even threw an F. James gun party when she won a fight, which explains why the problem didn't come back for any of the other guardians movement.
[00:06:36] They could see they can see the smoke from the bridges she burned from miles away. In 2012 Marvel offered to give Fox an extension in time in order to reboot dare to double in exchange for the rights to serve Marvel.
[00:06:52] Cosmic characters including galactis and silver surfer which would have been cool but fox declining offer at one point time an Ironman camey was planned that didn't happen because Rob Denton wasn't sure if he's going to continue on with the franchise or not and then he later signed on to do three Avengers movies and Cap America Civil War and made a boat to the money.
[00:07:11] Thanos was almost cut for the movie but the Marvel creative committee mandated that he appear in our rod and staff connection to the Avengers and they were also intent on getting rid of the 70s found soundtrack but that fortalling stayed in.
[00:07:24] And then the cast it is an all brand new cast with the exception of two people we have seen or heard before so we have Chris Pratt whose Peter Quill star lord Zoysadania's kamora.
[00:07:38] Bradley Cooper Shrocket Dave Batista's Drax Vin Diesel is grouped Lee Paces run in the accuser Michael Rutger is Yondu Keringilin who previously had addition for Sharon Carter is Nebula John C. Briley as Roman day was fun to sing John C. Rally remember we're singing the movie I was like wait what's going on here.
[00:07:57] I'd clink close as Nova Prime Dejman Hansu is Krath Shongan James Guns brother is Kraglin and also the stand in for rocket Josh Brolin who we heard before or saw I'm sorry saw briefly before in as Thanos and then Stanley mixes traditional cameo. And that's a pre-thirt.
[00:08:20] He's built as quote San Daryon ladies man which I thought was kind of funny. But those were as always all things marble, Serf and casting director had other people that were presented at different points in time.
[00:08:39] Before he auditioned, Gun thought that Chris Pratt was all wrong before he auditioned. Joe some Gordon Levitt turned it down due to conflict because he was going to be in Sin City. Guns second choice Glenn Howardton from it's always sending Philadelphia which I thought would be interesting.
[00:08:58] Yeah it would be very interesting also consider were Lee Pace audition for the role John Quizzinski who obviously would later James Marston who was Cyclops Zach Levitt was Fantrol and among others an Aaron Paul and I really really glad they didn't go down the Aaron Paul out.
[00:09:17] Yeah the tracks Jason Mamoa was declined the role because he didn't want to be typecast into action movies and now he's. Typecast and yeah and then Chad Ruposman was also considered for drags tracks as well.
[00:09:33] Groot had a lot of other voice actors Adam Sandler, David Tenet, Jim Carrey, a John Benjamin and Roman Day other actors considered were he Laurie, Alan Rickman, Ken Watnabi and for Gamora it's an interesting very long list.
[00:09:50] I don't know if he's going to be a little bit more involved in the role of Reed every single name because it takes too long but Olivia Wild was considered.
[00:09:56] I mean the C. Fried she was she was offered the role they were both approach, but they both declined. Olivia Wild had a conflict Amanda C. Fried said she was worried there's going to be a flop and she was worried about the makeup.
[00:10:08] I don't know if she's the decision for anything after that. Danny Newsom was Eradass and Gina Crono all edition works that are for their roles Chris Pratt made $1.5 million he would go on to make about 20, 25 million dolls altogether. Zoe Seldin made a tidy 100,000.
[00:10:27] Deep about T. St. made 1.4 million, Karen Gill made 140,000 and then over time obviously their sellers just got exponentially bigger as their characters appeared in more properties. So those are the deeds.
[00:10:39] I feel like this cast is one of the more established cast I guess I'll say watching this movie the whole time it was like isn't that wait isn't that wait isn't that like every actor was something
[00:10:56] like I recognize them from someplace else which I don't know that I could say that about most of the rest of the movies. At least in the the amounts that it was sent here.
[00:11:09] It's pretty impressive when you think they had they start with a slate they have no returning characters other than Thanos and I forgot Glenn closest and the movies I was a Glenn closest and smoke good word is number prime.
[00:11:22] And so I think they did a really really good job of nailing the cast doesn't seem kind of creaky at all there's in a character and there they seem like you're sending the acting basis very well established and I thought they did a really good job of getting the proper mix with the chemistry right to the they got and they got them.
[00:11:39] You know they didn't have super huge household names and Chris Pratt was doing like. Yeah yeah he's a good he's a slubby dude a parking rack so. Yeah yeah yeah and. Lee pays how to hear that year because he was also in the habit he was.
[00:11:58] Fandrel in the the Hobbit series so yeah kind of he got to have a little bit of a time that year I guess couldn't recognize him in the movie though.
[00:12:08] No no at yeah going from blonde long hair elf over to being blue with the dried blood of your enemies as paint on your face a little bit different slightly different vibe I would say.
[00:12:24] So yeah I wanted to jump in here since we are since this is the first in a quote unquote individual film right like. Iron man is an individual film for.
[00:12:38] Captain America those are individual films this yes it's a team but it functions more like an individual film within the greater context. So I wanted to jump in and kind of give some comic book history here for y'all.
[00:12:53] So guardians of the galaxy their first original team was introduced in 1969 in Marvel superhero's number 18 now that. That group of guardians looked much different and actually when we get to guardians to spoiler alert.
[00:13:11] You may hear us say some of these names again, but the original group of guardians was y'all do who. Hey he's around here major victory who was a human from the 20th century. Martinx which was a poluvian and Charlie 27, which is a jovian.
[00:13:34] So that was the original guardians of the galaxy group since that time they have been kind of retconned as being in a separate universe so they're not part of earth 616 that they. They are in earth 691 that that part of the multiverse.
[00:13:56] Now jump forward in time to this actual set of guardians that we see in this movie. They were introduced with some additional folks here in 2008 in guardians of the galaxy volume two number one and this is in the earth 616.
[00:14:21] And you do have Star Lord Gamora, Drax, Rocket and then in addition to that you are missing group at that time but you do also add Adam or lock and file a vell.
[00:14:39] So kind of a little mostly the group that we have here was kind of the comics at that time. So we have the first appearance and some backstory on the individual characters. Drax, the destroyer was first introduced in invincible Iron Man number five or number 55 sorry 1973,
[00:15:05] created by Jim Starlin. He was a human mutate at the time so he was not a, you know it was not from another planet he was actually a human in the in that timeline.
[00:15:22] You also have Gamora so Gamora was introduced in strange tales 180 again created by Jim Starlin June of 1975 and she she was a Zen will bar in mutate. And Star Lord me and he was introduced in Marvel preview number four back in January of 1976.
[00:15:57] He was as we all know him to be a human hybridized with something else spoiler alert. And it introduced in Marvel preview number seven July of so 1976 created by Bill Mon Montalo and Keith Giffin. He is from half world which we do see in this movie.
[00:16:26] And then group our buddy group. Introduced in tales to astonish number 13 in 1960 I believe that was the first out of these if my memory serves me correctly. Created by as with anything in 1960 Stanley Larry Leaver and Jack Kirby.
[00:16:47] So group has the longest stand and he is as we see in this movie for Colossus so. Definitely using a more modern more interesting team I think the original team would have maybe put us in the gramma takes your lunch money realm because they were weird.
[00:17:09] But getting that using kind of a more sleek cool 2000s team here in this movie so. Did did either of you read the comics before the movie? I did not. I did not know I wasn't really on the galactic side when I was reading comics at that point.
[00:17:30] Yeah, no I did not I read a couple but it wasn't to your point. Right I was I was not heavy into it so what the question is so when you heard hey they're making a movie about. I think that's the first time I remember being like.
[00:17:57] I remember when they they announced guardians the galaxy and I was like you know what this is a risk right and and on our new show over on. Monthly bugle.
[00:18:15] We're talking about the risks that that marvel is taking and you know I think this was a season where marvel's risks were paying off at the time and and spoiler alert for our review of this later on I liked this movie but.
[00:18:31] I do think that the this was a risk and this was. Much different from where marvel was and I was excited that they were going to get a little bit weird I didn't read a lot of the galactic stuff but I always like the idea of the galactic.
[00:18:53] I was excited about the existence right I always thought that that was cool that that. Marvel went to space and went to space in cool ways it wasn't just like. A son that happened to be read that didn't power the people on crypt on but.
[00:19:13] Instead it was like humans that were in space and all that stuff and I thought that was a really cool idea so I was excited. I did like I did privately think this is going to be a flop because it was it was such a big risk.
[00:19:31] How about you David? I think I like you didn't have a grounding in the comic books and I was curious. I didn't know what to expect I expected it would be.
[00:19:46] It would look great and I was hoping that it would be really good and but I just I didn't see.
[00:19:52] I didn't really see the connection to the rest of the MCU and I you know knowing a little bit about the plot I thought I thought I thought it too was a risk you had you know Chris Pratt. I mean I think even when they were doing the.
[00:20:06] Doing some previews before it came out people liked Chris Pratt people liked the music and so for that reason they felt like okay we don't have a flop at our hands. So there was always this is one of the movies they talk about where.
[00:20:18] They're worried if they're drinking their own cool aid. And if they think something is good something is not which is you know. I kind of a we seem to be kind of in that a similar state right now but I I I.
[00:20:32] A little nervous like I remember Chris Pat Pratt is like the fat dude on. I thought super funny but I was like I seem to be super hero but at this point in time I'm just kind of trusting the process. Yeah. I'll go ahead.
[00:20:48] Same thing like I I didn't watch or read any comics or anything and my son is big. He didn't recalmix either but he was the one who was always like we have to go see this movie if they could see this movie.
[00:21:00] So this is for all the Marvel movies so he and I would always go like opening weekend to see the movies and stuff.
[00:21:06] And I remember seeing the trailers and I remember thinking the same thing about Chris Pratt and knowing that he was like he said the fact guy from.
[00:21:14] Parks and Rec but then they were doing a lot of promos all about it and he was on a lot of talk shows and whatever and there was the what did Chris Pratt do to get in shape for this movie type of thing.
[00:21:28] And I knew who Dave Bautee still was from WWE so it was like okay this is interesting. It didn't bother me that there was a raccoon flying around the space because to me it was just like okay it's a space movie different.
[00:21:43] Different you know different creatures could be from different planets and whatever and they could look like raccoons or whatever. So I know I was excited for it when then when you saw the previews with the soundtrack and stuff.
[00:21:54] I was like oh this is going to be cool music Chris Pratt was funny on Parks and Rec so it's going to definitely give you that. comedic twist to it that Star Wars doesn't really have but Marvel has a really good job of making.
[00:22:10] The sci-fi movies and the super hero movies with a lot of jokes and stuff in there so knowing that the previous movies were getting funnier.
[00:22:19] Then I knew this one with with a Chris Pratt type character in there was going to be funny and entertaining so I was really excited for it.
[00:22:27] And also since it was such a jump from the regular MCU movies where it's like okay now we have a space opera let's see what happens with it so I was I was stoked for it I was excited for it.
[00:22:40] Yeah, let's see here so going back into this movie this month. David how how were you feeling about this one?
[00:22:53] I was actually pretty pumped to rewatch it the one thing again on rewatch all these movies is what what little bread crumbs do they lay for the future there's some pretty obvious ones will get into when we review the movie but I was curious to see if.
[00:23:10] Any kind of relationship thread, especially in light of what happens later on in other Avengers movies like how looking back at some of these relationships it formed now.
[00:23:20] And those are kind of things I was looking forward to and then just sitting back enjoying it because it's a it's a really really fun movie how about how about you. Rob what were you looking forward to on rewatch.
[00:23:32] Yeah, like I said because this is one of the marvel movies that I've watched over and over and over again.
[00:23:39] Previously like when when it first came out of Disney plus I probably watched it two or three times and whatever so I was excited to rewatch it again this week.
[00:23:49] Just to remember how much fun it was into to have everything coming back into my head so and now I know you guys don't like to talk about this but.
[00:23:59] And with after seeing the movies after this like you said all the bread crumbs it was fun rewatching it now and going oh that's for that and that goes to that and stuff so I think all the marvel movies if you can sit back and rewatch all them again the really old ones from ironman and stuff they really lay down a lot of those bread crumbs leading up to their later movies which I think is is amazing writing that they're able to.
[00:24:28] have the foresight to say okay we're going to take this part of movement and use it later and that stuff so it was fun watching all those bread crumbs and like you said there are a couple very obvious ones but even the obvious ones I was like.
[00:24:43] It's obvious now but I don't think it was obvious in 2014. No it was a lot more subtle and side note probably gave me a great idea for a podcast watching marvel movies from beginning to end let's do this.
[00:24:58] Right have a right how much you what did you what were you thinking about as you rewatching it. I was genuinely excited to get back to this one I so I love this movie it's it's one of my favorites in the MCU.
[00:25:14] The second and third guardians are tonalysimilar but not they're not the same they're just not the same movie right like there's the they matured a lot and they they grew as as like part of the MCU and that sort of thing.
[00:25:35] So to get back to kind of this very basic like if we're being really honest this movie was pretty basic and was really fun. And I don't mean basic in a negative way right it's it's a very fun movie it's very.
[00:25:50] I'm a brain candy type of movie that you can just sit down and watch and enjoy which I love it and so getting into this one was really fun I was really excited to get back to it.
[00:26:04] You guys both mentioned trying to watch for the things that that were later used in the MCU further on down the line we now have as of as of recording we have.
[00:26:20] You know, I think you have to be more movies and a special from guardians of the galaxy. And so that property's been pretty exposed in not over exposed but you know it's been used well and plus the guardians characters have shown up in other movies.
[00:26:41] And I can watch the origin and with all the things that we know today kind of go back and enjoy the OG if you will.
[00:26:51] Sure, and it's well it's a movie that even today even if never no one's ever watched a single Marvel movie if someone said what should I watch first I might even suggest this movie because you don't really need to have much of a background.
[00:27:04] And I'm just taking from the jump we'll kind of get into like the different emotions that it pulls from you as you watch it but it's very, very easy to get into and when you think about it creating this.
[00:27:17] These fantastic worlds and planets kind of like again, rather like Star Wars you've you've created something out of nothing in terms of visually bringing forward this these weird characters and making sense.
[00:27:28] And there are all fun characters even even when they're angry they're still fun so they're definitely fun to watch and fun to watch again.
[00:27:38] And you know when they did the holiday special that was super fun because they really want super campy on that and super like silly with it.
[00:27:47] And I feel these are characters that you can go super silly with I don't know if you could be as silly with with an Ironman character whatever so it allows you to have as many like you said two more movies and a special after this because the characters are fun and you can twist them in different ways for each of the upcoming movies and specials and stuff.
[00:28:13] And they couldn't be I mean you on it's very face again some of the ridiculous characters you have you can't be straight face it can't be serious like otherwise it would I don't think it would you wouldn't care about the characters as much right yeah.
[00:28:28] Yeah absolutely well y'all right before we get into this breakdown here because we are about to we are on the press this but I am going to go ahead we're going to take a quick commercial break.
[00:28:41] And then we will be right back with y'all with the breakdown of the movies see all in a bit it's amazing that you never see these heroes hydrate I mean there's no way that they went through the whole battle of New York without needing crush a water break or something.
[00:28:53] I know for me I can't even make it through the work day without my water bottle for those days where water alone just doesn't cut it I love to add some liquid IV to the make their little tubes make it super convenient to toss them in a backpack and go on an adventure for me the lemon lime flavor is really the best it's almost like a little margarita.
[00:29:10] Helps your hangover instead of causing one.
[00:29:12] One stick of liquid IV in 16 ounces of water hydrates you two times faster and more efficiently than water alone real people real flavor real hydrating get 20% off when you go to liquid IV dot com and use the code puning pod at checkout that's 20% off of anything order when you shop better hydration today using promo code puning pod.
[00:29:35] That's p u n y p o d at liquid IV dot com welcome back y'all let's get started here so the movie opens it is the year 1988 and Peter Quill sits in the waiting room of a hospital listening with his headphones to awesome mix volume one on his walkman his grandpa comes out and lets him and gets him so that he can say goodbye to his mom who's dying of a brain tumor.
[00:30:06] His mom gives him a present and tells him his father was an angel and that Peter is just like him. She asks for his hand but he's he's too scared to take it and then she dies. Peter is distraught and runs outside and is abducted by a spaceship.
[00:30:23] And then we get to see the marble credits. When you said the part about the angel the we your voice almost reminded me of Anakin are you an angel. I just got a little we got an issue right there. Oh man that's funny.
[00:30:42] So we jump forward 26 years it's an out 2014 we see Quill on the planet morag and we we have a fun opening scene.
[00:30:51] He's searching for a mysterious or well listening to awesome mix volume one on his walkman this time he's listening to coming get your love by red bone which fun fact was also the song that.
[00:31:05] My wife and the rest of my wedding party and I all walked into our reception to. Oh that's fun. Yeah. I won't lie and I will tell you that this movie played some part in that decision.
[00:31:19] Better the better the better the better the coming into the Pini colotis on which is words it's really disturbing. That's very. I'm really glad. I was step out of my lady real quick in this in the part I just want to point out like two two things one.
[00:31:36] The mom is played by Laura Haddock who had a very minor role in Captain America the first Avenger and in 2018 James going to confirm that that character was Meredith Grills.
[00:31:47] Mother and therefore Peter Quills grandmother and the other thing I was going to say is it's just like this is just a rough day for grandpa Quill like. It's a lot of dies and then like oh crap like I lost my grandson like. You're grandson disappears yeah. Yeah.
[00:32:04] I'll rewatch again. I was just like how man and this dish reminds this is like Pixar up emotional like let's just start turning the. Turn in the water works. Yeah.
[00:32:16] Yeah. And I will also mention we were talking a little bit about the soundtrack to I was doing some research and I saw James gun actually wrote the songs into the script which is a very.
[00:32:30] Uncommon practice usually it's hey let's go see what we can get and put it in instead he wrote it in and basically forced marbles hand to go get those.
[00:32:41] Right. He evidently he went he knew what he wanted for the music the the walkman which is ironic enough almost one of almost a character in the movie right because because of it's importance and James gun went through.
[00:32:56] 1970's top billboard you know top songs created a huge playlist that he would play in his house and then sometimes he would think of scenes that correspond to the music or hear a song.
[00:33:07] And it would think of how that would correspond to the scene got it down to like 140 songs and then ended up with what we have here. Yeah. Ryan I don't know if you're old enough did you have cassettes as a kid or were you a CD kid.
[00:33:22] I had cassettes as a young child so I I was born at the very beginning of the 90s literally like 1990. So very very beginning so I had some cassettes but largely CDs. So David have you worn out any cassettes because I know I have.
[00:33:44] Yeah, so he's been listening to this one tape for 26 years how did he not wear it out that's my question. Space magic you got to be really careful and you also got to clip the little tabs to make sure you don't actually record over it. Record over it.
[00:34:02] We are old. One of the other things little interesting facts that I heard about the when I because I kind of nerded out on the music. Was that all the songs can fit onto one 45 minutes think if it on one side of a cassette which is a cool.
[00:34:19] There's one that's really cool. So yeah. Peter is on more ag he heads to find this orb well he is trying to find the orb. You do see in the little laser projection you do get a cameo from I believe it's Sean guns.
[00:34:39] Daughter and dog if memory serves me correctly. They they're playing together in the kind of laser projection of what life used to be on more ag. But. Then Peter does find the orb he's trying to get it and as he as he picks it up.
[00:35:01] He is almost immediately ambushed by a crees soldier. Coreath the pursuer and a couple of saccarians. Or scarry scarry. Because it's a car and thank you. I thought it had to. I thought it had to be a car will come back. Don't you worry. After gunfight.
[00:35:27] Coreath's men are killed Peter makes it to his ship the Milano named after a listen Milano. And escapes. As Quil leaves more ag he has an awkward exchange with a forgotten female passenger. Super awkward.
[00:35:47] Who happens to also be wearing his childhood t-shirt from when he was abducted off earth. That's it. I that kind of when I read that I kind of bothered me just a little bit. And listen, it's just like.
[00:36:02] I just something it's like some sort of go to Mac move like a hey years you know when I'm subjected to ears the shirt I wore kind of thing. Or it's just I mean I guess maybe he just had it like in a dresser in the Milano.
[00:36:13] Somewhere and she just found it or something. I could see that only because I was on double there when I was an eighth grade and I still have that double day t shirt in my drawer. It's a size medium. It doesn't fit me.
[00:36:30] So I can see in keeping that shirt. In a drawer for someone known reason and the girl going through and this is the only shirts that fits me so I'm going to put this shirt on.
[00:36:42] But the question is have you watched it since then or does it still have your blood sweat and tears. It's all there in it. It has been watched since the moment. Double day DNA is all gone now. Oh, I need this.
[00:36:57] So then Quil gets call from Yondu who heads up the ravinger platoon that raised Peter. Yondu reminds Peter that he saved him and demands that Peter give him the orb. Peter decides he's going to sell it on his own so Peter hangs up.
[00:37:14] Yondu's men give Yondu some grief for always being soft on Peter despite his constant betrayals which Yondu brushes off and threatens them with his arrow. Being more interested in finding out who else is interested in the orb. This arrow is a throwback to Yondu's OG appearance.
[00:37:37] So Yondu was a centurion in the comic books. He wielded a bow and arrow and he had a big ol' mohawk which Yondu's appearance in this is very modified from that version of Yondu. He's blue.
[00:37:52] He doesn't have quite the large mohawk that he had in the comics and he uses this whistling remote control arrow instead of a bow and arrow here which is kind of cool. I guess you can only have so many bow and arrow guys.
[00:38:06] So from there we cut to the dark aster which is a crea worship captain by... Sorry, if you guys catch me laughing David writes our notes and sometimes he includes fun little things like this one. Captain by all around Chill Guy. Road in the accuser.
[00:38:30] We see him awakening and waking up in a pool of his enemies blood which apparently he sleeps in so he literally sleeps in a cocoon of his enemies blood which is interesting. I didn't notice that on rewatch.
[00:38:46] I probably was aware of it all before but I was like, wow this guy is dark. He's so happy. Yeah. So he's getting suited up and he gives him monologue to a captured zendarion. They call me a terrorist. Oh, the radical.
[00:39:07] Sorry, I slipped a little bit into my entry in there for a second. You did. They call me a terrorist or radical, a zealot because I obey the agent laws of my people. The crey and punish those who do not.
[00:39:22] Uh, Ronan seeks revenge on the Nova Empire for the deaths of his father and grandfather and great grandfather in the thousand year war between the Nova and the crey empire. Uh, even though they ended the war with a peace treaty fairly recently in the movie timeline.
[00:39:42] Ronan crushes the skull of his zendarion prisoner whose blood flows into the same underground fat which from which Ronan emerged. So definitely not an all around chill guy. Not a chill guy. No.
[00:40:01] Um, core aath reports that he failed to retrieve the orb and that it's in the hands of Peter. Ronan wants the orb so he can trade it to Thanos and exchange for Thanos destroying zandar which is the capital of the Nova Empire.
[00:40:17] Ronan initially plans to send Thanos' daughter nebula after Peter but her sister Gamora volunteers and Ronan. Sense her instead because she knows zandar. Run says you will not fail. More says have I ever?
[00:40:40] On the planet zandar we hear a bounty hunter named Rocket Raccoon who is scanning the area and the red and making fun of the locals. He calls them a bunch of losers. Including our class a prevert. Stanley Stanley.
[00:41:03] I have it early on when he's called my little child little guard while I was like, wow this is. I like this character immediately. Yeah he's he's pretty fun.
[00:41:14] So we see Peter he's taking the orb to the broker and asks him what it is and tells him that Ronan is after it too once he once.
[00:41:26] The broker hears Ronan's name he's like nope I'm done by and kick Peter out of the shop outside Gamora ambushes Peter and tries to retrieve the orb for herself as they fight their ambush also by Rocket and Groot.
[00:41:45] After a drawn out fight the four of them are arrested by Roman day of the norm Nova core who calls. The lord star prince. I know this guy he's got it what does he say he's got a codename codename star lord. Our lord.
[00:42:10] They're then processed and thrown in the kill and which is a prisoner for criminals throughout the galaxy. So that processing scene is really fun and also shock full of like cameo detail and all kinds of crazy stuff.
[00:42:30] You could you could do half a podcast just on the processing scene and another half on the collectors place later on. Yeah, truly truly. Yeah, a couple things to call out on the processing scene you do see group.
[00:42:47] They they can form that he's florical osis which is his species. Most of this is actually very comic accurate most of the processing scene you also do see. You see Rocket and his.
[00:43:06] His subject designation which will come back in a future movie you also see his association with lila who at the time was his significant other in the comics. She'll also come back in the later movie.
[00:43:21] I'm trying to think if there were any other standouts. I mean, obviously Peter Quill's machine that he didn't know how it worked and. And so being his middle fingers which he improved.
[00:43:34] And you see a you see a very cut Chris Pratt as well. You don't see the Chris Pratt of parks and wrecks. So that was exciting to see superhero who didn't look like what. He did in parks and wrecks.
[00:43:52] Yeah, we get a I think that's the it all a little bit later seen but they're getting spray tanned and we get to see his cut. Cuts abs and everything. Yeah, they have the silkwood moment where they get splash down which what looks like tomato juice.
[00:44:08] I think I remember reading somewhere he prepared. I think six months for the role and and.
[00:44:16] Described it was very challenging here to drink an ounce of water for every pound he weighed and he just talks about just peeing all the time, but but I had fake if I if I were him and I you know made that sacrifice for six months.
[00:44:30] I'm absolutely popping off my shirt like. Yeah, yeah. I work. I work my butt off for this. I'm going to make sure everybody sees it because afterwards I'm going to go back to eating cheese sticks again. Oh, completely. All right, David, you want to see him there.
[00:44:50] Yeah, we get to so so. So I'm saying are the one thing I do want to touch based on Zandar it is it is kind of principally based on Singapore.
[00:45:00] So think very clean very orderly very strict and zero tolerance if you will for crime and so that's you know they come up with this kind of barbaric kill which is kind of ironic but.
[00:45:12] As they enter the kill rocket already has plans I've escaped 22 prisons there's no one there's no one different and this one's no different and and quail then inquires about the or but go more shoots him down.
[00:45:25] Quote, I have no words for an honorless thief so you know not great chemistry early on. Quail is walking through the kiln he sees a guard wearing his headphones and demands he takes him off.
[00:45:37] Quil gets zapped by a stun rod buddy persists he quote hooked in a feeling blue sweet 1973 that song belongs to me. He and then pretty much everyone in the kiln wants to kill more because of relationship with Ronin today.
[00:45:51] I mean because her relationship with Ronin because she's the daughter of Thanos but she is not phased she says quote whatever nightmares.
[00:46:00] The future holds our but dreams compared to what's behind me which on rewatch really struck me this is very kind of deep and knowing more about her character like oh that actually kind of makes sense. Yeah.
[00:46:12] One of the things I'd point out at the beginning when he's you know he isn't quill isn't quarrying about the or we says it's got a real shiny blue suitcase arc of the covenant mouth he mouthy's a multi spalkan feel and it's obviously references to.
[00:46:27] British last dark multi spalkan and the shiny blue suitcase is the big empty which. John Fevrow is in to. Yeah it's also it's also kind of funny because the the scene where he's getting the orb is very much.
[00:46:42] Indian like very much Indian adjoin swapping out the idle for the bag like it feels almost identical to that. I'm not seeing it but thank you.
[00:46:53] So that's the guy who wanted to call off our feed to do as the review of Indian adjoins you remind me that I'm still been all due to that anyway.
[00:47:05] So one of the one of the prisoners threatens quill when crude intervenes and this you know huge monster and grew just shoved to wood tentacles up his nose and I'm guessing into his brain.
[00:47:19] And then drops him for rocket sets the other inmates straight to say let's get something clear this one is our booty you want to go to him you want to get to him you got to go through us or more accurately we go through you and so one of the inmates tracks.
[00:47:37] Do you catch who played the blue the big blue inmate that that group murks with his uh tendrils who is it again. So the voice is Nathan Philly. Oh that's right that's true.
[00:47:51] We'll also he he cameyos as different characters every single time but he's in all three guardians movies with different cameyos. Very fun. That's why can't I why can't we get that kid. Like.
[00:48:07] I'm gonna get get to be good friends with an actor again or with a director I guess.
[00:48:12] Okay, I mean honestly like they didn't need Vin Diesel to be the one to say I am crude it could have been anybody and I went back going and I could it I could I can memorize those lines.
[00:48:25] He and evidently recorded it thousands of times with different intonations and I can only imagine. And I did most of the languages too.
[00:48:34] Yeah he did yeah he did he uh but can you imagine like the the person that has to save all those sound files and how you name them naming them like excited I am rude sad I am rude sad I am rude like.
[00:48:51] So yeah like it's like okay now I need you to do it with a little bit more emphasis on the eye okay you know so yeah I must have. And I'm not a fun and James going to say no that's the wrong one come back to the files.
[00:49:06] Dude can you look for it anyway one of one of the inmates we see we see Dracks a destroyer. Dip a Tista has a vendetta against Gamora because Ronan killed his wife Overt and his daughter.
[00:49:19] So he wants to vent them by taking the life of one of Ronan's associates in return. Gamora easily disarms her can't captors and explains that she's not related to Ronan and she was planning a double crossing him.
[00:49:31] And he's just as Dracks threatens to kill Gamora Peter intervenes in what kind of humorous scenes he. Cool says she betrayed Ronan he's coming for her that's when you and he draws his finger across his throat.
[00:49:46] And and and Dip a Tista who I thought did a really good job as Dracks as is very kind of. Monatone not out non ironic everything is literally like why would I want to put my throat in his why why would I put my finger in his throat.
[00:49:59] No no that's the symbol for slicing his throat.
[00:50:03] I would not slice his throat I would cut his head clean off it's a general expression for you killing someone you've heard of this do you've seen this right you know what this is any he motions to the one guy and nods and then he tracks looks at him and then he kind of shakes his head.
[00:50:17] We cut to Ronan who's been some of my Thanos to his domain called the sanctuary. Ronan reports to Thanos that Gamora is a trader and berate some for not taking her betrayal seriously when the other school's run and for disrespecting Thanos.
[00:50:32] Ronan angrily breaks his neck kills him and forces Thanos to speak to him and directly Thanos reprimands Ronan for his tone and for alienating his favorite daughter Gamora. With Nebula standing right there Thanos then tell Ronan that thanks dad.
[00:50:47] Ronan that up funny funny thing is that the carry on who I believe is Australian if I'm not mistaken. British one of the one of the funny talkers anyway, she.
[00:51:03] She they they wanted to get an accent for her and so she you oh she's got a shit corrected. But they didn't like it and so James going to just kill him create a mix between Clint Eastwood and Marilyn Monroe.
[00:51:19] Which I thought was kind of funny which in certain things are like oh it is Clint Eastwood I got it now.
[00:51:26] And Thanos tells Ronan that he will honor their agreement and if Ronan brings him to the orb meaning that he will destroy his and our for him otherwise he threatens to quote.
[00:51:35] The star ways in your blood if he doesn't so super chill dude number two we see the movie back in the kill. Gamora has a plan to sell the orb to another interested party which I don't know if we ever know who that is.
[00:51:51] I'm not I don't think we do and Peter rock and grew to greet help and split the reward rocket has a plan to escape the prison he needs three things.
[00:51:59] Right the sound guys one of the guards risk devices prisoners prosthetic leg and a battery from a tall column in the prison powers alarm. And as he's explaining it's very important that they take the battery last group of course grabs it and chaos exists.
[00:52:16] alarms go off security drone robots are deployed to maintain order Gamora goes to get a risk device as Peter negotiates for the prisoners leg on rewatch. So funny.
[00:52:29] He's just like wait what you need to play and then Gamora grabs the orb or so she thinks while Peter doubles back to retrieve his walkman and flies through space to meet up with the team on a ship.
[00:52:40] The music playing as he flies off is the Pini colatis on by rooper homes but it is actual title that is called a scape which I did not know. So yeah so they're on them a lot of the guardians are settling in.
[00:52:57] Rob to early point it's not going super smooth they're bickering quite a bit rock is tinkering with weapons. Gamora and Drax are bickering and Gamora tells Peter that his ship is filthy. That's where we get the very famous Jackson Hulk joke.
[00:53:14] It still cracks me up like watch it this time I would like my wife gave me a sideways look because I was just dying.
[00:53:22] It's almost like I don't know how much you guys watch the office but when they did the black light in the hotel and the lights like it's either blood seeming or you're in hopefully you're in.
[00:53:37] Yeah evidently like there are a couple this is one of the scenes that James can report ahead of several other scenes just so this very adult joke would make it through editing I guess there was a point in time where they.
[00:53:52] So I think it was Josh we didn't made the comment about when he found early draft it's kind of like you can you can amp up the humor a little bit more and I think James going to something very something to the effect of.
[00:54:05] Be careful what you wish for and this is one of the jokes that they went in there.
[00:54:08] And even before that the whole the getting the prosthetic leg was just a fun runner the whole time because he's you know negotiating with the guy in the jail cell basically well everybody else is out there fighting and blowing up stuff and whatever and then he finally gets back into the control tower is like I got the leg and he goes I didn't need it.
[00:54:34] I wanted to see if you could get it or not and he was like what but we could have been helping in the actual fight but instead rocket just wanted to just mess with more than one person to.
[00:54:45] To get this thing accomplished so it was it just made it a funnier version of you know a sci-fi movie like you would never have seen something like that in a Star Wars but the fact that they just threw that in there just for.
[00:55:00] Giggles you know just it makes me laugh. I was just awesome. Yeah, I had paid 30,000 credits which I think sounds like a lot of money. They'd be rich at 40,000 for for Peter's bounty.
[00:55:15] I'm hoping it's fake credits. But anyway so Ronan and Gamora are alive on the kill. They're interrogating the guards about these skate prisoners where they're going.
[00:55:26] The guards don't know anything they don't know what they're going the end to cover nothing and Ronan orders them to quote cleanse the prison ship before the Nova Corps can arrive.
[00:55:36] Yondu and Craglin visit the broker and send our and find out that Peter has the orb and Yondu threatens the broker with his arrow and gets that information. You know I'm realizing now as because we've been talking about this.
[00:55:53] I think this movie is kind of a little bit of a non-secreter but I was like why do I know that Karen Gillie why do I know so well that Karen Gillian is Scottish it's because I'm better.
[00:56:05] I've met her I've met also Nathan Philly in formerly referenced in this movie. I think I this is the movie cast that I might know like I might have met the most of them.
[00:56:19] I wouldn't say I know them right it was Comic Con and watch their lining got autographs and talk to them for you know 30 seconds or whatever but yeah, I think this one might be the one that I know the most. Very cool get them on the podcast.
[00:56:35] What are you doing? Yeah right why I mean Rob on this get Karen Gillian get. So yeah from there we cut over to the collector who is on nowhere just space station built from the severed head of a celestial
[00:56:54] who tells Karina to prepare for their guests the guardians arrive at nowhere to meet with the collector while they wait for their appointment tracks. Rocket and group get drunk and gamble.
[00:57:09] Fun little soundtrack note here is moon age daydream by David Bowie is playing has kind of nonsensical lyrics really kind of captures the silliness and the insanity of of nowhere.
[00:57:25] And also if you want to know more about David Bowie our buddies Eric and Dan from the Supreme Resort and scraping the ball are starting their own podcast I think actually by the time you are hearing this because this should drop on November 5th I want to say is the date or something like that six whatever that Tuesday is.
[00:57:50] You should be able to find in your pod catchers Bowie's explaining which is a podcast where Dan who is a.
[00:58:00] Very big David Bowie fan and very involved in the fan community of David Bowie explains Bowie to Eric who has not listened too much so pretty I'm really looking forward to that one and sounds like it you know kind of fits in.
[00:58:19] You know kind of fits in here since we're talking about Bowie. Yeah, should be fun and also 35 years of hub crawl so that's true. They really know each other. Congrats, Jens. So from from there.
[00:58:34] So we have everybody getting drunk gambling that sort of stuff we see Peter and Gamora standing in the eye of the celestial she tells him that Thanos killed her family and turned her into a weapon.
[00:58:48] She asks why Peter went back to retrieve his walk in and they bond over Peter's music. He explains that his mom made him a mix tape of her favorite songs she listens and likes it. He asks her to dance but she doesn't trust him.
[00:59:06] I am not some starry. I'd wait here to succumb to your pelvic sorcery. She says. I love that line so much. Okay, let me ask you this. Do you think obviously we've established its star alert? A little bit of a of a lady's man.
[00:59:26] Just a little bit just a little bit. Do you think this is go to move like he do you think he's just kind of playing music?
[00:59:33] Yeah, he's just like hey, Barit, check out the mix tape my dead mom made for me years ago put on my childhood shirt. Is this like
[00:59:45] That is that's like it's some like almost pick up artists level moves like oh man just trying to get his be quit right. David, why do you have to say it?
[01:00:00] I did as a romantic note. I think I read somewhere that this is the first Marra movie that did not feature an actual kiss and I was trying to remember them in the priorities.
[01:00:11] I don't want to say that as an actual fact because I'd have to go back and think about some of the priorities but Yeah, that's probably true. Yeah, without spending too much time thinking back on a I can quickly think of one for most of them.
[01:00:28] Yeah, so yeah, that's interesting. We also do in this exchange get a fun little exchange where like Peter's talking about an old fable from his home about people with sticks up their butts and Gamora asks why people had sticks up their butts
[01:00:46] and who put them there and it turns out they're talking about foot loose, which is clearly a fable from our time. It's a fable. I love that it's a movie that is now turned into a fable.
[01:00:59] And this is also where the affection for Kevin Bacon begins which will come back several times over throughout Star Lords chain in the MCU. So well, tracks rocket and group are getting drunk. They get into a big ol' fight.
[01:01:22] Dracks thinks group is dumb. Rock it is tired of people calling him a rodent. Rocket goes, well, I didn't ask to get made. I didn't ask it torn apart put back together over and over and turned into some little monster.
[01:01:40] Quil goes, rocket no one's calling you a monster. Rocket said says, he called me Vernon. Verman, she called me a rodent. Let's see if you can laugh after five or six good shots to your freaking face.
[01:01:55] This was very um this for me was like another kind of poignant moment. Even though it's stayed in a kind of humorous way like the part where he talks about being pulled apart and put back together and he's seen later on in the movie.
[01:02:10] Like he's you know, and other movies too. Very like this very kind of emotionally scarring event which added a lot of complexity to what is a CGI talking about. Yeah, I think rocket rocket is one of those unique characters in that he is very funny.
[01:02:31] Right. He has some really solid humor pieces. But he's also got a very rich, very dark like backstory to him which will explore more in future movies.
[01:02:45] But it is it's kind of that like laughing to cope with the with the trauma and it's interesting to see that for sure. So from here Peter reminds Reminds rocket of the 4 billion credits and you know, talks, talks, rock it out of fighting.
[01:03:15] The collectors assistant fetches them and they all go to meet him except for Drax who is off on his own. So then we introduce, we get to see Tannolier to Valiant. Also known as the collector who has a giant assortment of collectibles from all over the galaxy.
[01:03:38] He's got Howard the duck. He's got Cosmo the the Soviet space dog. He's got a sleeping dark elf. He's got the bugs from slither, which is one of James guns earlier movies.
[01:03:55] He's got supposedly Adam Warlocks cocoon, which then ended up getting rekt conned out of not being Adam Warlocks cocoon. If you extend the collector's collection to what he has here on earth now that we've seen him in California at
[01:04:15] Disney California Adventure he's also got Howard the yeah Howard the Yeti he's got Figment the dragon he's got all kinds of stuff right the collector has quite the collection. Is that ride cannon? Yeah, well, well it's pocket universe cannon.
[01:04:39] Yeah, because that's the whole like story of Avengers campuses that it's not 616 it's not 1 9 9 9 9 9 It's it's own interesting and I answered my earlier question. Of course, the good mar was going to go to the collector who's going to pay them the 4 billion credits.
[01:05:01] I on rewatch this is one of the ones. This is kind of like that the scene from Thor Dark World where The character's name where he's he's diagramming and he's got his chalkboard with all the stuff.
[01:05:17] Oh yeah, and this was the moment where I just wanted to like zoom in and just see everything and it's could not to couldn't do it on my TV unfortunately. But a lot of a lot of really great things in the background.
[01:05:28] Yeah, so the collector puts the orb into a lathe which unscrews it and opens it up to ease feel and infinity stone. The collector explains that the infinity stones are 6 singularities created during the big bang.
[01:05:53] They can be used to wipe out entire civilizations and can only be will wielded by beings of extraordinary strength. During this explanation, we actually do get to see that basically confirmation that the ether is a infinity stone.
[01:06:12] We've already seen that the test or act is an infinity stone. I think we also see low key staff at memory serves and so that again confirms that we have infinity stones in those places.
[01:06:26] We also do see a depiction of the creation of the infinity stones and there are four, I guess I'd call them deities that are creating the infinity stones in the comics these deities would be lady death.
[01:06:45] Who Thanos is actually trying to woo in the comics during the infinity war and that's spoiler alert for down the line one of Thanos' big things is killing a bunch of people and part of why he wants to kill a bunch of people is to woo lady death in the comics.
[01:07:05] Also eternity. I went into this being so bold and so ready and now I'm dropping. We do see eternity later on in the MCU. I think it's infinity and I forget who the fourth one is. We're already.
[01:07:26] Weird flex to want to kill a bunch of people just to get some of the attention. Dude. Lady death has the weirdest suitors because because at one point deadpool is also courting her and and it ends up getting really dark in the comics because he's like.
[01:07:42] I can't die so I can't be with you and that was real interesting. The the orb of the contains what we know note to be the power stone and the collector talks about the group that maintain them and in the comic books.
[01:07:58] And we don't ask for the title but some people think that the character's a member of the infinity watch and each member of the watch would protect one of the stones, so add a more like protected the soul stone.
[01:08:06] Good morning protect the timestone moon dragon the mind stone. Pipped the troll had the space stone, Drax had the power stone and Thanos had the reality stone revealed as a secret guardian in the infinity crusade. who the other one is and because I have to redeem myself here.
[01:08:27] It's entropy. Entropy is the fourth deity. I'm telling you that MCU trivia nightmare, we're gonna crush this. Oh, truly, truly. We also see during this kind of slideshow of the M.C. or of the infinity stones, we also do see that S in the searcher is a celestial.
[01:08:53] He actually appeared in a turnl number nine in 1977. He is wielding its purple. So we're gonna assume it's the power stone. He is wielding the power stone and destroys a whole planet. Another interesting variation from the comics that happened here,
[01:09:12] which my, so my understanding is James Gunn was given two directives from Marvel for this movie. You have to introduce Thanos. We don't care how you do it, but you have to introduce Thanos and you have to introduce the power stone.
[01:09:27] Again, we don't care how you do either one of those things, but you have to do it. In the comic books, the power stone is the red stone, but because Marvel had already established a red, Jello blob that they wanted to use as an infinity stone,
[01:09:46] they had to change the last minute and go purple for the power stone here. Did you say Jello putting? Yeah, Jello put in pops. Okay, I won't do it. I'm a clock with a stop, a stop. Yeah, this is on rewatch. This is definitely,
[01:10:05] there are a lot of nuggets in the air. And this is definitely the scene where I, I spent more time rewinding and playing it back. This is the type of scene that our podcast is built for.
[01:10:15] Like, like I think this is the type of scene that I enjoy the most. And I, I love on these rewatches and seeing how it got reused. Seeing the new things I noticed because of like context that I now have. This is what we built this for.
[01:10:35] Me being a non comic reader when it was first introduced, I'm just like, okay, whatever if Thanos is the bad guy, the purple stone blah, blah, blah, blah. But then, you know, watching the rest of the MCU movies and then going back and rewatching this,
[01:10:49] you're like, oh, like, this is the big. Like if they could only have stopped him now, you know, like, so many things could not have happened in the future, you know? And I was like, oh, so it was fun for me, like going back and going,
[01:11:04] wait, this is the intro. I know who Thanos is now. Like now he's not just the bad guy. I know who he is, you know? And I think probably for the majority of the millions of people who have watched the movies,
[01:11:16] they're all in the same boat as I am or you're like, oh, oh. So truly, truly. Yeah. I am. By the way, it's a professor, Selvig, which popped my head from Thor Dark World, who had the Blackboard with all the cool notes on it. Yeah.
[01:11:32] The, I also, I, when I didn't remember, but I saw on rewatch, I was funny, when he sees group and he's just like, what are you tall, like, can I buy your body after you are dead? So yeah. And yet he's got so many alive creatures in there.
[01:11:53] He's just, yeah. And well, what's so cool is like, Flora Colossus has like a quite a large kind of comic book background and group is like one of, I think, four or five Flora Colossus's Colossus. So he's like, all that's left of his species, right?
[01:12:16] And there, and so there is, there is kind of a cool backstory in the comics there where it definitely would make sense that the collector would want him at that point. Yeah. You could, you can imagine that you can imagine the character just, short segue.
[01:12:37] You can imagine the character being, I want to have everything. It's like, I want to have every, oh, I see something I don't have. It's like, oh, it's like, if you're a comic book collector and you're missing one of the runs, you're like, I have to get this.
[01:12:49] Like, I can't, I can't have to complete the set. Absolutely. So yeah, after the kind of slideshow on the, on the infinity stones, we do see, uh, Karina the collector's assistant trying to grab the stone. This creates an explosion, it overpowers her, it explodes.
[01:13:11] It kind of destroys the collection and in the chaos, Peter and the others escape with the orb, uh, carrying the infinity stone. Rocket just wants, wants to just give it to Ronin be done with it. Gamora wants to give it to Nova and Pierre wants to sell it.
[01:13:35] They decide the safest thing to do is to store the stone, uh, on Zandar with the Nova core. Yeah, this is part of my earlier confusion as to who she wanted to sell it to obviously was the collector.
[01:13:48] But it, uh, on rewatch, it was kind of odd to me that she's kind of quickly shifted gears. Um, and saying, no, we have to safely store it with the Nova core out of the house. She knows that it will be safe with the Nova core.
[01:14:01] But I think she knows it can't go to the collector and it cannot go to Ronin under 80 circumstances. Do you think that switches because she didn't know it had the stone in it before?
[01:14:10] She just originally, she just knew this was an orb that looked that was worth a lot of money. Do you think she knew that it had the stone in it or, or did Ronin maybe keep that from her?
[01:14:22] I think based on future films that she and, um, Thanos and. Nebula both young both both versions of, uh, Nebula, they know that. Yeah. And so again, why I think maybe as I've really think about the scene.
[01:14:43] Um, where she's trying to get people to like, you know, get all foreign board and they're going to sell it. She tells them I'm going to sell the orb. Maybe that was just your way to kind of convince them to get together. And then we can with them.
[01:14:53] Yeah, just to kind of unite the group makes sense. Um, suddenly the group is ambushed by Ronin and his crew responding to Drax's call. Yondu's ravager put tune also shows up having tracked Peter down from the broker. Uh, Gamora rocket and Quill take off in single passenger ships.
[01:15:17] Well, Nebula and some of Ronin's group. Goons chase after them. A drunken Drax. That's an easy one to say drunken Drax. Uh, drunken Drax tries to fight Ronin and, but gets completely worked over. Uh, Nebula chases Gamora ship down.
[01:15:38] Um, above the atmosphere and blows it up Nebula manages to seize the infinity stone. Um, and leaves Gamora floating in space to die. Peter realizes that he can't allow Gamora to die.
[01:15:50] So we calls John do to tell him where he is exits his ship floats to Gamora where he takes off his sleep mask. Um, to keep her alive and then he dies in the vacuum of space and we roll credits. Uh, no, I'm just kind of in somehow.
[01:16:09] Uh, keeps himself alive very much just like the way that Leia kept herself alive floating outside the spaceship and Star Wars. Uh, and Yondu picks them both up. That's not much of a that's that's a risky plan right there. You're. You're. It also would not actually have worked.
[01:16:33] Right. Like in seconds he would have been for a well, maybe maybe I think something because what we find out in the second movie. Yeah. Um, but he doesn't know that. Yeah. Yet so why.
[01:16:51] I mean, unless he's been out in space before and has realized like, hey, I don't freeze right away. I'll be able to do this. Maybe one of his other lady friends kicked him out of his ship or something like that.
[01:17:05] I mean, but uh, it was for love Rob. It was for love. So he it was very a very risky move on his behalf because if you don't know what your father was or anything,
[01:17:23] you don't know that you're going to survive out there very long and I don't know. And even just putting him has to go over her, I don't think would protect our whole body. The rest of our body would have been so sure.
[01:17:36] But meanwhile back on nowhere, uh, Ruth has group resuscitates an unconscious drags. And then rocket schooled strax for contacting Ronin and nearly getting them all killed. Um, well, telling dracks to get over his grief. Rocket says boo hoo my wife and child are dead. Everybody's got dead people.
[01:18:02] It's no excuse to get everybody else dead along the way. Rocket and group decide to join forces. And save Peter and Gamora from Yondu. I uh, on rewatch the reaction where he says, oh, boo hoo my wife and child are dead and
[01:18:21] group looks turns his face and looks to be gasping like, oh my god, what did you just say? Uh, but I thought again, another kind of really kind of poignant moment that could have turned quite a bit for him. Right.
[01:18:40] But, uh, really I did kind of enjoy that scene and you do start to see the The formation of the relationships if you will the the self sacrifice that Quill, um, you know, risks his own life to save Gamora and, you know, group saving Drax's life.
[01:19:02] You see them now starting to kind of kind of congeal and get on the same page. And even like the rocket statement is great because rocket has a horrible backstory also, but he's not, you know, depressed not that he's not depressed about it.
[01:19:19] But he's not, you know, like, following and it's wallowing. Like he's like, look, you know, and it was rewatching it was great. I was like, oh, like from somebody who
[01:19:32] Maybe isn't that good or frenzy at you can get away with saying that to somebody, but if you're like, really good friends with me, oh, I know I'm so sorry.
[01:19:41] You know, it's so sad that you lost your wife and daughter, but for someone who's a little bit more Rough around the edges and not as close, you're going to be more blunt with them. And then the way rocket was way more blunt. Like that's cool.
[01:19:53] I'm sorry for you, but you can't kill all of us. Peas your upset rockets rockets in New Yorker, right? Yes. So we, we board the, we board the dark aster, Ron and Telthanos that now that he has the infinity stone.
[01:20:14] He no longer needs Thanos and break their agreement. He puts the infinity stone in his war hammer and tells Thanos that he will destroy his end or himself. And then he will come for Thanos next.
[01:20:27] We cut to Peter, Gamora on Yondu ship where he threatens to kill Peter with his arrow for double crossing him and Peter in a very kind of Princess Leia kind of moment
[01:20:39] Tonsolo says, you kill me now and you're saying goodbye to you the biggest score you've ever seen. And so they make up Peter and Gamark events that Ron and his vulnerable Peter has a plan
[01:20:51] to get the or back, Ron and welcome to Peter back with open arms is just the other thing I really enjoyed watching was like just the really kind of dysfunctional relationship between the ravagers and Peter and all the time we're like, they want each boy that never
[01:21:06] takes tearing before like all that just like and then there it's just I don't know. I really enjoy that. I love I love when I Quill was like who eats people like stop.
[01:21:18] So good and so good we, um they rocket group drags fly the monotion to ship and threatened to blow it up with a special weapon that rocket built unless Yondu releases Peter and Gamora.
[01:21:34] Peter merges from the crowd the last second tells him to back down I do I love how rocket is extremely smart and can build machines and weaponry in like seconds. And yet he doesn't know that if I blow up the ship then they're going to die life
[01:21:54] does plan. So now that they're back on they're all on the on the Milano, they're bickering yet again. Gamora says that they have to treat the infinity stone from Ron and in order to state
[01:22:08] Xandar and Peter says he has a plan to stop Ron and rocket questions whether Peter really has a plan and drag asks what percentage of a plan he has which leads to I think maybe my favorite interaction in the movie and cool goes.
[01:22:23] I don't know 12% rock it's like 12% starts laughing. It's like that's fake laughs. It's real totally fake. That is the most real authentic hysterical laugh of my entire life because that is not a plan. And Gamora is like it's barely a concept in here.
[01:22:41] So here taking their side and grutes is I am grute and rock it says so what it's better than 11% what what what the hell does that have to do with anything and Peter's like
[01:22:51] thank you, grute thank you see grutes the only one of you who has a clue as then grutes like eating like a leaf from its from his shoulder and I just that was just
[01:23:03] I don't know that for me kind of captured the functional dysfunctional kind of you know really cohesive relationship that they have and I just I love that same so much. Yeah, I also thought it was funny I was doing some research about this and for eagle
[01:23:21] eyed viewers you'll catch that 12% is the same percentage of credit that Tony Stark gives pepper for Stark tower and somebody like tweeted at James gun and he's really an interactive on Twitter sometimes to his own detriment.
[01:23:35] So I spoiler he he somebody tweeted at him was like is this reference he's like no it's just like a commonly used funny percentage like 12 is just a funny number to say right because it's not like 15% is like a more of a common number than a 12 would be
[01:23:55] like right you never say I'm 12 minutes away you're either like I'm 10 minutes away or I'm 15 minutes away so a 12 is a definitely a funny number and that whole scene just cracked me up because if you put it into Star Wars perspective if Quill is Han Solo
[01:24:12] you know if he says I have a plan people just go okay and you don't have everybody who's with him questioning what your plan is and then what percentages it and stuff and then with that drags being so serious he was like you know so the whole
[01:24:28] collection and that scene like he said made me laugh so much as well. Yeah it's great the Peter reminds them that they're all you know calls them losers like you're trying to like inspire people but tell me how they've all lost
[01:24:44] like homes and families and their normal lives in the today's today that he has been given to them to care Ryan you want to add this out but like basically to give a shit and not stand by
[01:24:57] and that to me was like okay this now kind of makes sense is kind of moral turn I can kind of buy it. Yeah 100% but they are they also realize you know that the odds don't look good
[01:25:15] Yeah you have 12% of a plan but you know what is what would be the percentage of actually going to win. Rocket says but Quill beating Ron and he can't be done you're asking us to die
[01:25:24] and Peter Quill says yes I guess I am and Gamora says Quill I've lived my life most of my life surrounded by my enemies I will be grateful to die among my friends and I was a man a very poignant.
[01:25:36] Tracks says you're an honorable man Quill I will fight beside you and in the end I will see my wife and daughter. Group says his famous line I am group and rock says ah what the hell
[01:25:44] I don't get a let it I don't got that law that life's been anyway stands up because now I'm standing happy we're all standing now bunch of jackasses standing in a circle and it just again you in these
[01:25:57] you know seven eight lines of dialogue you've got humor you've got poignant C you have you have communicated like you have that you have this kind of noble turn when it saved this planet. I just I really this again these these scenes are probably high up on rewatches
[01:26:14] my favorite ones. Yeah for sure. So Quill warns y'all do screw that Ron and can destroy every living thing on the planet simply by touching the infinity stone and the plain service so they need to prevent him from reaching Xandar in the first place.
[01:26:31] So Peter and Gamora lay out this crazy like oceans 11 like plan to board the dark aster retrieved infinity stone and I don't know where they got it but they put together some wild like space powerpoint presentation where like you went from having 12% of a plant actually having slides
[01:26:53] which to me I thought was kind of wild. They they also put it in warns the Nova Cor that Ron and his coming to destroy them and they should get ready he tells him that they just escaped prison
[01:27:04] so there's no reason to risk coming back to Xandar he's also quote not 100% a dick. In the in the in the exchange he ran a day and Roman day and Nova probably says look he said that he may be quote an a whole but he's not that
[01:27:20] and I'm quoting here 100% a dick. Nova and Nova probably he's in Glen close like right actors you just like Jesus is like oh man my grandkids are better love this movie because I look like he said and she says do you believe him
[01:27:37] and then uh John C. Riley whom I love well I don't know if I believe anyone is 100% a dick man and I mean do you believe he's here to help and he says
[01:27:48] yeah and so now the Nova Cor are on and they start the plan and this is you know we'll kind of cut through the action pretty quickly but the guard is make their way to
[01:28:02] the dark aster rocker blows a hole in the ship and that and then Yandone is men defend and Argan's Ronan's fighter ships amidst the fight Yandue gets shot down but the Nova Cor reinforcements arrive Peter exclaims happily they got my dick
[01:28:15] message so so dumb and then we just we cut through a bunch of action scenes Peter manages to fly and start inside the dark aster shooting secarant forces before coming to halt. Drax just looks like he just got off the incredible star he just looks like so happy.
[01:28:35] The dozens of Nova pilots linked together to form a giant blockade net to prevent the descent of the aster dark aster I don't know why the dark aster couldn't just drive around the net but we'll put that aside on Xandar Yandue is cornered by a bunch
[01:28:49] of the current soldiers and a neocraft in the order to turn on the Nova Cor and set it uses as arrow to kill the entire platyne once which I thought was of even though it was awesome so cool so cool so very cool.
[01:29:01] I did not know what the arrow did before the movie and seeing an action I was like that's pretty dope I'm not gonna lie. Drax Peter and Groot head to the bridge to the ship fighting a bunch of soldiers
[01:29:15] along the way almost to the bridge Drax kills Coref grew in a famous scene extends along Branch in thrashes a large number of Ronan's men and smiles and being you know what good word like he were Ronan then uses the power stone to
[01:29:33] destroy the Nova Cor blockade killing numerous fighter pilots. And we see Gamora fight in Nebula she falls Nebula she let Nebula fall lands on a ravage ship. Commoders at throwing its pilot and flying away and eventually the
[01:29:47] four of them make it to the bridge Peter shoots Ronan with rockets headron and force and Ronan dies and the movie ends at that moment. No he's still alive and he blasts the guard into the power stone he's about to
[01:29:59] kill Drax when rocket crashes the mono into the bridge killing Ronan. Finally the entire ship is plummeting down to Zandar and so Groot forms kind of a giant cocoon around them using his body for their safety rockets upset because he knows that Groot is going to what
[01:30:20] is doing is we'll end up killing him and then Groot response by saying we are Groot. Teardurk man. So good. One of the win, win Gamora and Nebula are fighting. The wave Nebula gets out of the fight and falls down to to the
[01:30:40] necro craft that's below and you know, commentators it. I guess it was a ravage ship. But the way she does that is she cuts off her own left hand which is a phase two reference that's in every phase two movie somebody
[01:31:02] loses a left hand and that is a reference to Empire Shrek's back. I was going to say to Star Wars. Yep. Never saw it. Never saw it. No, not familiar. No, no. Do you see movie? No, no. Watch out of those. It's worth a buck Rogers. Yeah.
[01:31:23] Good stuff. Yeah. A little flash court. Action. I love it. In my mind, I was thinking the same thing and in my mind I wanted to sing it but I said, you know, I don't have the range. I'm not going to do that. You're welcome.
[01:31:42] You know, I'm a rocky Ryan's right. No, hold my beer. I'm going for it. I remember seeing that movie on HBO when I was a kid and I was so confused.
[01:31:56] I was waiting for the flash to show up and I was just, when is he going to start running fast? I was so confused. That was not at all. I was expecting. But yeah. Very different. Very different. Yeah.
[01:32:11] Well, the ship crashes and group is reduced to a bunch of twigs. But the battle is not over because Ronan is still alive. He's our castically calls Peter and his crew. The Guardians of the Galaxy. Hey, they said the movie is named Ronan Threatens.
[01:32:30] Liz Andarians and raises his hammer for a final blow. This is Quill stands up to dance to the song. Oh, child. And challenges Ronan to a dance off. Ronan is confused until Peter reveals it's just one big distraction.
[01:32:49] Rocket reassembles the Hadron enforcer by the way reading that and given my last name. That is a really hard one to read correctly. Which tracks shoots at Ronan's hammer there by releasing the infinity stone.
[01:33:07] Peter grabs the power stone just before Ronan can and actually I thought this was a really cool slow bocine on rewatch. I was like, oh, this is actually really well done like CGI slowmo where they're like reaching for the stone at the same time. Really fun there.
[01:33:26] But Peter starts to be affected in the same way that everybody else who tries to control the stone is where they start to crack and their skin starts to shatter. As I slap my mic. Enjoy that listener. Intel Gamora tells him to take her hand.
[01:33:46] He flashes back to when he didn't have the courage to take his mom's hand.
[01:33:51] So now he grabs Gamora's tracks and rocket link up with the others and the power of the stone spreads among the four of them causing a burst of energy that they used to vaporize Ronan.
[01:34:04] They managed to put the infinity stone in an orb before Yondu appears and demands the stone as per the original deal with Peter. Peter reluctantly hands him the orb and warns him not to open it. As Yondu and his men take off.
[01:34:22] One of them notes that Peter that he likes Peter and he's glad that they didn't take him back to the dad to his dad like they were supposed to all those years ago because his dad is quote a jackass. Peter reveals that he switched the orbs.
[01:34:43] So he still has one with the stone. Peter actually slipped down and do a fake orb and is trolling him with a troll doll. With a troll yes. Much to Yondu's amusement later on rocket cries as he collects one of the twigs that was one screwed.
[01:35:03] At the headquarters of the Nova Corps they turn over the orb that contains the infinity stone and Peter learns that he's only half tearing and half something very ancient and unknown.
[01:35:17] They speculate that he is nonhuman genes allowed him to harness the power of the infinity stone without dying. Nova Prime thinks them for saving Xandar and Roman day presents quill with a new ship and informs them that their criminal records have been expunged.
[01:35:40] But he warns them against breaking any laws in the future. Rocket says question what if I say something. What if I see something that that I want to take and it belongs to somebody else. Well then you'd be arrested.
[01:35:59] But what if I want it more than the person who has it still illegal. That doesn't follow. No, I want more sir. Do you understand? What are you laughing at? Why? Why can't I have a discussion with this gentleman? Dracks.
[01:36:24] What if someone does something orc some and I decide to remove his spine? Roman day. That's actually murder. It's one of the worst crimes, so also illegal. Says Dracks. Bravo. Well then. I like how kind of went from like rocket-ish,
[01:36:49] then it kind of went to like a Philadelphia accent or something. I'm trying to fall. It was great. It was tough. Every podcast is always some accent work through them. Always always always super is from Philly. So it does make sense. There you go. There you go.
[01:37:09] You should have been having you do all the rocket lines. Oh, yeah. Totally. Let's restart for the beginning. 19. No. Peter finally opens up the present that his mother gave him when she died 26 years ago.
[01:37:27] He reads a point you know from his mother in a voice over Meredith says, Peter, I know these last few months have been hard for you, but I'm giving you, but I'm going to a better place and I will be okay. And I will always be with you.
[01:37:43] You are the light of my life, my precious son, my little starboard. Love. I'm not going to lie. The note to me was very touching and poignant until she got the little starboard part. I was like, that's a little on the nose.
[01:37:58] Yeah. It's one of those things where it's like, okay. So did he open this before? That's why he's using this. Is it a plane? He gets the, how did he get the same exact name that she wrote in this random,
[01:38:09] but it's a random thing to say to somebody. Right. Oh. Yeah, what does she give him like a little different name? My little cosmic prince is a guy. I got to change up my entertainment Instagram account. I got to change like. It's my little blog at the,
[01:38:27] people are mad. Now that's his criminal name. People are finally calling me starboard. Now I got to change it to cosmic prince. Geez. Oh, no.
[01:38:38] So a couple things which may be left throughout this one you guys completely skipped over the whole rocket going and I mean that guy's eye. Oh yeah. It was a great call back to 40 minutes before, but I like this time's quill was like, no,
[01:38:56] you don't need his eye. He's like, oh, but he's so funny. No.
[01:39:02] And how many times you could tell that, you know, quill was a swimmer and, you know, a thief and all that stuff because how many times throughout this movie did he switch the ball and, you know,
[01:39:17] it was in the backpack and then she had the backpack, but he was able to get the ball out of the backpack.
[01:39:23] You know, he gives him the one with the troll doll in and instead like he has a collection of these of these metal orbors floating around in his and his statue somewhere or something like that.
[01:39:34] They were all, I will say that they were all at one point in time. I think given orbs the I think they all were in theory carrying one. I mean, there was a scene earlier in the movie where like, okay, if you get it, like,
[01:39:46] unspeakable, the base of one of you guys got it. But yeah, I thought I thought that too. You can just tell me that the very kind of like. Kind of mind me of land out a little bit right. Yeah. Yeah, right.
[01:40:00] Yeah, where he's always got another scheme planning as he's going through with scheme one is got scheme two in this back of his head also. So it was a very fun movie. I loved it a lot.
[01:40:12] I loved, you know, all the comedic parts and everything and, you know, even your read through was was phenomenal. It's still made me laugh and still brought out the all the same feels that I got when I watched the movie. Yeah. So yeah.
[01:40:30] It's the couple things to note in these kind of end scenes, you know, we see, we see Yondu opens and he sees he's got the troll and he's oddly kind of amused. Nova Prime is locking the, if he's thrown in the vault, Roman Day is embracing his family.
[01:40:47] The music ain't no amount high enough by Margae is this message of love from Meredith and she's got the role of Peter but also plays over the relationships that we see have been formed or saved by the Guardians.
[01:41:03] And it's sort of in this way kind of signifies the, I think, gun chose this song because signifies the start of the Guardians is as true, you know, companion group if you will. Yeah.
[01:41:14] I don't know if you picked up on, because I've seen it so many times, but let me see at the end Roman Day with his wife and daughter come into the room, they were the two that they zoomed
[01:41:27] in on earlier when ships were coming down and trying to do it like this. And I think it might have been rocket or somebody flew by and shot it before but there was
[01:41:41] like a whole bunch of people running and you saw this one, I think pink or red, whatever color they were, woman and daughter and they were the same too that that Roman day, they were Roman days wife and daughter.
[01:41:52] So I thought that was a cute little pullback as to why were we focusing on these two people so much in this one second scene here. So who's going to need a look for sure for sure.
[01:42:04] So the movie closes out on actually one of my favorite little bits here where Peter's sitting on the ship of the new bilano, he asks them where they want to go and what they want to do. Do they want to do something good? Something bad?
[01:42:22] Little bits of both. That's where they end up landing is on the mix of both. We also see that rocket is holding a poted plant in his hand and we see the face of baby group open up on the stick which is kind of fun.
[01:42:38] And then cue, I want you back by the Jackson Five as we take off into the galaxy. So and then as we take off into the galaxy we also get to see the, well it's sort of a hit
[01:42:54] and Mickey, there's three sons and they kind of make a Mickey mouse head but they also are the Nova symbol. You can see that that's what inspired Nova's logo is the three sons in there. Yep, system.
[01:43:12] So and then we get to see earlier on something that actually inspired the end of this very podcast. At the end of every podcast I say you know, puny pot will return because at the end of every Marvel movie actually usually after the credits it says,
[01:43:26] whoever the superhero is will return right. This one actually puts it up at the head of the credits and we get to see the guardians of the galaxy will return which is really cool to see.
[01:43:41] And that's, that's pretty bold like I thought they had in mind that they would do a sequel or if they would appear in like kind of you know movie with Thor or whatever but they're just like they're planning the flag like yeah we're going to do this again.
[01:43:58] And I find it very like he's at very aggressive or very risky for any of these because there's been some MCU movies that have not gone over well. So for them to be like with something as outrageous and as different as this one was
[01:44:18] to plan at the end of the first one that we're going to do a second one or something else out of this. If this movie flopped it would be pretty embarrassing for them. It's going to return in just a commercial because it was so bad.
[01:44:34] So they didn't do that after the incredible Hulk. They're like enjoy it when it said at the very end enjoy him while you can see him on screen. That was a goal. Good. Thanks Edward Norton for coming out for this one movie. So that that's the movie.
[01:44:58] Let's see here so I want to start with kind of our main takeaway. I see here in there are notes David you have an extra question which will ask second here but you know coming off the tail into this movie.
[01:45:13] One what's your I guess we'll get to overall thoughts in a second but what's what's the main takeaway of this movie right why was this one Significant within the scope of the MCU. David what do you think?
[01:45:27] I think that they did something that was fairly groundbreaking they created a movie that was Unconnected completely disconnected from Marvel. This could have been under this could have been under the Star Wars umbrella right it could have did not have to be under the created this
[01:45:49] Funny, poignant, exciting like visually we didn't even talk about the different planets now that the amazing they look you know when you watch a When I watch you know Star Wars show like Mandalorian or whatever I know they're on earth but all these places here all looked different.
[01:46:10] And this was the you know I would describe it as they you know Marvel before this the MCU before this strikes me like a startup company and now it is the machine this is the fully formed big.
[01:46:24] Huge very confident very ashore of itself and it is a movie that feels both connected to the MCU but completely disconnected as I said before you can do you can watch this as standalone movie.
[01:46:38] And it's a fantastic and enjoyable thing and it doesn't have to go anywhere else and you don't have to have any background and they pulled it off and so for me that's that is the significance of the movie they have now laid the plan that we can do.
[01:46:52] Almost anything and we have the creatives and we have the system and the casting and the the creatives to make pretty much whatever they want to.
[01:47:03] Yeah, I think same thing like the fact that not one scene of this movie took place on earth there was no pre existing characters in this movie at all and then the fact that they're able to tie in Thanos and bring in Thanos and bring in the infinity.
[01:47:21] And bring in the infinity stones to it even though it's has nothing to do with anybody at all that we've seen before was amazing.
[01:47:29] And like you said it could be a standalone movie you don't need the other movies to know what's going on you don't need to know who that guy is or who that guy was because they're all new guys.
[01:47:41] So I thought it was awesome and just like I said for me, it was definitely one of my favorite MCU movies so stand out for me was just the fact that it was so much fun so funny. But still so much action and everything involved I think.
[01:47:58] Maybe I know that the the MCU movies before this there was a lot of jokes and stuff in it, but I also feel maybe this was like could have been the turning point where they really said okay this whole big comedic.
[01:48:11] And this comedic superhero thing can make us different than DC or Star Wars or anything else. Let's let's lean more into the comedy end of it as well because they really leaned into it a lot with this one.
[01:48:26] And then and it basically recessed it's the Thor character my mind. Yeah, yeah it really does and that was you know I was going to say it introduced the galactic side of the MCU Ray Lake realistically from here on out you have.
[01:48:42] All the things in outer space and you have all the things happening on earth that won't meet again until we get back to infinity war there's kind of two threads happening in the MCU to parallel threads that that run side by side.
[01:49:01] And so it introduced kind of that that that dual thread structure where you have outer outer space and you have grounded grounded right or things in quotes.
[01:49:13] So that that was really cool and I think it it I would say this is where the MCU leveled up right like so we we started with phase one.
[01:49:23] And phase one was your basic Avengers hey let's this is proof of concept right here's here's your basic superhero archetypes let's put them together let's make a motif that's phase one phase two is let's start taking some risks right and some of those risks paid off some of those risks didn't or dark world.
[01:49:45] And and then.
[01:49:49] You get into the phase three which is hey now that those risks have paid off or not right now we have these cool kind of things where where we can have two halves and we can tell more stories and you don't have to ask the question of hey why weren't the guardians of the galaxy on terror.
[01:50:07] And so you know upcoming we've got age of old tron coming up why didn't the guardians of the galaxy show up to in the age of old tron it's because they were often space they didn't know anything about what was going on and so it kind of created a really cool avenue where.
[01:50:25] the tell more unique stories and and. You know some would say maybe it led to the to the content overload we have today that you know maybe that's taking it too far but. I think it did create kind of a cool.
[01:50:45] Opportunity for the MCU and the way that they tell stories yeah, Faggy Faggy has said that this movie basically. Validated the fact that I think you use the term like.
[01:50:56] Validates are most esoteric interests and how far they would be willing to go along with us and in bolden them to. And you know obviously with the phase two and the phases after that to kind of tell these kind of different stories some work really well.
[01:51:11] Causes have been a little kind of clunkers if you will. Um. Rob denging your said and this is a quote one of my favorite quotes he says. Um. Galaxie is in some ways the best Marvel movie ever.
[01:51:25] And it continues and it's odd for someone with on occasion and ego the size of mine to actually say that. So. And in a way I kind of agree it's it's. Um, I. I it's hard to describe like. How.
[01:51:45] It's harder described like how much of a swing this was and we've talked about a little bit like and and and how are they completely landed it and.
[01:51:52] Yeah, so much so that they made two more movies and a holiday special which if you think of like it just think of the holiday special. What a ludicrous notion this is and yeah. It works really well. It was great. It does. Yeah.
[01:52:07] And somewhere around here I have that or I just remember that I. So they they released special editions of phase one and phase two. I.
[01:52:16] One of my eternal regrets from phase one is I didn't buy the briefcase with the tassar act and all the phase one movies and it when I first saw it because I was like, oh that looks cool.
[01:52:28] Maybe I'll I'll buy it down the road right like now it's like 800 bucks to buy one of them they were like a hundred bucks when they first released.
[01:52:38] But I do have somewhere around here I have the orb from this movie that has the power stone in it which is kind of fun. Well, because you safeguard it main come on man. We just watch the movie right right.
[01:52:50] So let's see here we do have a special Star Wars guest and we started I think actually with Dan when Dan was on we started to add something kind of fun into this after. After action report if you will that was customized to each guest so.
[01:53:11] I see here I think David you wrote out a question here question question for you both. Okay go what Star Wars characters are each of the guardians so who's Han Solo who are state of different who is star lord who is if he's in Star Wars.
[01:53:32] I kind of I started going through this because of you know there are you see some you know some crossover some reference if you all and it just this kind of funny thing was like okay we'll group.
[01:53:42] I think and then I just would have this rabbit hole of like who's who. Yeah, groups yeah, that that fits well. I can see Star Lord being either Hans like a combination of Han Solo and.
[01:54:01] Lando Lando yeah like a combination of Han Solo and Lando combined because he's. He's that same like outlaw character of Han Solo, but I think he's a lot wittier like Lando is so I can see that. I got to talk it chopper.
[01:54:25] I was gonna say chopper R2D2. I would go more rock more chopper than R2D2 I think because. He's more sarcastic the way choppers very sarcastic and R2.
[01:54:42] Yeah, I would go I would just go more chopper I definitely think he has a lot more qualities that that chopper has than then R2. Okay and if anybody's listening to this and they don't know who chopper is go check out rebels and then.
[01:54:56] But watch rebels before you watch a soka because we're gonna be in bad spot and listen to the bento milk podcast because they talk about chopper it's talking about chopper all the time we love chopper chopper.
[01:55:07] I don't know who good morrow would be what would you say for tomorrow she's I mean. I don't know she's not quite as because like I was thinking generous so but that she's not like jins a little bit more.
[01:55:21] innocent I'd say then think more like Gamora is kind of war hardened which I don't I didn't get that feeling off. You know maybe like not not the original trilogy Princess Lea but like general kind of a badass.
[01:55:39] Was the one I mean does highlight that they're not a lot of stars a lot of great female character or God be you're gonna say I was going to say I can't think of her mind and her name off hand and Ryan will probably be able to nail me with it but the Luke Skywalker's wife in the books.
[01:55:59] Oh Jade yeah a terror jade or something like that or. Let's her name but yeah I'm thinking maybe because you need someone who's a little bit more rough around the edges a little. Boba fat. Boba fat.
[01:56:15] I mean that's that's not a bad call actually I like that that's a good call I can definitely see her being a boba with that yeah I like that. Yeah done. Yeah.
[01:56:25] And then I guess the only other I mean we already went through group but drags drags who's who's the big muscle. I wouldn't be peace because we got a good morning guard. I mean if you really like I'm a black or something I don't know.
[01:56:44] I think yeah that's a good one. Like yeah good call. Done perfect all right. It's all right and to the guess if you thought we weren't nerdy before just in the last five minutes are totally nerded out right there.
[01:57:01] Zibit A of just how to how to any of us ever get married anyway. So Ryan do you want to take the MVP question.
[01:57:13] Yeah so for those who aren't aware we do an MVP and actually we're coming up on another phase review which means that our MVP is will be duking it out here soon.
[01:57:23] We do have a tradition where the MVP cannot be picked in multiple movies at least for David and I guess they have free reign.
[01:57:33] No one is knocked out of this movie so far like we mentioned this is a fully new cast other than Thanos and neither David nor I picked Thanos previously which. Make sense he showed up in an after credits so you know that's about it.
[01:57:45] I don't think either of us picked up the other either. I was tempted to take Stanley in the incredible Hulk as the person that drinks the drink and dies just because that was bad but. I did not. I did not.
[01:58:00] So yeah nobody nobody has been picked from this so it you do have the full slate here. Um of MVP picks so let's hand it over to the guy who has no restrictions and no no future. Considerations Rob who is your MVP of this.
[01:58:20] This is tough because it's such a friend's cast. Oh everybody is so vital to it. And I don't want to pick Peter Quill just because he's the star of it.
[01:58:35] Although he yeah I'm going to probably go with rocket because he I feel he he does bring everybody closer together like the scene we talked about where he's yelling at tracks.
[01:58:50] The scene where you know he's he's the comic relief he's the one that gets him out of the jail. So I want to I'll go and since I won't be here for Guardians of the Galaxy three.
[01:59:02] I will go I'll go with rock but use up my rocket now so there we go. That's fair that that was a. A definite consideration for me is future casting some movies so. Yeah, how about you Ryan who's your MVP.
[01:59:19] Again, I like I mentioned I'm kind of future casting I'm looking through the lens of like hey we're we're going to have to think about some other movies in the future. And so it really comes down to one of two.
[01:59:32] I won't mention the second one just in case it's who you want to pick David but I'm going to go ahead and pick group in this movie. I think he's really fun. It's also well established on this podcast that I am a big fan of the family.
[01:59:50] So obviously hearing been diesel's voice is magical to me but. Did you hear Vin Diesel's voice could you tell that was Vin Diesel if you didn't know it. His voice is a little bit unique so I mean.
[02:00:10] I think it would change the way from his voice I wouldn't know.
[02:00:13] Oh yeah, but yeah, I do like I do like group I think his sacrifice at the end is really cool you know the we are group and he blows up he also has a really sweet like mirroring of.
[02:00:31] The Frankenstein of a Frankenstein film where when they're first arriving on nowhere he pops a little flower out of his hand and gives it to a little girl and then.
[02:00:41] And he goes there into a lake no I'm just kidding but that's what Frankenstein did go on to do right. But yeah, so I would I would go with group in this one how much you David. Oh man, so I agree.
[02:00:55] I'm proud with your analysis in terms of rocket but knowing that. Gardens got three is coming out mind me disabled for later. I struggle with this one because I think.
[02:01:10] I think it's such a great overall cast that you could make the argument for any of them quite frankly. And I want I think I'm going to go with.
[02:01:22] DRAX and I you know again very close between him Peter Quill I feel like my name Peter Quill later on and. But Drax I think was a very kind of key character even though he's you know kind of plays quote the muscle.
[02:01:41] He was funny he was very he had he had a lot of grief and point and see you see his kind of character development if you will again all the characters kind of morphed and changed during the movie. He.
[02:01:55] And he was kind of kind of instrumental in quite frankly like helping to keep them alive in the kill and I just I really just like how it's character kind of developed.
[02:02:07] I thought that like debaties to who before as you know as you monitor Rob he was in the WWE.
[02:02:12] He wanted to get into breaking the acting he very much wanted this role he worked with an acting coach and who helped him to secure the role and you could tell like he was.
[02:02:21] He was into it and he was very kind of believable and you know a lot of the lot of the people have to put on like you know suits and stuff like that and day but he's probably dropped some pounds for the role. They fight.
[02:02:33] Yeah, it's like he's so big. I I turn it like him. Pete but in Quill was my close number two. Quill was also my close number two, but I left him available for you there. So appreciate it. Cool.
[02:02:47] Well, let's see here Rob will have you go up first overall impression and ranking so you don't have to say specifically what number but like is it in the top 10 the middle 10 or the bottom 10 of the MCU. Of all of the MCU movies.
[02:03:03] Yeah, would you would you rank this in like the top third tier? Yeah, it's here or bottom chair. I would definitely put in the top top third tier yes 100%. Just because like I said, I I love this movie. I thought it was an awesome movie.
[02:03:21] It is a movie that I've watched numerous times which I can't say for a lot of the MCU movies but this one I have watched over and over and over again. So it definitely would be in the top tier and then even entertainment wise was great.
[02:03:39] Pointing and see an important of the whole MCU series. I feel it was it was very important to it as well. Because it gets us off of earth other than Thor who was all first but comes to earth.
[02:03:52] So it gets us off earth and it opens up the MCU to anywhere that they want to go including anywhere. So. So yes, so I definitely will put it in the top top 10% top 10. Yes. To take thing to anywhere and to nowhere, right exactly exactly.
[02:04:13] David what you think it's easy top third easy top tier I might even lock it in as top five but I. I will lock it in top five. Nice. It's so good it is. It's it's fantastic.
[02:04:29] I think we're going this so I will say this earns top third all the way across the board. It is just a fantastic movie like I mentioned earlier it's that feeling it feels like the first time that you watch Star Wars right it feels like.
[02:04:42] Oh my god that was so good this is like this is a. Personality to find our type of movie like this is the thing that gets me into the thing that like defines a hobby of mine.
[02:04:55] So yeah, I definitely I'll I'll give it the top third additional question I know we're we're running long here and. Listeners you're welcome but. Do you guys think. That the guardians so guardians of the galaxy do you think it is the. Best non Avengers MCU series.
[02:05:23] You mean are you saying like is it the best like. Trillians one two three yeah guardians one two three versus Iron man one two three versus Thor one two three four. Oh so you're saying best kind of like trilogy or multi so like you're talking.
[02:05:42] Captain America Iron man and man was. Guardians of Galaxy. What am I missing. Marvel Marvel the spider man. Oh spider man I forgot about spider man. Spider man oh. Okay, so I'll go first because on the guest and it my opinion doesn't count.
[02:06:07] Now that you mentioned spider man I think spider man would probably have to be the best. I like as a complete saga I think even with the three different spider men playing all the different spider men. I think I would go with spider man as the best.
[02:06:27] Trillogy slash whatever individual saga I think this is probably second or third. Because. You know I liked the first the word but then the second thought was was not enjoyable even a little bit so it brings it down and of the three.
[02:06:49] I think the second one was my least favorite I didn't hate it.
[02:06:54] I understood what they did with it and why they did what they did with it but of a three part series and then you throw in the holiday special which I thought was just unbelievably amazing like. How much fun they must have had filming that holiday special. Right.
[02:07:13] So yeah I would I would put this in either to maybe three behind Ironman just because Ironman started the whole thing and just the importance of Ironman to it but but yeah definitely definitely two or three for me.
[02:07:29] Brian or David which one do you want to whichever one you want to go first. Yeah, I forgot about spider man when I posted this question if I'm being honest. I would not have I would not have brought this up if if I had remembered spider man.
[02:07:47] So yeah spider man I think is number one I think Guardians is number two and then probably cap number three. I think everything else has like really bright stars and then really low lows.
[02:08:02] You know Ironman to me has a really bright start to start really low low second and then I love Ironman three we established that during that episode whatever. Captain America I think is the most consistently great his first second and third movies were all you know really good.
[02:08:24] All three of the Guardians movies are consistently great all of the spider man movies are consistently great so. Yeah I think if we're not including Avengers as one of the options there and actually I think even if you threw Avengers in it wouldn't rank in those top three.
[02:08:42] No because spoiler alert our next step is going to be a rough one. Wait you didn't put Avengers in the top three. Age of old trons sucks okay but like any war game. Yeah I guess average performance maybe average performance maybe brings it up but yeah yeah.
[02:09:05] Wow okay David what do you think. I think I think you are if we again excluding the Avengers movies I think your top three of. Captain America series Guardian series Spider Man series is probably correct.
[02:09:22] I'd have to think about a little bit I might even have Guardians above and see you Spider man. I had to think about a little bit maybe revisit them but yeah but to your point like they are.
[02:09:32] The fact that we're even discussing the movie with the raccoon and the tree is being one of the best superhero movies is pretty or series I should say it's pretty wild. Yeah and it tests how good it is.
[02:09:44] Yeah I think I think the writing that they did for all three was just phenomenal because you're able to make a raccoon and a tree so lovable and so animated is what makes it that much better you know. Yeah so.
[02:10:03] Awesome well let's go ahead and close it out for people who if you haven't made it this far almost a year into our podcast and you don't remember on your screaming at your stereo why aren't they doing the after credit scene it's because we'll do it after the credits.
[02:10:17] So just wait just be patient but Rob what would you like to plug.
[02:10:25] So a band and a podcast that's my Star Wars podcast we went through all of recently went through a soka week by week and then we did have Ryan plugged it on on the daily bugle the monthly bugle that we did just recently interviewed galactic empire the metal band playing all mostly Star Wars songs but then they also branched out until a lot more of.
[02:10:54] John Williams music they have a metal version of Jurassic Park and the metal version of.
[02:11:01] Let's see other one I forget what else but but they do they do a whole metal version of all the Star Wars song if you want to hear Star Wars songs taking up the next level definitely check out. We're going to make a great deal.
[02:11:16] So I'm going to go back to the last one of the things I'm going to do is we're going to be doing a little bit of a great deal with this. I think we're going to do a great deal with this.
[02:11:28] funny. So they, so galactic empire, I believe is signed by pure noise records, which I am a fan of several different pure noise records bands and I'm on like pure noises newsletter. Okay. Like just before you guys got your interview with them, there are some
[02:11:51] of their record releases were like showing up in the newsletter and stuff. I was like, oh, that's cool. So, and then we got them. Yeah, exactly. Then you guys got them. That's how big we are with our
[02:12:04] thousands and thousands of listeners. So then yeah, don't forget about the other shows on the network. We have our name flagship show years up. They just did their scary stories,
[02:12:19] podcasts or episode, which I think is one of the most fun ones. They do like they invest a good amount of time into writing some spooky stories that are set in Disney areas and that's sort of stuff.
[02:12:33] Really good time. Go listen to it, Eric, Eric and Terran and Jason did a great job with those. They were really good this year. So give that a listen. Also releasing on the ears up feed is
[02:12:47] ears up in depth, which if you think we went negative during the monthly bugle this last month, don't listen to ears up in depth. But it is honest, it is honest news about Disney.
[02:13:06] They try not to take on the sugar coating that a lot of other podcasts do. Then beyond that, we have the Supreme Resort, which I think their next episode is their true
[02:13:20] crime episode about a couple of Disney attractions that no longer exist. You might get to hear my voice on that one. Rob is your voice on there? Yeah, there's a couple of commercial spots in there. Nice. Yeah.
[02:13:36] Do I guess you get to hear lightning and queen's voice not my voice? Um, no boy. And then what else? Oh, scraping the vault. Scraping the vault is straight to it basically this podcast except for straight to their straight to DVD Disney
[02:13:57] sequels. It still exists. They haven't had a release in a while. Lots of stuff going on, lots of business. So, uh, but they'll be releasing another one here soon. So, uh, look for them. And then look
[02:14:09] for us, Pewney pod on your social media of choice. We're across all of the TikToks, the Instagrams. The I guess we technically have an X formerly known as Twitter or whatever the hell you want to call it these days.
[02:14:20] More on Facebook. We got everything you get your, your, um, show announcements. Then we're also on Discord. You can find the heirs up discord link down in our show notes. Come check it out.
[02:14:33] Come hang out. We have a good little community going there. It is, it is pretty fun. But other than that, thank you all for listening and remember Pewney pod will return with Avengers, and Joe Goldtrod. Sweet. So, we did have a mid credit scene and a post
[02:15:17] credit scene here. And we're just going to do them all as one chunk. So, um, David, why don't you take it from here and tell us kind of what happened in those things? Sure, mid credit scene as the
[02:15:29] Jackson 5 music I want you back plays. We see Baby Groot who is now slightly larger than in the previous scene where he's just like the little pot of twig dancing in his pot to the mix tapes on
[02:15:43] while Drax is sitting there polishing his knife on the side. And when he turns his head to look at Baby Groot, Baby Groot stops dancing. Then when he looks away, Baby Groot starts dancing
[02:15:56] again. A little bit here, James Gunn revealed that the old group is actually dead and this new group is his son and that explains why Rocket Soaps had in the movie. And then at the post credit scene
[02:16:10] that we've all become accustomed to, we see the collector. He's sitting in the wreckage of his exhibits. You can imagine just how bummed out that dude is right there. He is drinking when Cosmo
[02:16:22] comes up and looks as face and we hear a voice in the background that says that's gross and the camera turns to reveal. Howard the Duck, one of the items in his collection now sitting at
[02:16:32] broken cage and drinking as well. And I remember at the time thinking, funnel nod, please do God let there not be Howard the Duck movie. I thought for a while they were like, you know what?
[02:16:46] We could do anything. Let's reboot this franchise. He was voiced by Seth Green in this context but yeah, was Howard the Duck the first Marvel movie? It was a very old Marvel movie. I will say that.
[02:17:03] I remember watching it when I first came out and as a kid, I liked it but then again I never read comic books and I just thought of it. This duck that looked like Donald in the real world and
[02:17:15] stuff. But yeah apparently it didn't go over well except for with me. I was the only kid who enjoyed it. But what was the story? What was the connection with George Lucas and Howard the Duck?
[02:17:31] Wasn't he Purdue? I can't remember. He took a big swing. I think he entered into some sort of agreement and I don't know if I had to do like licensing stuff but basically made a terrible economic
