Puny Pod | Phase 1 Episode 3 - Iron Man 2 (ft. Curtis and Grant from Throwin Dice Pod)

ChatGPT says "Iron Man 2" is a 2010 superhero film where Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, faces pressure from the US government to share his technology with the military while battling a new villain with a personal vendetta. Along with his trusted friends and allies, Tony must confront personal demons and health issues as he tries to save the world once again. The film offers action, humor, and nods to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. This month we, AND OUR GUESTS, Grant and Curtis from the Throwin Dice Podcast watched the first direct sequel in the MCU and give you all the crazy details and dated cameos that it includes! In Marvel news this month we discuss New Characters at Avengers Campus, Jon Favreau getting a star on the walk of fame, the Superb Owl Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer and more! Be sure to stick around after the credits for the post credit scene! We also made some announcements about changes coming to the show! We also had some audio challenges, but hopefully they're not tooooo terrible for y'all!

[00:00:00] Welcome to Puny Pod, the show that wants to show you... There is! Let's just talk you become part of a bigger universe. On your left. Puny God Welcome to Puny Pod everyone. The podcast where we rewatch the MCU in release order and cover all things marvel.

[00:00:34] I'm Ryan and my co-hosts who I don't think is allergic to strawberries is David. Hey David how's it going this morning? I'm doing great and to confirm I am not allergic to strawberry. I love her. Perfect.

[00:00:46] And today for the first time on Puny Pod we are joined by some special guests. Our guests today are Curtis and Grant from the Throwin Dice podcast. Howdy, Jens! How's it going man? Oh not too bad not too bad. Alright so Curtis...

[00:01:03] I guess both of you guys, whoever wants to go first. Tell us a little bit about yourselves, tell us about your podcast. Well I guess I'll go first. I'll introduce myself and my name is Curtis Spears. I'm a longtime friend of Ryan's.

[00:01:15] We used to game together back in Olympus comics and games with our friend Kyle, Shadow Kyle. And when I move to England I'm at Grant and we game together for a long time

[00:01:28] for so long in fact that we decided to start talking about it during the COVID lockdowns because we couldn't actually game anymore. So that's when we started the Throwin Dice podcast which is all about tabletop war gaming, tabletop role playing, that sort of thing D&D war hammer

[00:01:46] and as it comes for this podcast we talk a lot about Marvel Crisis protocol which is a fantastic game that we both love. Nice. So I'm Grant. I'm the co-host for Throwin Dice podcast and I'm just the chat nonsense because Curtis does everything.

[00:02:09] He loves me, you know that's that's too good. Yeah I was listening to you guys last episode. Lots of fun stuff with MCP. I am... I have a bunch of MCP. I haven't built or painted it yet.

[00:02:23] Do you want to talk a little bit about that? I mean obviously our listeners probably are we would get into Crisis Protocol a little bit being Marvel fans. Oh Grant is always looking for excuses to talk about MCP aren't you?

[00:02:39] So it's the games been put out by atomic mass games which are part of the Asma Day family and it's a quite a quick-paced, skirmish level game so you only need 10 models so it's nice and quick easy to get into.

[00:02:58] Yeah it's a lot of fun and it's you can mix and match any characters to create your team to play. Yeah that's one of the coolest things about the game is that you don't have to have bad guys versus good guys you can have a team with

[00:03:14] Black Panther and Thanos and Magneto and you know, Sylock and you know however you want on the team like you can mix and match all you need. Which is fun. Yeah it's the only game I've come across where every model

[00:03:29] is compatible with every false so you can that's really mix and match and customize yeah for all those crazy comic team ups. Yeah. Yeah I know when we were game-end together Curtis and I we were playing a lot of hero clicks

[00:03:47] which sort of same thing right you can you can kind of click it all together and and create some of those crazy comic team ups that you would you only wish you could see.

[00:03:58] It is it's a lot like that where you can you can put them all together but there's no hobby in hero clicks all the meetings come pre-esumple pre-painted and I love the hobby aspect of gaming so I was very excited about crisis protocol when it came out.

[00:04:13] That's fair that's fair. All right so yeah Curtis and Grant tell us what your we talked a little bit about MCP but other outside of MCP what's your your experience with Marvel like whether it's through the movies or the comics or other games.

[00:04:33] So mine predominantly was the movies starting off with the Punisher movie back in 2004 and then yeah the Spider-Man ones for Sony and that and yeah that's where I mainly through the films but recently I've started reading some comics about the odds of character here

[00:05:01] and there and then yeah that's where I am and then now I'm focusing a lot more on the comics because MCP and trying to find runs about some of my favourite characters in there.

[00:05:16] Yeah and I I've been reading comics since I was in the hydro adjunberg I've my dad remember when I was six or seven years old my dad bought me it was a big

[00:05:26] crate like a cardboard crate. I remember was orange and black and it had heroes all over it like Wolverine and Punisher and things like that all over in this beautiful arch style and full

[00:05:37] inside of it was just like 300 400 comic books and I don't know how much it was but he just handed to me and he was like here you go and I'm sitting there and I'm looking at I'm like oh my god

[00:05:47] where do I start and my dad digs through it my dad digs through this this crate and he pulls out it was a Frank Miller Punisher. No sorry Frank Miller Daredevil it was a Frank Miller Daredevil

[00:05:59] and he's like there you go Daredevil and I was like okay what's this guy's thing and he goes well he's actually handicapped he's a blind superhero and I was like oh my god and I'd never

[00:06:10] blew my mind I'd never been thought of it so yeah that was my first comic book was a Frank Miller Daredevil and never looked back since I've absolutely loved comic books my entire life

[00:06:23] something I could talk about from here until the day I die and hopefully I will get to nice that's awesome that is awesome yeah actually funny funny dad stories yes literally yesterday

[00:06:36] I was hanging out with my family talking to my dad about comics and stuff because he used to be a big collector and I discovered my dad actually had the forethought and now I'm about to reap

[00:06:52] the benefits you have the forethought of buying two of every secret wars issue as they were coming out so I was like cool I get to I get one to keep in one to see how they explode in value once the

[00:07:10] that movie comes out here in a few years I can't wait for that I'm so excited yeah it's going to be a blast all right guys so before we get any further into the episode I do want to throw out our first

[00:07:26] plug here podcast grow best by word of mouth so our biggest plug this week or this month sorry is just to ask you all to tell your friends right tell tell a friend about our podcast this month

[00:07:41] get one person listening so we can watch this be this community continue to grow it's growing we have we were really happy for our current listeners but definitely would love to see some more

[00:07:54] folks get in we saw some numbers in a conversation we were having with some of the other years up podcast shows if you have more than 150 listeners as a podcast you are in the above 50th percentile

[00:08:12] so we're shooting to be in the above 50th we're not there yet but we're trying so yeah tell your friends let them know to listen to this great show yeah we're still outside the apple top 10 so let's try that

[00:08:27] breakthrough between still at apple top 12 not just so real quick past show addition slash correction as I was doing research for this movie we miss discussing a cameo that I think is really really cool an Iron Man 1 so in Iron Man 1 Tom Morello from Raging and Svashine

[00:08:51] was actually one of the members of the 10 rings so in the cave when Tony is building the Mark 1 he was actually one of the 10 rings which we totally missed that in our first episode so I just had

[00:09:04] to bring it here yeah Tom Morello rules that I did not know that that's fantastic right all right so with the administrative pieces out of the way let's jump into the news

[00:09:18] all righty so this past month we saw a lot of news and we'll talk a little bit at the end of the new segment about some new plans with the news so stay tuned for that but getting into our

[00:09:45] stories our first story of the month here John Favrow famously are our own happy hogan as well as the director or of several MCU projects and producer on a lot of them as well was given his

[00:10:03] Hollywood Walk of Fame star this past month so really cool to see that recognition come out for one of the MCU family yeah great very I was gonna say very well very well deserved let us

[00:10:16] also a lot of the work they does for the series for yeah star were series as well so glad to see him yeah obviously like huge work on on properties I love also properties there covered on

[00:10:30] this network if you are into star war stuff make sure you check out the Bantiful Boys I know they'll be talking about this too because they love the Mandalorian that's Bantiful Milk podcast on

[00:10:42] the network but and John Favrow obviously huge in that so really excited for for that moving on to our next bit of news here so we did see I think this is some unfortunate news but I also

[00:11:01] think it's it's good news in the other on the other hand so the Marvel's movie which is Captain Marvel Ms. Marvel and Spectrum or was set for the end of September and got moved to the beginning

[00:11:22] of November for its release date so pretty big push there about a month I hope I hope that we see it I hope that it pays off you know I hope that they kind of saw that there was there was things

[00:11:37] that needed to be adjusted and so they pushed it I also see this is pushing out of kind of the summer blockbuster expectation right releasing in August you're going to kind of have a bigger box office expectation on you performances is more harshly judged releasing in that time

[00:11:59] by pushing it back obviously that helps I feel like spacing out Marvel properties is also pretty smart I mean a lot of people have been talking for a lot of years about Marvel fatigue

[00:12:10] but or super hero fatigue but like I think they've realized that now now they don't have to shove as much stuff on Disney Plus and in the movie theaters as they as they can they can space that

[00:12:21] out a little bit and still make lots of money I never complained about it also that I'll never complain about watching a different Marvel show every week but I know a lot of people did so maybe

[00:12:31] this is just more this move absolutely and I was actually talking about this in our discord community I was talking a little bit about how I also feel like Marvel right now is in a set of stories

[00:12:46] that the reason they worked when they were released as comics is because comics have a pretty low expectation of readership you don't expect every person who buys a Marvel comic to read every

[00:12:58] Marvel comic like that's that's not the expectation and I think that's clashing a little bit with the industry's expectation of the Marvel movies where the expectation is everybody's watching every Marvel movie right and so I think I think the industry needs to the industry needs to flex

[00:13:18] to this as well as just expectations need to flex to hey not everybody's gonna watch every movie it's you know you can tell some interesting stories they might have middleing performance

[00:13:29] it's still gonna be you know it's still gonna be a great story and you know it'll it'll kind of it'll all heal itself yeah it's regression towards the meaning yeah I was gonna say I do

[00:13:41] I do think it's a bit of a challenge to have good standalone properties which are also connected like you were saying right for some folks who don't want to see everything on Disney plus and

[00:13:53] don't want to they don't want to invest that time to enjoy a standalone you know quantum mania or standalone block Panther movie right that's one of the challenge so how yeah I think

[00:14:06] and we won't talk about quantum mania too much because we'll be talking about it in about five years when we get there but I do think quantum mania is gonna be one that does well on like

[00:14:20] classic rewatch status I know I just saw news literally as I was getting into the studio this morning that quantum mania is projected to see like a 70% drop-off in viewership from last weekend to this

[00:14:35] weekend which makes sense right it got the critics didn't love it I loved it but I also know it's kind of an esoteric kind of for the for the heads I guess I will say like for for the real nerds out there

[00:14:55] type of movie and so I can see where it's not gonna have a great theater run but I think as we push forward into the next set of Avengers movies that deal a lot more with king and stuff like that

[00:15:10] people are gonna want to go back and watch it so it'll be interesting to see how how like a whole classic functions within the MCU cool so moving on to I just said their name but

[00:15:25] moving on to some news about some characters that are showing up here in Avengers campus here in Disneyland so added this month king has showed up in Avengers campus king has come to

[00:15:40] Avengers campus so you can go meet king you can also meet moon girl which they just per me or moon girl and devil dinosaur as a cartoon it's a really fun cartoon as a side note but

[00:15:53] kind of cool to get to go see them in person see them live action the here on on the network the supreme resort does a lot of stuff with the parks and I think they actually talked about this

[00:16:07] story and talked about how it's really cool to see Marvel embrace all their properties even their pocket ones and put them everywhere right that synergy piece is really really neat to see

[00:16:22] and really cool to see that all the way across the board so moving on from our core news we're going to move into what I like to call the trailer park this month we really only saw one big trailer for

[00:16:38] the MCU it was during the superb owl we got a trailer a new trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy volume three yeah we got to see some really cool stuff in that it looks like our

[00:16:56] villain our main villain is gonna be the high evolutionary and we got to see a lot of him in it really cool kind of getting to see him and then the I would say on the cosmic side of the MCU probably

[00:17:15] the most anticipated character considering he's been he's been hinted towards for what four movies now Adam Orlock we got to see him in the flesh I'm so ready for a more luck man oh it's gonna be so good I've been waiting

[00:17:38] re reading the old like Jim Sterling stuff just ready ready for Adam Orlock man yeah it's it's going to be a blast did you so it sounds like you guys all got a chance to check out that trailer

[00:17:49] sure did I did and that's because I don't watch trailers that's fair hey you know what that's a good way to go through life sometimes yeah I like to go in blind to a Marvel movie so

[00:18:03] I've got no expectations it's all fair enough hey I'm one of those weird people to do that no that walked out of the screen when the trailer come on waited three minutes and then we'll

[00:18:19] I don't think it's weird at all I actually watched this one one to only wanted to what I watched it because I couldn't wait but I also like you I want to be a little bit surprised right I want to

[00:18:29] I don't want to look at it you know second by second and frame by frame and try to catch everything I just want to like really enjoy it when I go see it later it's fair that's good. All right well that

[00:18:41] closes out our core news a couple of news pieces about the podcast itself one on the ears up Etsy page we do now have a zip up hoodie of our of our logo I ordered mine this week super excited to

[00:18:59] get it on so check that out if you've been looking for something to rep us in the cold weather and then the other thing that I wanted to announce this this month here we're going to change

[00:19:13] the format of the show a little bit so so far we've been doing these monster two hour episodes where we talk about a bunch of news I don't think that this one's going to be that long of course

[00:19:25] I'm saying that and I'm probably cursing us again I said that every week but so far we're outpacing the last couple weeks but I really enjoy covering the news

[00:19:40] I like getting in depth with it there's a ton of news that I cut out from this episode just to keep the time a little bit tighter starting this next month David and I will be doing a new show

[00:19:53] I'm right now the name I'm working with is the monthly view will we'll do a new show it will release on the same feed as our as our main review show it'll but the goal is to you know have two

[00:20:10] one hour episodes or 130 minutes so one one hour episode something like that a month instead of one two hour episode every month just to make it a little bit more chunked out

[00:20:21] and get you guys all the news goodness with all the review goodness so that we don't have to feel like we're rushing either one or we're skipping news stories or anything like that

[00:20:32] we want to make sure that all of our listeners get all that goodness from us so that should that we'll start this month and so the episode on Thor that will do coming out you know next month

[00:20:46] that one will be without you know a significant news segment here at the beginning smart making more more content more better right exactly exactly and I just could not bring myself

[00:20:57] to get rid of the news I like I kicked it around so long but it's it's just so fun oh I should also mention that new show if you are a if you are somebody who's watching the MCU for the first time

[00:21:10] with us skip the new shows we we are we are the things to take the spoiler filter off for those new shows so like Kevin Feige gave an interview this last month in entertainment weekly that was

[00:21:28] all about you know the next few the next few phases and stuff like that had lots of things that would be spoilers it it that's why we were not covering it here but when we cover it in the new show

[00:21:45] we will cover it with the with the spoilers intact so if you are one of those people who hasn't watched the MCU you're listening to us to watch it skip the news shows every month

[00:21:58] they are going to include spoilers all righty so from here that's all the news that we have let's go ahead let's get into the movie breakdown the actual meat and potatoes of the show

[00:22:13] so I'm going to toss it over to David first for his traditional production details the segment thank you Ryan okay so we are we watched Iron Man 2 which is the sequel to Iron Man first time

[00:22:27] in the movie released May 7 2010 this is the third movie in phase one and the release of this film two curses earlier point was the greatest gap in the MCU coming almost two years after the

[00:22:42] incredible Hulk in 2008 it's interproduction while the first time I was still in theaters it stars Robert Danny Jr returning, Gwyneth Paltrow returning we have a new roadie done sheetle we have introductions of Scarlet Johanson as an atosh romanoff Mickey work as Ivan Vankel with

[00:23:03] lash Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer we see Greg Clark Greg again his film Agent Phil Colson John Slattery as the new Howard Stark and the rest we've seen Sam and Jackson returns Paul that news harvest so it was directed by John Favreau who directed the original Iron Man movie

[00:23:22] it was the screenplay which by Justin Thoreau who was an actor principally any wrote Tropic Thunder which I loved and rockvages the time is two hours four minutes this was a more successful film than the first Iron Man movie it was more successful than the Hulk the

[00:23:41] budget was 170 million opening weekend was 128 million domestic gross it was it grows to 312 million behind Toy Story and Alice Wonderland your national gross 300 million for total of 621 so in ranks is the number 22 MCU movie in terms of worldwide gross just behind Aunt Man the loss

[00:24:02] and just ahead of the first Iron Man movie so Iron Man the release of Iron Man was a bit of relief to Marvel Studios at the time the potential that was there for the interconnected MCU

[00:24:15] to derail if that is we talked about earlier if these you know these three movies bomb but but they had to benefit the benefit they had at the time was that it was not a saturated

[00:24:26] comic marketplace and they had rapid engineers so those two things really kind of helped help them and get the foot up on DC which wouldn't launch until later on rotten tomatoes critics score 71% audience 71% so fairly you know fairly decent returns or reviews

[00:24:47] if you will real quick on casting Tony Stark was obviously Rob Denginier plays a fantastic Tony Stark Sam Rockwell was also considered he was the second choice for the role and ended up using in this film as I mentioned Ford Don Cheetah replaced Terrence Howard who they offered

[00:25:10] lower salary lesser role he was difficult to work with. Don Cheetah was given two hours to accept the role which was extended to four hours since he was kids birthday party will known fact. Howard Stark we have John Slatter replacing Jerry George Sanders who played Stark and photographs

[00:25:27] in at the beginning of Iron Man. A little fun fact John Slatter is only two years a month old than Rob Denginier but plays a place in the middle of a 10 robins was also considered

[00:25:41] lots of folks were considered for Natasha Romoff Emily Bluntz was up with the first choice but couldn't take the role because she was contracted to appear in Goldberg's travel just could be Jessica Alba Natalie Pormann Brielarson Angelina Jolie all considered and many of them were given

[00:25:58] other roles in the MCU and my little favorite alternate casting Justin Hammer Alpachino was considered for the role you only imagine Alpachino you know everything screaming a whole lot

[00:26:11] there was a lot of we'll get to it probably a little bit later on a lot of drama on the set but we'll talk a little bit about Mickey Rork and some of the challenges he faced but I think that the real

[00:26:26] you know this movie settles in nicely with Kevin Faggan kind of taking the reins but that's principally it this was a bit of a frantic movie which we'll talk about as we get into it and anyway that's the the background production notes for our man. Jessica question

[00:26:50] what do you think that Alpachino would have been able to do? Do you think you would have been able to do the Justin Hammer dance which is the best part of the movie of the Justin Hammer shimmie now oh man

[00:27:05] now it would yeah it would definitely be a shuffle for sure right like I can't I mean Alpachino would just be wild in that role you would be working on each other I don't think in doing the

[00:27:18] what's that? They've been Mickey Rork trying to top each other and their scenes would have been hilarious so good if you know this is what they should put on Disney Plus is they should put out

[00:27:29] the scenes where they are acting out like when you are auditioning for the roles if there's an audition of Alpachino doing anything more related sign me up I'd 300% new what if series live action what if just all Alpachino what if Alpachino was Ironman

[00:27:52] wow oh we might have to add that to the roster of the super secret spoiler show where we cast Nick Cage in every movie maybe we'll we'll add Alpachino to that roster oh my god Alpachino

[00:28:07] and Nick Cage acting as as Nick Fury and Ironman together oh bro oh man so good so good I do I do have to say this the casting I missed herance Howard in this movie

[00:28:22] but Don Chiegel is just such a big chat energy from Don Chiegel he's such a cool dude yeah he's entrance to this movie is amazing yes so blunt to the point get over it let's go

[00:28:36] oh good so good all right before we get into the personal details about our viewings of this movie I did just get an email from someone else in the in the network it's it's with a

[00:28:51] file attached it looks like it's from Jason's nephew Ashir so those are always good time and we're gonna play it real quick so let's let's check this out this brain the storm is brilliant a sleeping tiger is awakening

[00:32:57] our our guests are totally confused I don't know if I'm a B.M. or P.P. or oh okay yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

[00:33:10] can I be both yes can I all all all all B.M. times is P.P. times but not all P.P. times is B.M. times? yes uh I will make sure that the uh B.M. the milk boys know that you're in the Legion of both

[00:33:23] uh well I literally I literally I literally just watched grant subscribe to the B.M. the milk podcast like while that was playing no it's so he must I mean you got some nice there you go you're welcome Rob

[00:33:38] um awesome all right guys so yeah moving over into our breakdown um so I always like to set the stage with a little bit of what was this first viewing or what was this like for you right

[00:33:54] so I'm gonna start we're gonna we're gonna go question by question um so I'm gonna start first what was my first viewing of Iron Man 2 like I think I know I watched it in theaters

[00:34:09] I'm pretty sure I watch it on opening night. I think this predates um I think this maybe try and remember uh I think this and Thor were two that I watched on opening night

[00:34:26] in the theater but I did not watch it with the com with the local comic book shop I think those two were the last two where that this story is different um so I believe I went to see it with some

[00:34:41] friends um and checked it out opening night in the theaters um but not not quite the other story which I'll tell probably in a couple of movies but um well yeah David how about you?

[00:34:55] Opening weekend not opening nights I remember very much looking forward to it because I really enjoyed the first Iron Man movie and was excited to see like how they're going to expand

[00:35:07] because this is the beginning of the MCU right and just kind of seeing where they got this this to me was the what feels like the first in the movie and we'll kind of get into it a little bit later on

[00:35:16] but I was I'm opening weekend for sure it was great I really enjoyed it at the time. Nice nice how about uh great and Curtis how about you guys? So my first time was huddled around a laptop in the workshops of our university

[00:35:37] watching a torrented rip file download it quite soon after release um but yes I didn't see this in the cinemas uh because I was a dirty student scumbag. I am I went to see this on opening night midnight show it was on it was a Wednesday midnight

[00:36:02] show if I remember or that might have been Iron Man one it was a it was a midnight show either way I had my friend my friend Gimpy was there uh his cousin I believe came with us uh yeah we we were

[00:36:14] there suited and booted ready to go man it was Iron Man you know like yeah let's go yeah. Yeah I think saying suited and booted I may have worn I'm trying to remember one. I might have worn the Iron Man or the Iron Ram Mark 1

[00:36:36] uh I don't think I've talked about this on the podcast yet so um once upon a time I went to a university called uh Colorado State University their colors are green and gold and because green and gold are their colors I decided I was going

[00:36:59] to make an Iron Man suit that was green and gold so I replaced all the red with green it is not a full suit uh the Iron Man Mark 1 I'll tell the story in parts I'll talk about the

[00:37:13] upgrades as they happen like throughout the MCU um so by Iron Man 2 I was most likely only wearing like a child's Halloween face mask that was just the face mask it wasn't the whole head it was

[00:37:31] just the face mask uh and I just took in my painted it green where where there was red um and I think I was wearing a CSU football jersey I don't think I had body armor at that point

[00:37:46] so that that's Mark 1 and that that maybe is what I wore to Iron Man 2. You're gonna look like Iron Man and the green man from it's always sunny in Philadelphia how to

[00:37:58] baby that's kind of what it looks like. That's fair that's fair I actually add a Comic Con one time because this evolved so like I say this evolved eventually I had body armor and stuff but um

[00:38:12] at a Comic Con one time somebody actually thought I was doing the Iron Man green lantern from Iron Man's for them comics it was it was pretty funny I was like there you are you

[00:38:24] homo rise up yeah I was like digs that's not what this is but cool why do you like it the helmets are actually still up behind me they're they're in my background of my shot here so

[00:38:41] but yeah I almost see Boba. That's that's the mando Ewok there there's one of those Iron Man helmets but yeah that's my helmet from the mando Ewok. There's a lot of Star Wars content on this episode.

[00:39:02] All right let's jump into our second question oh yeah we covered everybody's first viewing let's jump into the second question so I covered this a little bit um you know what was what was your first what was your feeling before going into that first viewing.

[00:39:26] I was ecstatic I was like through the roof excited because we were getting Marvel as a universe right by now putting ourselves in 2010 brain oh excuse me um we had uh we had Iron Man 1 come out

[00:39:50] we had the aftercredits scene with um with Nick Fury so we knew the Avengers initiative was on the table right we knew we were building towards that it wasn't like today where we had like six

[00:40:05] more phases announced uh ahead of time right we kind of were getting peace meal pieces um so I was really excited to see where this was going as I've said many times Iron Man's my favorite character

[00:40:20] I love the tech characters so seeing another Iron Man movie I was through the roof excited um I had watched incredible Hulk like I said on a strange flash drive that I don't know why it existed

[00:40:39] but um you know definitely still really excited for the future of the MCU and and seeing as it was developing kind of still hadn't I would say found my community necessarily within comics at the

[00:40:56] time I wasn't necessarily connected with the local comic book shop at the time so kind of still the weird guy who was really into comics out of his friend group but yeah um how about uh how

[00:41:08] about you David what was your feeling going into the first viewing of this one? I was I was similarly looking forward to it maybe not quite as ecstatic as you but I'm a big Robert Downey Jr fan

[00:41:21] and uh read the demon in a bottle comic line way back when which was part of the um inspiration for the movie so I was looking forward to seeing how they were kind of build on the first one

[00:41:35] and they just you know start work picked up how about you uh courage and grant well we're uh well we were uh um how were you feeling right before watching the movie for the first time

[00:41:45] I was absolutely mad I was mad about it I was a big action figure collector so I had all the all the toys all like you know a Ironman uh three and three quarter GI Joe sized toys and stuff like

[00:41:59] that coming out at the time um I I loved it I was so over the moon that like comic books were a viable thing now you know like we we we we've had two two movies um incredible Hulk wasn't

[00:42:14] hugely well received but like it was still it was an incredible Hulk movie you know and it had Ironman and it like my brain was you know out of the back of my skull so I was just I was

[00:42:26] excited like I said I was there midnight show ready to go um you know when when you see the warm machine teases and you see you know black widows in the commercial and stuff like that

[00:42:38] how can you not just go into this movie knowing that you're going to get some goodness coming you're going to get something that's going to really build towards you knew it was coming in

[00:42:51] Avengers movie you know like yeah just just ready to go so um I a bit like a David was just excited to see another Ironman movie it was it was the first one was really good I really enjoyed it

[00:43:09] and other than that I didn't have too much expectations because as I said I wasn't really I didn't read comic books when I was younger um that I only started more in my adult life so

[00:43:22] yeah I was just just happy to be there yeah nice all right so last bit of stage setting here what were you thinking going back into this movie right we all watched it this month um what were you

[00:43:41] thinking getting back into it here I I know for me this is my least watch Ironman movie I watch Ironman one all the time it's kind of like I mentioned during the incredible Hulk episode

[00:43:56] it's one that I can turn on if I'm tired if I'm hung over if my kid is kept me up all night I can turn on Ironman it's great Ironman 3 I watch every Christmas season because it's a freaking Christmas

[00:44:08] movie I don't care what anyone else says I watch it every Christmas season it's you know it's something I watch at least once a year if not more frequently Ironman 2 is kind of that middle piece that I

[00:44:21] I just haven't watched as much so I was pretty excited to get back into it I was nervous because I know that like the societal discourse around it is not great like people don't love Ironman 2

[00:44:34] there's a lot of kind of retroactive trash hawk around it so I was a bit nervous as an Ironman fan I was like oh I'm gonna hate this spoiler alert for later in the episode I didn't hate it so

[00:44:49] at least we're good there but yeah so it was definitely a little bit of nerves get it back into it but I'm glad we we got to watch it here through this rewatch how about you David so

[00:45:03] when the Phantom Menace came out 1999 and I stood in line to watch it I was very excited for the film like being a huge star with Ironman and afterwards I'm walking out talk friends like I was good right like the

[00:45:19] I was a good movie and and wondering how you know obviously did not hold it very well and of similar thing this time going back like okay was I remember being a really good movie

[00:45:32] but I wanted to see if it would hold up you know when you look at these films and retro respect you know you look to how does the CGI hold up has the casting the storyline how does it

[00:45:45] relate to the other MCU stuff so I was principally looking forward to like seeing how this being really in my mind kind of spark at the MCU what those different elements how they're looking out in retrospect for our guests how about Chris Grant what about you

[00:46:05] so yeah as similar really this is one that I've not not watched a lot of rewatched a lot of a toy I think I probably may be seen it five to ten times whereas there are some MC here movies that I've probably seen about 30 plus times

[00:46:30] yeah so when we're going back to watch it I was like what happens in this one but I remember I remember I remember I remember he wrote because in it I didn't really remember how or why or what so yeah it was almost almost like rediscovering it

[00:46:52] lucky in a that weed oh yeah I remember this kind of way I think that when I when I went back to rewatch at this time it's it is one of the ones that I don't watch very often but whenever I'm editing podcasts which is quite often

[00:47:11] I'll sit down and I'll just put on a Marvel movie that I've that I know by heart and I'll edit podcasts while I you know let the movie play in the background

[00:47:20] and this is one of those that I've seen I don't know how many times you know just sitting with it in the background and I did find I've watched it I watched it last year and I've watched it again

[00:47:33] this month for this podcast and I'd found it in both viewings the parts that got me so amped when I was in the theater the first time are still to this day just so hype like

[00:47:47] there's parts in this movie where I freak out just watching it going like this is it oh my god and like um there there are parts that I'm watching that I'm like oh man this is pretty bad right here

[00:48:00] so that's um it's it's a 50 50 mix but I think I think the good outways the bad for me I wouldn't I wouldn't put this in the est here of any ranking or anything like that but um it's not

[00:48:12] a bad movie at all I mean people can change their mind later on but I don't think this is a bad movie that's fair that's fair all right let's jump into our breakdown as a reminder

[00:48:24] this probably last time I'll say this in a review show but um we are gonna try and stay away from like reading the script so it is gonna be broad strokes we definitely encourage everybody to go back

[00:48:35] watch this movie either before or right after listening to the episode um I think that makes it make a lot more sense you can pick up on any of the details we leave out um and we also will not

[00:48:47] spoil um stuff for future projects that we haven't watched yet right so we've watched Ironman 1 we watched Incredible Hulk we've watched Ironman 2 we're not gonna tell you you know the the stuff

[00:49:01] about things that happen on down the line um in this segment um we will we we may leave some breadcrumbs like hey this this is gonna come back right but we won't tell you you know the exact

[00:49:18] gory details of exactly how um you know Ironman's grandchildren die in the third movie but um but yeah so so let's jump into the scenes here um so we open up in Russia

[00:49:37] literally moments the same moments as the end of Ironman 1 we see that that who we end up finding out is Anton Vanko is watching a Russian broadcast of Tony Stark's famous i.m. Ironman press conference

[00:50:01] and uh he he's dying as he's watching this he tells Ivan Vanko his son his final wishes which are essentially hey you know i here's my knowledge here here's what i know uh through

[00:50:20] through some cutscenes and things like that we do see uh Ivan get really really drunk on some Russian vodka and then stumble upon a blueprint uh for the arch reactor that has both Anton Vanko's

[00:50:36] name as well as Howard Stark's name on it um through these cutscenes we see Ivan successfully recreate the arch reactor we assumed to build his own suit similar to the Ironman suit the Mark

[00:50:51] 1 in the cave um that Tony famously built with a box of scraps in a cave um so yeah that's that's kind of our intro where where we kind of get to know the Vanko's a little bit right uh kind

[00:51:06] of cool there um i will say Mickey Rork is a a phenomenal actor right award winning actor however his intro in this movie where he is staring at a doorframe with his like hand on his head

[00:51:25] just dramatically leaning against this doorframe absolutely just like i don't even know how to describe it just over the top dramatic i am pretty broad that's fair i don't i i don't have a real sense for the time frame but it seems like he like builds the

[00:51:49] arch reactor like days or hours and i for me the one rewatch one thing i notice like he just does not come across as like technically like he seems like he would struggle with the laptop

[00:52:03] it just didn't real at the actor himself though uh doesn't strike me as brilliant engineer but obviously obviously was if he's able to rebuild uh using his dad's plans it's fair that's fair

[00:52:16] the first thing that i noticed about this is uh the lack of ramen jawati musical score it really upset me because the musical score in Ironman one was so good and the from here on the musical

[00:52:29] score is kind of kind of boring yeah um you know one thing we see as the MCU goes on is like the Avengers theme is really iconic but it would be really nice if if those Avengers had a

[00:52:44] had their own scores like that first Ironman score should have followed him through these movies because it was so good ramen jawati like you know from Pacific Rim game of thrones things like

[00:52:56] and they had him for Ironman one and then it's gone yeah you know like if they could have kept him throughout the MCU had been fantastic absolutely that's that's one of those interesting

[00:53:07] things now before i get into this i do have to give a shout out because the music was done by john debney who listeners of this podcast met network may know is very s felt uh he's a very good looking man

[00:53:19] but um but anyways you know i i do think so a common guest on this network and somebody who i listen to his music pretty frequently because it helps put my kid to sleep is a really great

[00:53:39] piano composer named tom amine who tends to do interviews here on the network he does these he had these like relaxing piano versions of a lot of pop culture things

[00:53:55] and i was thinking the other night he was on one of the shows and was asking for you know interview questions and that's our stuff and i was like man i really need to get him into

[00:54:05] marvel stuff and you know partially so that we can get him on the show and partially because that would just be really cool but really at the end of the day you have the Avengers theme and that's

[00:54:16] it there there's no iconic music other than i guess down the road when we get to some of the cosmic stuff with like guardians and you get the pop culture music but it's not a veneer it's

[00:54:29] not marvel music which is unfortunate you know and compared to the other properties we love you know star wars right star wars you could be walking through the grocery store and hear the imperial

[00:54:40] march and know that that star wars music that really doesn't happen with the MCU which is unfortunate but first story you go to where there's a grandma you're not going to you're thinking cool geez David but yeah yeah i think i definitely agree john

[00:55:02] john devney will spell and and everything is does not give you the the power of that score i will also say we simultaneously in this this set up from a film aspect was really cool

[00:55:19] we see we see a lot of mirrors they use the use mirroring really well here so we see Anton vanco or i'm sorry i've been vanco hammering out metal on an anvil almost the exact same framing

[00:55:38] as Tony Stark in the cave um we see the simultaneous through through news clippings we see that Tony Stark has you know done a lot of good for the world right i think one of the things was like

[00:55:53] east west uh well was it east west relations stabilized because of Ironman and we see a lot of news clippings about the success of Ironman uh well on the flip side we're watching i've

[00:56:08] in vanco just descended into being a villain right just so you kind of see this this mirrored progression for both characters which is really cool from there from that intro then we we get to see

[00:56:23] the intro to the Stark expo so Ironman leaps out of a plane he heads down through fireworks going off all around him you see him do a superhero landing get a suit down which hey well i love a suit

[00:56:39] down around here um and then uh he you know gives basically a speech ex-stalling the values of exactly what he's doing basically bragging about himself the whole time um and then you get in

[00:56:57] then he kicks it over to his dad um to talk about uh Stark expo and the technology in the world of tomorrow uh backstage while this video is playing Tony tests his blood we see that uh his

[00:57:11] palladium uh levels are elevated uh kind of setting us up for the you know the large storyline here of of the the thing that's saving him is killing him too um as he leaves he encounters various

[00:57:29] celebrities we've got uh cameo from Oracle founder Larry Ellison in this scene uh we also have a cameo from Larry King aka Stanley our Stanley cameo came out uh we also see i think maybe one of

[00:57:45] the only people other than um Stanley to get cameo's in multiple movies which is Seth Green he will come up further on down the line when we talk about uh guardians of the galaxy um so Seth

[00:58:05] Green is also kind of in the uh bunch of people that he leaves and then um and yeah so uh he also in that uh I did I did I forgot a good one we see a little kid and I I do want to say who this cameo

[00:58:28] is or is that a spoiler oh no the little kids at the the little kids at the end well yeah well he's also in here he also gets his uh helmet signs yep okay well the uh the one I was talking about

[00:58:40] as you see Olivia Munn and it's true who went on to play silo at the next man universe that is true good catch good catch I appreciate that yeah she's playing a reporter I don't know if she's playing

[00:58:50] herself I I never really I didn't do enough research to know but we'll assume she's just can't be knowing as herself like I say this is really good the sakes they set this does set up

[00:59:01] a theme that runs through the whole MCU doesn't it about um like superheroes as celebrities in real life absolutely uh which yeah with the we've the expo and the the dancers and the cheering like

[00:59:18] adoring fans and then yeah the kids getting merged signed on the way out like it's a real this is the first time we've really seen the obviously because it's quite a great we're very early in

[00:59:30] but it's is a thing that the runs all the way through and it's something I've really enjoyed watching and see like this is really like the or it's really interesting because it sets the MCU apart from

[00:59:43] other comic book movies and other comic books really right because like so in preparing for this episode I actually went back and I read Iron Man 123 170 which is sort of the demon in a bottle area

[00:59:59] um and one of the things that was striking to me and one of the things that they had to change because you know we had the famous I am Iron Man uh lying in the first movie is

[01:00:13] these aren't secret identities at this point um Iron Man is Tony Stark and whereas in the comic books that was hidden and in most comic book movies the heroes maintain that secret identity

[01:00:28] and the MCU distinctly chose to not do that with most of its heroes right there's a few heroes that still have their secret identity intact you know um as we go along we'll highlight those but um

[01:00:42] Iron Man very distinctly is and is Tony Stark everybody knows that he is a celebrity and so it is cool to get to see that play out in that way um and I should

[01:00:54] would note that line was completely ad-libbed. Got a lot of Tony Stark got a lot of Robert Downey Jr just forcing the narrative story uh yes absolutely pushy with him so we have to do celebrities now

[01:01:10] so a couple other things about this so we talked about the cameo's cameo heavy which is cool with Sarasthan Lee cameo this might actually so this is actually an earlier cameo then incredible Hulk I remember us talking about an incredible Hulk was that the

[01:01:27] earliest one this one came earlier in the movie then incredible Hulk so hey I was wrong um but the other thing that was striking to me with Howard Stark's video in particular

[01:01:41] uh was Howard Stark is so clearly based on Walt Disney here um and like just that this was very clearly inspired by almost ripped directly from the Epcot film that Tony or that

[01:02:02] Walt Disney did Howard Stark's introduction to the world's fair what you know in the world of tomorrow very clearly could have been the experimental prototype community of tomorrow um the idea of

[01:02:17] you you technologies going to facilitate it so that you can work really hard and then you can enjoy leisure time activities it the parallels here as as a Disney fan and you know we are on a

[01:02:30] Disney soundtrack network here so I would be remiss not to note that um this was as a Disney fan this was really cool I don't know if this was inspired before or after the purchase

[01:02:48] you know before yeah yeah so this this was yeah this is yeah yeah so so you know maybe this was a ploy to get them to purchase maybe this was to get people interested but I don't think so

[01:03:01] I think I think it was taking a futureist you know a futureist that most people knew in in culture and kind of applying him to Howard Stark which was really cool to see now do you think Howard Stark

[01:03:14] also froze his head I thought they'd need I mean probably I was gonna need that jump I didn't know it would fly into it work yeah yeah probably oh man yeah that's gonna be in phase six is

[01:03:34] is Howard Stark's frozen head I really like the same hard to gonna hard to freeze your head when I'm so sorry you're good I'm just gonna mute the mic oh man yeah they're never

[01:04:07] how to guess it can be right. What I don't the part so that it will parts of the movie that will remain for me like a little bit of a why did they do this or this doesn't quite make

[01:04:21] sense I don't think you'd get a subpoena like the day before to appear before the Senate just you know call me crazy but I'm guessing you get a little bit more head yeah yeah could be could be yeah

[01:04:33] Tony was subpoenaed and did have to testify before the armed forces committee of the Senate at the hearing Tony kind of is making a pretty good he's just making a joke of it all you know it

[01:04:51] talks about giving over the Iron Man suit is tan amount to slavery or prostitution depending on where you're at he is is just cracking up all over it right and as he as he's having this conversation

[01:05:14] we're introduced to Justin Hammers or Justin Hammer not Justin Hammers so Justin Hammer of Hammer Industries comes in gives a brief speech talking about you know what he sees in the

[01:05:31] the Iron Man suit and then Rode is called to testify which we do get you know we get our introduction to our new journal or Colonel James Rhodes as mentioned in the intro no more Terrence Howard

[01:05:50] now we get Don Sheetle we see I would like to note that this is one of my favorite introductions right I think it was mentioned earlier like I look it's me I'm here deal with it let's move on

[01:06:06] like absolutely recast deal with it yeah yep you also get to see some visual evidence some videos of other suits which I do think that'll probably I would not be surprised to see this scene actually

[01:06:21] get like archival footage reshoen here in a series that maybe coming out next year I think now at this point but we're headed towards an armor wards kind of thing so I think we'll get to see some more

[01:06:35] of this which is cool um this this is one thing about this scene so I'm talking about there's there's stuff that I really like and really get amped for and then stuff that I really don't like

[01:06:49] this is the the biggest probably example of things that I don't like in this movie and that is just like blatant iron ran philosophy like this is just straight up at least wrote and um I don't know

[01:07:02] if you've ever read at least shrug but it's pretty terrible yeah and so I got really upset like watching this in the theater like oh no yeah who is John Galt oh god yeah yeah that's yeah that's fair

[01:07:19] and that's what's like that's what's so uh at the end of this Tony Stark has one of the most Tony Stark lines which is also like one of my biggest detractors like personal philosophy wise

[01:07:33] from Tony Stark which is I've successfully privatized world peace um it's just like oh man okay Tony and just like an Atlas shrug it takes a a mgaffin that can never actually exist to make this story unfold so

[01:07:52] libertarian philosophy okay oh man oh man yeah coming from the uh from the wonder land that is Wyoming I'm sure you're super familiar with that oh yeah sorry to alienate our Wyoming listeners

[01:08:07] Wyoming listeners yeah like 16 people who may also be a guest here in like two two movies but you know here we are um so yeah a couple of things I noticed in here so as I mentioned I did go back and read

[01:08:24] a lot of the um demon in a bottle uh comics um and one thing I picked up on just in hammer is much older in the comic book continuity he's he's definitely far older than Tony Stark is his role

[01:08:44] in the comic books is basically as a bank role to the villains he's just a bank role he he bank roles his villains and so that it was we don't quite get that yet we'll get that throughout the

[01:08:57] rest of the movie but um we don't get that quite yet and another comic book reference that came up in this uh senate hearing was Tony says I'm not a joiner but I will consider secretary of defense

[01:09:08] this is a reference to in the comic continuity where Tony did actually become secretary of defense at one point so um anything else you guys picked up on during the that senate hearing I know it was it was jam

[01:09:23] Gary shambling off the chart also I love Gary yeah that's fair and that's man I will say for all of our listeners that have watched the MCU going back and watching this scene and seeing Gary shambling

[01:09:36] and and his senator show up uh man I don't know about you guys but that brought back some like I was like I know that guy and I know what he's gonna do and I don't like it.

[01:09:50] One other thing that kind of struck me so um when doing some research for the movie I guess there was a real kind of triangle of power approach between like Rob Dan Jr who is the star and Figey and

[01:10:02] Fabro and Rob Dan Jr insisted on this very kind of improv heavy approach which the screenwriter throw had to kind of like um and Figey and Fabro kind of had to kind of deal with but because he was the star

[01:10:18] and him trying to be loose and just this scene felt just kind of unfocused and weird to me you know I love Robert Downey Jr and I love but I did not listen there's some other scenes where you could just

[01:10:32] see like going to the Palcho just like wait what's happening here like what that's not the you can just tell if he's just like that's not the line what's happening and it just

[01:10:43] felt a little bit federal chaotic yeah that's fair that's fair and that's I will say that this scene also is where it drove home to me that it was actually kind of good that we got downsheetle I could

[01:10:53] not see Terrence Howard doing this scene though like especially with downsheetle's characterization of Rodey but I think the argued-manitive nature of Rodey um I just I have a hard time imagining Terrence Howard doing that so it's because it got such a slow like steady southern

[01:11:17] draw you know all Tony you know like that's there's you can't be you can't be witty and have banter with that yeah for sure for sure so we uh so back at home Tony fires up the Jarvis

[01:11:31] and they discuss reason events for analyzing his played in poisoning Jarvis quote blood toxicity 24% it appears the continued use of the Ironman suit is accelerating your condition I'm sorry I can't do a palpani sorry the advice is that he will have is also killing you pepper arrives

[01:11:52] the two argue about the their the his donation the modern art collection to the Boy Scouts organization then they're kind of arguing bickering around the current status stark industries and then Tony just has the brilliant idea hey I'm gonna point you as the new CEO and she's stunned

[01:12:09] quote I've actually given a fair amount of thought about my successor and then I realized it's you it's always been you quote which we will see in a later movie we cut to Russia and Ivan Vanco is

[01:12:21] handed a passport and it took it to the Monaco Grand Prix um by what I felt what what John Fevro and there was a member of the 10 rings um that was of handing him uh when we encountered in the first

[01:12:37] movie and then we're back to Malibu where we see a no-to-re public named Naly Rushman who arrives in order to have Tony officially signed pay for it to sign over his company to pepper and then

[01:12:49] we see Tony is sparring with happy and they both kind of lear creepily at the notary happy officer boxing lesson while Tony asks who she is and looks at the bio quote from pepper

[01:13:01] she is from legal and is a potentially very expensive sexual harassment lawsuit if you keep ogling her like that Naly forms to take down of happy before obtaining Tony's quote impression

[01:13:13] seen ends with Tony's hit stating I want one to which pepper simply says no um so there were a couple things in here that um we didn't the struck uh stood out for me one like the boxing

[01:13:30] notary scene makes no sense there's no like you don't have to like sign something and have it no rise to a point that's successor you just you just give them the job like so that part

[01:13:42] is everywhere I realize I had to shoehorn her in in the scene but completely makes no sense whatsoever um the other thing that and this is this uh speaks more to like the relationship between

[01:13:57] pepper Tony which evolves in this movie and future movies um I just felt this very odd like if this is the person you really care about like why are you backing on this other person like I could

[01:14:09] not I couldn't process it and so so for me it took a while before the relationships seem very cemented and real but um yeah and this is also another aspect where it's like oh this part does not

[01:14:22] age super duper well yeah I think I think part of that is because they're pulling from like 70s comics right and and Tony was a pretty traditional 70s playboy like going back to reading through those

[01:14:39] he's got a different girlfriend every issue and like you'd never see him break up with the other ones so definitely kind of the like lethario moving through lots of women kind of situation

[01:14:53] and for a long time in the comics uh pepper and happy work absolutely so I mean like they they made it so you know you never they didn't really go full love triangle with it but you know they

[01:15:05] they wanted to keep it open just in case maybe yeah favre wanted to work into that he could have a love scene with her there you go there you go you needed to get some of that group um yeah

[01:15:16] just you know things I hate about this movie I will also say uh that I don't know that this is speaking of group but the other thing that struck me in this rewatch so there's the first scene where

[01:15:32] they're in the garage where Tony and uh pepper and the garage Tony or peppers got the sniffles and Tony says wear a surgical mask until you're better hits so if I wrote that gun it is so different

[01:15:48] watch that scene in 2023 then it was to watch it in 2011 before we never considered the idea of wearing like masks in normal he's a futurist right I wrote it down I wrote it down right there pepper is an

[01:16:06] anti-mascar oh goodness yeah yeah yeah that was a that was a mess but it you know I think that was also the improv I don't know if like when it's cultural came to the set sick that day and that

[01:16:29] you know like we talked about a lot of this movie was improv so I'd imagine it was just like hey let's get on set let's get this shot and Iron Man or Robert Downey Jr was like yeah cool let's let me talk

[01:16:40] about how Gwen and Sik other than that I mean obviously we get black widows introduction cool cool little comic book tie um Natalie Rushman is actually a combo reference uh to black widows original

[01:16:58] comic book name which was Natalia Romanova and her common cover which was Nancy Rushman giving us Natalie Rushman so kind of a cool little combo reference there for sure the other thing I noted was

[01:17:14] that the character of Ivan Vanko is a combination of crimson dynamo who wears weaponry and armor and the super villain whip lash right who possesses the specifically designed acid whip and that his uh Anton Vanko was the original crimson dynamo in the comics and Boris Turganoff

[01:17:37] which is the name on the fake Russian passport is the second crimson dynamo so which I thought was kind of interesting and we see it on the passport and on his orange jumpsuit when we get to Malibu

[01:17:49] Romanova sorry yeah I oh man so I'll do this right here I am this is one of my biggest disappointments with this movie is we did not get a like actual crimson dynamo we got like whip lash

[01:18:07] who was very 70s like very 70s comic book villain who's just kind of this is sure at the time in in demon in the bottle he had Adam Antium Whips which is cool I guess but

[01:18:23] he's also just kind of one of those background villains that you just throw into a story but like crimson dynamo is like a significant villain and you basically didn't get him ever in the MCU because

[01:18:37] you through ways character on this weird whip lash combo character well I mean Iron Man's never really had a great villains gallery other than like Mandarin yeah you know so you weren't ever gonna get like a Joker or you know something that significant like spider

[01:18:58] man's got the he's got the real villains gallery in Marvel you know Iron Man's like I mean most people can't name three Iron Man villains even though there's been at least three in these movies

[01:19:10] yes right right so after signing over the after signing over the the company and black widow taking down happy we cut over to monoco so in monoco we're at the Grand Prix

[01:19:32] Tony and Pepper show up and start to mingle kind of Tony surprises Pepper in that he's hired Natalie Rushman as his assistant um they end up running into Justin Hammer with a return from

[01:19:49] Christine Everhart hammer's like yeah she's doing quite a big spread on me which is a funny little call back to the he spread that she did on Tony the last the previous movie

[01:20:07] Tony takes another blood toxicity test he's up to 53% and decides to do something reckless so he jumps into his race car himself um here he is so he decides to run the race he is

[01:20:27] ambushed by Anton Vaco who is wearing an arque actor powered suit himself playing with flash this scene is it man this is this is where the movie won me back

[01:20:40] after the Iron Man scene I was just like oh this is it bro this is so it's so yeah it's yeah it's it is really cool to to try and save Tony happy and Pepper decide to drive on to the race course

[01:20:55] in their in the Rolls Royce they deliver the suit case suit of armor Tony puts it on you're really cool suit up I love suit ups this one was a really cool one um they fight again it's

[01:21:11] a big it's a big tech on tech fight you know we do see that Tony is proven to not be invisible and thank oh hurts him right damages the armor and doesn't beat him but is definitely

[01:21:30] able to match him which so far in the world that hadn't happened um Vaco is captured put in jail Tony points out you know the technical issues with Vaco's armor but like Vaco says he made a god

[01:21:48] bleed people cease to believe in gods once they believe right you needed to do it in the accent no no I'm not even gonna accept and Zack Snyder's watching this writing down oh make god believe

[01:22:05] he also recognizes so Vaco also recognizes in Tony the play deem damage right he sees he sees but as soon as he sees what will you sure know as the high tech crossword puzzle um but

[01:22:22] knows that that's play deem poisoning so and he says hey Tony play deem in the chest painful way to die so yeah another great reference to the 70s comics with these suit case armor yes that's that is

[01:22:36] something I noted was like so it's actually funny in the 70s comics because like Tony is carrying his his briefcase everywhere there's a there's a scene in one of the issues he takes one of his

[01:22:48] girlfriends to the playboy club and he's got his briefcase just just into with what the I'm seeing it it's like no one suspicious of this guy just carrying a suitcase everywhere he goes

[01:23:00] we've got nuclear codes like it works for the president and it'll work okay yeah that's why also in this scene we did see our first now problematic cameo we got cameo from Elon Musk

[01:23:19] so Elon Musk is in monaco and uh tells to or Tony compliments him on the Merlin engines and tells Tony as an idea for an electric plane we all now know that he doesn't have an idea

[01:23:31] for an electric plane someone else has an idea that he's bought for an electric plane oh you on Musk is a genius yeah good I look at and see how many patents Elon Musk actually has been

[01:23:43] to target all the time with people like it's not him yep yeah yeah it's not he's charismatic he ain't it but sorry if I alienated a listener with that comment I don't know that I'm sorry like I'm gonna

[01:23:59] go on record and say that like yeah we are not opposed to Tesla sponsorship so hit us up well the I the cross section of Elon Musk fanboys and and Zack Snyder Justice League fanboys

[01:24:16] in the last five minutes alone coming after you guys is gonna be really good yeah that's fair that's fair I like you cursed I loved the fight scene I'm not quite sure how he wasn't like crippled by

[01:24:28] being run over a couple times or Janigan's the wall by uh by happy I but the opening like the scene where they arrive it just there's so much ad-living and this is one of the parts I mentioned

[01:24:40] before going to potra looks uncomfortable in the scene like almost and you in which you're in a walk situation you almost feel like I'm just walking away from this lunatic and doing all this

[01:24:50] ad-living stuff just stick to the lines we're here all day um but isn't her own contribution just screaming yeah screaming and throwing the suitcase that's about all she does yeah I love happy in this

[01:25:04] scene though as well he just the sheer panic in his face throughout the whole scene yeah just sums up happy hogan I absolutely love happy I do everything he does every every like scene he ever has I

[01:25:21] love him yeah yeah yeah the other um the other thing that I thought was funny in this especially in the light of like going back and listening or going back and reading some of the

[01:25:33] comics was in the script they use hammer calling Tony Anthony is like a device to show how little he knows Tony right but what's really funny is the in the timeline where this is like set in the comics

[01:25:52] that's what Tony's primarily known as even to his friends he's Anthony which is just it was so funny because I so I rewatch this um I didn't do it three times like we did with incredible Hulk because

[01:26:05] behind the scenes information we're recording at uh we're recording much earlier than we would normally because uh if you didn't pick up on it yet Curtis and Grant are across the pond they're they're

[01:26:17] over in England so we're recording at night for them but early in the morning for us over here stateside um so you know I I didn't get my third watch in but my second watch which was my note

[01:26:32] taking watch of this movie was right in the middle of me reading the comics so that was like front of mind I was like that it's funny now looking back at it that like something that was normal in the

[01:26:44] comics kind of was used as a premise for a joke almost in the script and then the other thing that I wanted to point out here is another comic tie so setting this in Monaco uh uh so setting

[01:26:57] this in Monaco basically brings this into the prelude to the demon in the bottle uh or demon in a bottle uh Tony goes to it's so in that um series of comics uh Ironman so at this point Tony is

[01:27:14] still maintaining a secret identity Ironman is hacked by Justin Hammer and kills a uh kills an ambassador and Tony realizes that that's you know that's what had happened he had been hacked by Justin

[01:27:31] Hammer so he he kind of backtraces the hack he and goes to Monaco where Justin Hammer is um and is attacked by a army of uh super villains um this army includes with flash so wayplash is part of this army

[01:27:51] also include in the in this army uh which kind of cracked me up uh is some super villains that if you are current on the MCU these names are gonna crack you up um so porky pine is also in that super villain

[01:28:07] army and so is leapfrog uh so we didn't get a grip it in ribbit yet but you know we'll get that down the road um so kind of a cool tie in there. We um as Tony this takes us to Tony pepper on the plane

[01:28:24] flying back from Monaco we see centers turns on a MSMBC spreading fear about the Ironman threat pepper ass Tony what's wrong and says he doesn't want to go home the bunch of camps is birthday

[01:28:36] part in go to Europe meanwhile Venko is busted out of prison by Justin Hammer who wants to use his knowledge of the uh the uh the arch reactors and his dad's technology to crush stark industries he meets with

[01:28:51] Hammer in an airplane hanger which is actually owned by uh Elon Musk uh true story to discuss Hammer's funding vankos tech development uh we then cut back to Tony he's researching Anton Vanko who was a Soviet scientist who defected in the US 1963 was deported 67 rode your rides warrants

[01:29:12] Tony that the government is gonna roll up Pacific Coast Highway and take his suits rodey helps to swap out yet another play deem cell and expresses concern over Tony's health then we go back we see Hammer meeting Vanko who was supposed to be dead in his facilities and

[01:29:27] as Vanko to help him topple the Ironman top top Ironman Vanko quote no problem man sorry man how to get that in there uh my brother's getting my birthday party and then uh uh now the freshman arrives

[01:29:42] to ask Tony what watch he wants to wear the uh the combination of Vanko's tech and the increasing played employees and I mean this is where we differ from the uh demon in a bottle storyline he

[01:29:53] he drinks um not because he is depressed um but on this evening he's drinking to kind of celebrating his birthday but also kind of you know believing that the poor the poison he's pushing

[01:30:06] what he believes to be his final birthday party and then there's this uh exchange between him and Rushman if this is your last birthday party how would you celebrate it quote I would do whatever

[01:30:15] I want to do with him ever I want to do it in seniana so uh honey she's honey pottening I the so the um the character we see a little bit more the character of of of of I'm Vanko

[01:30:34] the I want my bird quote which I love my book um I guess that uh Mickey Rork who was originally offered just 250 thousand dollars for the role he had several stylistic demands quote I'll do it

[01:30:49] but I have to have my hair in a samurai bun I have to speak in a Russian accent and I have to have a bird on my shoulder any quote I would like to be a pirate in this movie yeah

[01:31:00] yeah I read that that was so Mickey Rork gave an interview where he said that was to make the character less one dimensional he didn't want a one dimensional character which apparently a bird just

[01:31:13] adds a dimension for you um another one plus one bird plus one yep another note here uh uh so Vanko so Anton Vanko's um defection date actually reflects his first comic book appearance

[01:31:34] so 63 was also the first year that uh Anton Vanko appeared in the comic books so kind of cool little tie in there um the other thing I picked up so we talked about technology a lot in this podcast

[01:31:47] one of the funny things with the technology here was one they were just trying to make him look more techy but Tony Stark has nothing but glass panes as monitors which I think partially as techy

[01:31:58] but also it feels like almost lazy filmmaking to me because it's like you don't have to worry about the monitor blocking your shot at that point uh it's just you can shoot through the monitor

[01:32:11] but it looks so cool oh so techy and so cool um other than that uh the other the other line from you quoted uh you quoted uh Natalie Rushman here the other line that I thought was so

[01:32:26] honeypotting if you will uh was the is that dirty enough for you uh she brings a martini oh that not long make me uncomfortable. yeah this is this only Ranks is like maybe number six

[01:32:43] on the cringe worthy moments in this movie like we'll uh yeah but that scene yeah I just wanted like do like do not always pour alcohol on deliver watches is that thick through job like didn't

[01:32:55] the other thing and this is this is a minor thing but if you watch the scene with uh just hammer where they're in the airport hangar look at his palms they're stained and darker like

[01:33:06] like the there was some sort of aggressive spray tan and his palms of his hands are like almost orange white that's funny that whole scene knows is just shows how like incompetent hammering is it any it's absolutely any i love it oh no yeah it's so great

[01:33:27] where you're showing the the the team up of Hammer and Vanco where you've got the brains that can rival Tony Stark and then the money yep yeah to back it up but almost to try and show

[01:33:40] that they are a legitimate threat to Ironman in 20 star together they make one Tony exactly exactly yeah it's but that whole i've got a sweet tooth oh just ridiculous yeah and you have a sweet tooth for Tony Stark yeah oh so bad

[01:34:00] so yeah bad right okay from here we move into uh the the birthday party so we see Tony drunk out of control um pepper is peppers pretty frustrated she shows uh the rowdy shows up and pepper

[01:34:19] like he's in there they they go in they check it out Tony's peeing in the suit showing off its filtration abilities and Tony says if anybody wants the door or if anybody doesn't like it pepper

[01:34:36] there's the door and like shoots through the beautiful glass stairway he has and um and so essentially he's trying to do a party trick he's shooting all kinds of stuff he makes a sweet Gallagher reference by shooting a watermelon uh he's getting belligerent towards roadie who's trying

[01:34:57] to stop him um and you know roadie's like dude you're not this you're not responsible enough to be this weapon um the on reason uh Tony you know is getting crazy and and so roadie heads down

[01:35:13] stairs picks up the mark too suit um it from the basement and we get to see a really cool i think really cool suit on suit fight um which is really really fun to watch um and ends in a stalemate

[01:35:31] where we see a big explosion Tony's days uh and roadie takes off with the uh mark too suit um i don't know man that that's that whole fight just makes me sad really i remember watching it and be

[01:35:46] him like this is a dude just beaten up his drunk friend like it's cool don't keep me wrong but it's it's very sad yeah i think i think were they to make this movie today the tone would be very different

[01:35:59] i think where we were in the MCU it still had to be pretty happy go lucky it had to be pretty light and fluffy kind of brain candy um but i think uh where we are today where we're in a post it

[01:36:12] tunnels world and uh we can do a little bit more seriousness in our Marvel movies uh this this probably would have had a much darker tone for this fight um we do get a suit up we get our one

[01:36:28] of our few non-tony suitups so i was disappointed though in this suit suit up because it's really like you see the screws going into the feet and that's like it when uh when uh roadie is

[01:36:42] suiting up in the mark too so i have a question maybe i'm maybe i'm missing something but how does so two things one like how does the suit work like he doesn't have an archry actor right because

[01:36:56] if he had an archry actor then Tony in the last movie could just walked over grab an archry actor i wanted to suit right yeah and then how does how does he know how to use it like the we saw

[01:37:06] in the first one um with iron monger you saw in this movie just like dudes getting the suit now to make them how to fly and fight like i don't I don't understand it yeah i think maybe

[01:37:18] the suits got like an auto pilot function yeah there you go i mean maybe maybe it's meant to be taken from the comic continuity where it's like uh cybernetic almost it's uh it's like it responds

[01:37:30] to your thoughts so it acts as a extension of you essentially um i guess that that's the suspension of disbelief i'll take do you think uh you think the Elon Musk put the auto drive function into the suit

[01:37:45] there you go there you go i hope not at least at least at least at least at least at like leases no like you know uh Musk attack and yeah in the iron man uh universe 7 horrible

[01:37:59] there's also a uh cameo uh throughout this scene um so DJ am is the DJ for the party the movie actually ended up um uh being in memorial of DJ am he died between this time where he filled

[01:38:17] or film this and the release of the movie um i'm a big blink 182 fan and DJ am was a really close friend of Travis Barkers uh so as a fan you know a blink 182 and getting to be kind

[01:38:32] of a fan of their uvra if you will uh i was a fan of DJ am i was sat in by his passing so it's really

[01:38:38] cool when i went to see iron man too to see him show up um and get to see him here and i will say one of my favorite uh Tony lines in this scene was uh and and i'm pretty sure this was a like

[01:38:53] bad take that they just left in because it made him seem drunk uh was goldstein give me a fat beat to beat my buddies as to um uh pretty great um and then you're cracking up too he can't yeah

[01:39:07] yeah he can't keep it straight um and then yeah to to tie this back to the comics real quick um like you mentioned differing from demon in the bottle a little bit what drove Tony to drink instead

[01:39:18] of him dying uh which is what's driving him to drink here uh what drove him to drink in the comics was actually obadastane uh hypnotized his then girlfriend to kind of like break up with him um and

[01:39:32] that's what led Tony to get really drunk blust up oh i just read this one last night he went around man hat and breaking every billboard for booze because apparently he was mad at booze

[01:39:51] he's mad at the idea of being yeah and then he fights like uh i think it was machine man came to visit him at like in a friendly gesture and Tony fights him and roadie gets back from where

[01:40:02] he was and roadie's like oh this guy is too drunk to go deal with an iron man level threat so that's when roadie suits up in the comics for the first time um so kind of a cool parallel there uh

[01:40:14] foreshore uh and then yeah i was gonna say we we our next scene we see a hungover Tony eating donuts at Randy's donuts which I guess is a famous donut shop like my absolute favorite shots

[01:40:31] in all of the movie history is him sitting in that donut oh my if i could get a tattoo of that i would i love it yeah i think this honestly not to jump ahead but this might be

[01:40:44] my favorite scene of the movie um like low key you know i mean the fights in the great but um we see Nick Fury director Sheel arrived uh Fury reveals the Natalie Rushman is actually one of his agents

[01:40:56] in the touch realman off and then there's a fun bit of dialogue between the three of them Nick Fury says quote you've been very busy you made your girl your CEO you're given away all

[01:41:07] your stuff you let your friend fly with if you're sued now if i did no better and Tony Stark shoots back you didn't know better didn't give it to me took it and Nick Fury says whoa whoa whoa he took it

[01:41:17] your iron man and he just took it that little brother walked in here kicked your ass and took your suit is that possible? Ah that's great fantastic and then they they go you know Tony Nick Fury goes on

[01:41:30] you know you've become a problem I have to deal with contrary to believe you were not the center my universe i bigger problems in the southwest region to deal with you know and then the scene goes on um he talks about how he's looked first suitable replacement for

[01:41:46] a medium of triter combination um you know and then Nick Fury drops the well i'm here to tell you haven't tried them all dot dot dot uh we cut back to Ivan vanco at hammer having discussion over

[01:41:59] birds and drones before we cut back to roadie sharing the Iron Man suit with the general meat who orders it to share it with with hammer so he can weaponize it for the Stark Expo

[01:42:10] and we see Fury telling start that quote the artcraft was a stepping stone the how we're Stark was gonna kick off Andrew race it was going to dwarf the arms race be a fury explains that uh

[01:42:20] vanco who worked for his dad wanted commercialized technology get rich and was deported the Soviet unit and the later setbira and then Fury tells Tony that he was the only person with the

[01:42:30] means and else to finish what he started in order to solve the mystery of his heart by finding a new power source um and he also drops a fact that Howard Stark was a founding member of shield so a couple

[01:42:41] things in this scene so this is to me where this felt like an MCU movie where we see characters and threads and it's kind of going in different directions if you will but um one of the things

[01:42:56] learned about you know is that John Favreau had a lot of friction with the Marvel higher ups because Marvel pushed for this shield sub-plot in order to establish the greater MCU and events

[01:43:08] the vendors at the expense of what I would describe as like the coherence of this argument to plot and so Marvel eventually constantly intervened to the point it was requiring scriptary rights on the film that they have shooting and um basically Favreau was very frustrated and though

[01:43:27] he would produce Iron Man 3 and continue to play happy in future films he turned down directing based on his experiences in the film and he was like I'm done with this so um and I guess later

[01:43:37] he made a film called Sheffs which was an analogy of his creative struggle he had with Marvel so it still works with him but didn't um didn't want to direct anymore. I'll have to go back and rewatch

[01:43:49] sheff I I loved that or love that movie um and but I did not know that about its like analogy for his trouble so I'll have to go back and rewatch that now. Yeah and this this scene

[01:44:00] really shows that this is part of what they call Fury's Big Week which was the the week of Hulk Iron Man 2 and Thor all taking place right at the same time. Yeah so yeah that's pretty cool

[01:44:14] for sure for sure and yeah and I I remember the Southwest region line was such a fun drop at the time it you know not knowing not having like announcements of what was coming next means that at least

[01:44:29] for the like next hour or so until we get to the after credits scene you are like speculating who's in the Southwest who we get next. Obviously the after credits he answered that but it was kind of a fun little speculation drop for a second there. For sure.

[01:44:48] So then from there we return to the airplane hanger where the military has started to disassemble the suit. Hammer advertises basically every weapon he has including the X-wife which is a bunker buster that will buck bus the bunker under the buck or you just busted.

[01:45:09] Oh this scene is so great. You can just eat every line of this on every bit of scenery is chewed. I love it. So good, so good and then we get back to Balibu where Tony is examine the contents

[01:45:24] of a suitcase that was his dad's blueprints articles, starcino books, reals of film, Tony heads out to starc headquarters. We we see like this is the scene where the allergic to strawberries lying came from he buys strawberries on his way and gives them to pepper she's allergic to

[01:45:49] um we do see that she's pretty fed up with it and as he leaves he notices the diorama of the starc expo 1974 which he takes with him kind of hilariously carried in his Audi A8 with the top down

[01:46:09] because that's the only way it's going to fit. He takes it with him back home. Does a scan realizes hey there's a theoretical new element structure here in the way that dad

[01:46:21] laid this out. Nearly destroys the lab trying to create a new element. He builds it he builds a super cool. I super glad he's living right. Yeah, right. Meanwhile in Hammerland

[01:46:38] Venko is working on his own suit gets call from V. It's call from Hammer well he's well hammer is golfing and he tells Hammer that the drones aren't ready they'll be able to make demonstration

[01:46:54] no fly no shoot can make salute. Can make salute. I can make salute like that. So Hammer warns Venko you know to make sure that he's good on the agreement where he's

[01:47:09] going to go back to being a dead man. So in this scene the assistant to pepper who lets Tony into the office is actually as established in one of the like campaigning comics to this movie

[01:47:23] is actually Mrs. Arbagast who is the longtime assistant of Tony Stark. So kind of a cool comic tie and there she also hired black widow as the notary or hired her into legal

[01:47:41] in that campaigning comic. So kind of a cool little piece there. I will also say Howard Stark's time on film here again drives home the Walt Disney parallels he's drinking like a scot I'm

[01:47:57] going to say it's a scotch mist because I was Walt Disney's favorite drink but very much kind of the Walt Disney parallels come back again and my favorite line of the movie I'd like to personally show you my ass is honored by Howard Stark here.

[01:48:18] Yeah a lot of good stuff here cool cameo Bill O'Reilly shout out to Bill O'Reilly. We'll do a live. We'll do a lot. I'm cracking up. So one of the things one question I have and I think I know the answer but like

[01:48:38] the very elaborate and I thought it was very cool the whole Epcot totally agree with you Ryan on the whole Walt Disney connection. The question I have is why didn't he just write it down? It's no

[01:48:51] book. Why did he have to hide it in the diorama that diorama gets thrown away? I didn't I didn't quite I mean I get the part where he didn't want to write it down so that the government

[01:49:00] would eventually capture you know not to capture both of them like come into come into possession of his property would have the notebook would have the answer in there. It's like guests at the

[01:49:08] answer but I thought that was you know it was it was it was fun for him to do and I do like we see that tech you know which where he like throws something on a like a non-existent screen just

[01:49:24] in the air to kind of move through the ground with gesturing his hands which I think is pretty cool. By the way, the shield that we see in the that Colson Hands Tony Stark is not obviously

[01:49:37] Captain America shield which is with him. It's just a it's a replica I guess in the which that was the the big thing in Iron Man one was there was that easter egg where people thought

[01:49:52] that that was Captain America shield behind him and I remember that going around on like you know comic book movie you know sites for months like oh my god look at this this is this easter egg

[01:50:03] this is Captain America's coming on and so they had to throw that in in the next movie going like no yeah this is just a piece of garbage we found yeah um the other thing I like the other call back

[01:50:16] there's there's a lot of parallels between Venko in this movie and Tony Stark in the first one so we knew he's pounding out the armor just like in the first one and then the kind of also

[01:50:28] the his delay seems like similar to Tony Stark's delay dimension of the Jericho up and for the 10 rings in the first time and it built the Mark one we uh we cut to see Tony receiving a call from

[01:50:39] Venko who is shocked to learn these to live and threatens Tony Tony Dawn's new arc reactor and instructs Jarvis to build a new suit Tony others I think maybe my least favorite line which I know is completely improv tastes like coconut metal oh wow yeah just pretty horrible

[01:51:01] cut to Stark expo hammers presenting a demonstration of a new line of autonomous humanoid drone soldiers as well as the customized Iron Man soup piloted by Rodi aka the war machine suit

[01:51:14] Tony flies to the expo to warn Rodi before that what's that before that can we talk about the dance oh yeah I this is second time I brought it up that dance that hammer does when he's on his way

[01:51:26] out to the expo just bust in a move is the best part of this movie it is my favorite scene I was grant and I were watching it earlier today and I made grant rewind the movie so I could watch it

[01:51:39] I was like no no I have to watch this so good that is uh that is a callback to um Steve Balmer who would do like famously do like little dances um it's great and it was completely ad-libbed

[01:51:53] which I absolutely like absolutely love that that's just kiss one album ad-lib which I really appreciate we uh so we see you know Venko is hacked in the drones and the war machine suit big CGI

[01:52:08] fight ensues between Iron Man and War Machine in the drones as pepper has hammer rusted for clapping Venko and it has to be her use to hammer industries to confront Venko Natasha defeats a number of guards before discovering the Venko has escaped but Natalie's

[01:52:23] able to restore Rodi's control over suit Iron Man and War Machine destroy the hammer drones before being confronted by Venko who's now wearing and improved suit kind of shades of Iron Monger ultimately Tony and Rhodes defeat Venko but not before he sets off the self-durched to truck mechanism

[01:52:41] in a suit and blows up all the drones Tony somehow finds pepper saves him for the drone self-destructs pepper quits her job the shirt kissed and rooftop sure by Rodi before he flies off

[01:52:55] I don't know if you just say shared by Rodi are we saying this was a three like Rodi they were triple kiss me because the roof type of chair the kiss was not a two-be-clear with

[01:53:06] venture and that problem so I think so a few things you know you have to assume or was suspended disbelief or a couple of different things knowing that Tony was that Venko's work

[01:53:22] for hammer that Venko was going there obviously built sorts of climax I like can we talk about the cameo we alluded to earlier John Favroson Max who is at the start expo who stands up to the hammer drone yeah yeah the hammeroid if you will

[01:53:40] the hammeroid terrible but yeah yeah we get the kid who will come back will come back in civil war well the should be just should be just mentioned who the kid is supposed to be

[01:53:59] sure go for it all right so the kid is uh I guess baggy before the release of Spiderman home coming told Tom Holland that that that little kid was actually Peter Parker but when asked

[01:54:11] baguess and bigus because apparently if he did confirm that Spiderman was in the movie it would require Disney and Marvel to pay additional money to Sony for the parents of a character did non-sonic project that's hilarious that's what it's got to stay as a fan theory

[01:54:29] let me ask a quick question for the for the group this the fight scene between Natasha and the and the guards on issue makes a way to feinco like is that the best fight scene in the movie

[01:54:41] or top three like what's everyone's favorite fights oh man it's it's well okay so that I can see why people don't like this one because there's a lot less action in it but I think the action scenes

[01:54:54] in this in this movie are bigger and better than the last one so like when you say is that a top three action scene in this movie well there's only like three actions scenes in this movie so like yeah

[01:55:06] probably is we've got our members with blush right we've got Tony versus Rodie you've got the Tash and the guards happy in a guard I guess that's a fight scene and then it's just

[01:55:18] Iron Man War Machine versus Drone's Whiplash like the the fight between the Iron Man War Machine in the drone is pretty cool the killbox scene is it yeah so I like I was on cloud nine

[01:55:31] leaving that leaving this movie because of that yeah yeah it arguing over who the big gun was yeah yeah and like the failure of the x-wife it just bounces off and goes armor just

[01:55:45] oh my god hammer attack my bust is bunker but I will say Natasha's fight is really cool I would say it's probably the best martial fight like martial arts fight it's not it's obviously not a

[01:55:59] shooting fight like all the tech fights are and so it is cool it was a really cool introduction to like black widow as a badass in the MCU and we did get to see her strike a pose we got to see her

[01:56:17] be such a pose yeah he's such a poseer let me ask you guys real fast what do you think the space force drones would have looked like oh gosh oh gosh all I can imagine for the space force drones

[01:56:35] is there was like the interplanetary armor that Tony had that like it like oh yeah had shoulder pads that went up to the head and like looked like a little arrow and that's also looks like a rocket

[01:56:46] yeah yeah that's all I can imagine another cameo in this scene that we can talk a little bit easier about is Justin Thoreau so the writer actually played one of the cops that comes to arrest

[01:57:01] and then also debriefs with pepper one of the NYPD officers was Justin Thoreau so he got to be in his own movie quick question worst wig in the movie scarlet shaham i mean the scarlet shahantons

[01:57:18] wig here for um vankos uh Mickey works i it's scarlet shahantons the answer is scarlet shahantons because i'm not gonna lie i'm not fully certain that that vankos was a wig also knowing Mickey

[01:57:38] Rark and in the way that he he gets so like so you think method act because he I didn't read about it it's been a lot of rush in like he probably learned how to use a laptop for the role right

[01:57:50] i mean he famously tore his own tooth out for the wrestler so yeah that's fair enough then we were awesome yeah and and how dare you even say that anything about scarlet Johansson looked bad

[01:58:05] no door to my sister oh man look bad i just said that that wig is remarkable i will say that's a note that i made during this scene so during the scene uh happy's like driving um happy's driving

[01:58:19] black widow two uh two hammer tech and she's getting dressed into her black widow cat suit and she's in her bra and like happy's almost crashing i have to know i made here was like the amount of

[01:58:36] times that they beat us over the head with hey scarjo's hot right in this movie between the like modeling pictures in the boxing scene and uh is that dirty enough for you um oh my gosh just

[01:58:50] the hey hey hey fanboys you like scarjo right scarjo's hot right like just do you think did you think that favreo like mess that scene up a couple of times just so they had to read it

[01:59:02] oops oh my god oh my god again man oh what i guess we'll talk about this in the secret show but the ladies that favreo has has either cast himself uh next to or has ended up next to in the

[01:59:20] MCU oh jealousy jealousy do you ever give her wonder uh because about this time was when um tropic thunder came out do you ever wonder what this movie would look like if instead of recasting

[01:59:36] his dawn she'd be they just had Robert Dunnie junior pulled double double shift as like Robert Dunnie junior and Kirk Lazarus from oh no I'm just a dude playing to do disguises another dude

[01:59:54] we're in a middle suit of a dude so yeah now i want to rewatch him when we're getting a thing oh no so now so the fights ended we had a three-way kiss on the suit on the roof um

[02:00:16] and the the fury is debriefing Tony and let's him know what uh Natasha thought of him basically she she wants the iron her her her conclusion is the iron man suit uh yes is in the

[02:00:33] Avengers Tony is a no um the and so Tony wants to hire or i'm sorry fury wants to hire Tony merely as a consultant which we saw referenced last month when we talked about the consultant the

[02:00:48] marble one shot um Tony says that he would wave his fee and exchange for a small favor turns out that small favor is to make senator stern's uh present him with a metal uh him and ready

[02:01:01] a metal um and uh as it is presented to Tony we get a line of you deserve this and then he pushes the badge too far through and it and the prick's Tony and uh stern's goes oh sorry funny how

[02:01:18] annoying a little prick can be isn't it um so fun little uh ending that debrief scene the debrief scene where they have the big map behind them i remember looking at that so many times

[02:01:33] that you know when that we were with us like oh there's one in the middle of the ocean it's Atlantis and there's one in Africa oh that's Wakanda I'm like on to a freaking out man yeah yeah

[02:01:43] I think i think we all studied it like the supporter film right we're like trying to like oh exactly let's figure out what it was it was great it was great and again another this that

[02:01:54] being one of the scenes it does again probably push by marble higher ups but makes it feel like an MCU movie right it's just a great a thread it's a it's a we're going to see connected you know

[02:02:05] years from now yep all right uh so um that that does it for the main movie as this art tradition will cover the after credits scenes after the credits so sick around after the credits we'll talk about the after credits scene so some closing thoughts

[02:02:26] why do you guys think and we'll start with uh Curtis and Grant here why you guys think this movie was important to the MCU is important to the MCU what what's the main takeaway of this movie

[02:02:39] oh well I think that the the the main takeaway of this movie is showing that there is an expanded universe it's much bigger like Ironman one was a self-contained story that's all that ever had to be

[02:02:50] Hulk was a pretty self-contained story too um you know if if these movies didn't take off it would have just been a really cool like watch every now and again this was the first movie where

[02:03:00] they started pushing that agenda of we are building to something it's like it's like you said David it's the uh the spark of the MCU that's exactly what it is you're 100% right this is where the

[02:03:11] MCU was really born so I think that's why it's important absolutely I couldn't agree more say better myself David anything to add to that one no I agree that I mean I think it's exactly it

[02:03:23] the other thing is we see some of the government anti-government sentiment that we will see in future movies that's a kind of a little layer of kernel and relates back to the comic books as well

[02:03:34] all right yeah so it's really agree yeah uh especially as I said earlier about the some of the themes that are introduced about like heroes of celebrities and and uh yeah the introduction of so many characters uh it's it's definitely the spark yeah absolutely blue the

[02:03:54] MCU up yep all right now um so the next the next questions edited a little bit from our previous shows what was either whichever one you feel strongest about either your favorite or least favorite

[02:04:10] scene of the movie will start over with Curtis and Grant so again as said anything we've happy hooking in it like happy he's just he's you can just see it in his the portrayal that he's

[02:04:28] so far out of his depth but he's just trying his best but no matter what he's doing like it's like he's just happy to be there yeah yeah like the the happy time reference and like you know

[02:04:43] what you did I'm having happy time in the boxy ring just yeah it's so great I love happy yeah favorite scene um I mean it feels kind of cheap to say the the the climax of the movie

[02:04:59] is my favorite scene but that killbox scene is everything I wanted it's everything I wanted from an Ironman movie they're they're back to back whipping just smoking those drones with like all these

[02:05:12] different high tech weapons and stuff I remember just being on cloud nine is an Ironman fan boy watching that and thus I have to say that's probably my favorite um and least favorite yeah the Iron

[02:05:22] Rand scene terrible off that's poor that's fair except for Gary Shandling yeah that's fair I I wholeheartedly agree that that the killbox scene was I'm gonna also say it was my favorite um I know

[02:05:38] that's cheap and that that cheats the listener out of an extra favorite scene so instead uh so I'll say that was my favorite but uh second favorite follow up to that actually I

[02:05:50] I know it's a dumb scene but man I love hammer sales pitch like his sales pitch of all the weapons and the like which one do you want and then he and wrote his just answered all of it

[02:06:02] I could watch that scene just on repeat it's hilarious to me I don't know this is so good you least favorite just I mean if you just if you just cut out all the cringe worthy stuff like that'd be good

[02:06:17] but you know you guys nailed I think we're the best scenes for sure fair enough well uh next up our MVP of the movie and I'm gonna pass this to Grant first because I

[02:06:31] have a feeling I know what his answer is gonna be here but what was your MVP for this movie so I've already said like happy is my favorite moment but Jason Jason Hammer just an hammer yeah just

[02:06:46] as um you know just everything he does just shows how utterly incompetent he is like it's such a great character um yeah it's just ultimately terrible I love I love um what's his name goodness gracious what's the actor's name that plays Justin Hammer

[02:07:11] oh Sam Rockwell Sam Rockwell thank you very much fantastic actor and everything I've ever seen him in granted that's only been like four movies but like every time I see Sam Rockwell in a movie moon a moon was fantastic um who is the best

[02:07:26] part of galaxy quest which is one of my favorite movies ever yeah but like he's so good and just and Hammer makes this movie I I want them to bring him back so bad like Vanco's dead fine just

[02:07:38] and Hammer shall alive bring him back let's go for sure for sure and I have a reason that he's gonna be so as well yes he was in the short yep we've um uh in the one shot yep in the

[02:07:52] one shot uh oh what was that one called he held the king he's in prison yeah held it again that's the one yeah yeah and then I love him bring let's give an armor war

[02:08:03] as tv show let's go yeah yeah I mean it's been announced it has been announced that armor wars is coming so I'm hoping I'm hoping that that that we get to see uh some some sweet hammer action there

[02:08:18] turn it to him or tell you he's your MVP Curtis who's your MVP to the movie I mean if I can't say Justin Hammer uh Elon Musk no there you go no Gary Shandling Gary Shandling if I can't say

[02:08:32] Justin Hammer also Gary Shandling he's every scene he's in his hilarious that's fair as as senator Stearns yeah senator Stearns he oh yeah fantastic I just love him so much you such a prick yeah all right David who you got

[02:08:53] parrot parrot my boy I would have to say uh Don Sheetle that's not it yeah like he uh there was no in the first time man there was I didn't detect

[02:09:08] a lot of chemistry between him and Terrence Howard and I think he's a nice balance to to Tony and you could feel like a real like friendship and chemistry between the two actors

[02:09:20] and his from his entrance to him uh suiting up his warm machine I loved him the movie he was great yeah that that's that's super fair um man you guys all you guys took like most of the really good ones

[02:09:37] so many options though there's so many great options yeah i'm gonna have to go in this one i'm gonna have to go with with happy I know I know we already talked about happy scenes but like

[02:09:51] I think um you know in the first Iron Man movie happy was kind of a background character but really here he he got to get a little bit of shine right he got his fight

[02:10:04] where you got to see the boxing scene which was silly but still super fun so I'm gonna give my MVP to happy you uh i think to Grancer to come it like he is like genuinely like devoted friend

[02:10:17] of Tony like he goes to save his life on the on the on the race track in monica like most most you know employees wouldn't do that so i great like happy was it was a great character and added

[02:10:30] you know adds to the you know the relation of the overall MCU quite a bit because we'll see him future stuff as well absolutely all right so uh i i know where i rank this one right so so

[02:10:43] putting in mind that we're ranking three movies right now so we're ranking Iron Man 1 incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 um for me i would put this between Iron Man 1 and incredible Hulk

[02:10:58] i think this is better than Hulk but not as good as Iron Man 1 um and i will say overall because we're in the first phase here so so you know it kind of gets silly to rank three movies

[02:11:12] overall my guess is going to be i'm going to place Iron Man 2 somewhere in the middle third right we're at 30ish movies in the MCU as of recording so that means it's in the middle 10 for me it's

[02:11:26] it's not in that bottom 10 i i don't think it's in the bottom 10 um movies for me but it's also definitely not in the top 10 um i would put it somewhere in that middle 10 movies that kind of uh

[02:11:38] 10 to 20 range um how about how about uh grant and Curtis where where would you rank it and what was your overall impression oh yeah so definitely agree because everything you just said so uh yes definitely

[02:11:54] a mid tier movie overall and definitely the mid tier from the three that you've reviewed so far yeah for those three hundred percent it's the middle one but like i think i would put it in like

[02:12:08] the high middle it may not be top 10 it might be top 15 for me though there that's fair how don't you David the tough one uh because when you look at the other properties and there's some

[02:12:23] bangers out there right and so you have to start saying okay what are the you know what you know what are the 10 worst movies and worst is all well because i love them all they're all you know

[02:12:35] really you know they're all great to watch i'm going to put it right now it's kind of on the cusp of the middle 10 bottom 10 i think just because there are some really really great films coming

[02:12:46] out but if i had gun in my head it had to pick when i would say bottom third but that does not mean it's a bad movie it's no electric right i'll just say that that's fair that's fair um would you

[02:13:01] David and this one i'm i as i was watching this i was trying to figure out where you would rank this do you rank this above or below incredible hook it's a it's above incredible hook um it's it's not

[02:13:15] a humongous gap for me just because i felt like on rewatch incredible hook on first rewatch was actually not as bad as i originally remembered um i'm into it was about the same some of the stuff doesn't

[02:13:27] hold up as well the cgia looks really good we got the spark of the MCU which is really really important so i would definitely put it um above the Hulk for sure but not some first one fair enough fair enough

[02:13:40] all right well that does it for our episode thank you Kurdistan grant for joining us this week or this month um big big big big thank you's any closing remarks from you guys uh none i think i'm good to go

[02:13:54] I just say give us a follow please listen to the throw and dice podcast if you're into gaming um you can also find my other podcast which is Ocotta shorts which is about new Japan pro wrestling uh if

[02:14:22] and um come and find us come and talk to us if you uh want to listen to us uh if you if you enjoy or particular brand of whimsy and you want to get more fart jokes for free uh come and

[02:14:32] find us on throw and dice pod yeah we're definitely as you guys who love to chat nerd stuff true nice nice well thank you guys um remember to check out puny pod social media as

[02:14:44] as well uh like i mentioned earlier we do chat a little bit on the discord for ears up that link is down in the show notes um our there's also linked to the merch that i mentioned earlier in the

[02:14:56] there's also one other link that i want to mention here um as we talked about we don't get super spoilery in this show but on the ears up patreon feed we do release what we call our

[02:15:10] super secret spoiler show where we do get spoilery we usually have a beer we usually talk about uh who neck cage should be in this movie uh we also rank the facial hair because i am your uh resident

[02:15:23] pro facial hair person uh so definitely uh give those a check um and other than that thank you all for listening so so much uh join us again next month uh when we get into the MC used first

[02:15:40] journey into mystery thore and as we always say puny pod will return all right so we did have a really cool after crediting in this movie um so in this movie the

[02:16:32] after credits scene um is kind of at the same time as the debrief of uh Tony um and we cut to to new mexico where filth close and has been uh re assigned and uh we see a big ol crater and we

[02:16:50] pan down and we see the handle of the cloud sword from uh final f- no i'm just kidding uh we see a very specific hammer uh which uh deems it's it's wielder worthy or not um and

[02:17:08] just a hammer exactly MC hammer and we hear sir we found it um and at that point i remember because i was in a midnight showing and i was around a bunch of nerds i just remember cheering

[02:17:26] everybody was stoked that we were getting thore yes it's super cool well the the first thing you notice about this end of credit scene is Colson finally got a suit that fits yes great

[02:17:40] oh the first one the first movie Jesus Christ it looks like it it mean it looks like it was built for somebody like six inches taller um but uh the thing i'm rewatching this and

[02:17:54] credits scene gave off like major Indiana Jones and the temple of doom vibes like when they're finding the arc of the covenant the colors are the same you see the crew building around it

[02:18:04] i don't know what it's really hard to discover because it's pretty patently obvious that there's a hammer in the middle of a crater but yep so pretty cool and and gives us a really like i think this

[02:18:15] was the most definitive this is what's coming next scene like our after credit scenes that uh will argue about if if Hulk so is it after credit scene but um so far after credit scenes were like hey

[02:18:29] by the way we're creating a universe this was hey your next movie is thore this was like definitively essentially announcing our next movie which is really cool kind of the shift in the the role it played

[02:18:44] so anything else to add about that after credit scene oh i was gonna say that as uh on my rewatch as soon as i saw this and credits scene was just i immediately got flashbacks to the the

[02:18:58] Colson drives to New Mexico show which oh it was obviously love that one too haven't seen that yeah there they're all on it there are a lot Disney plus now yeah um and we're covering those

[02:19:13] one shots like in the movie they make the most sense too which i debated the on the way to on the way to thore's hammer one for this one or the next movie so ultimately we'll cover it next

[02:19:28] next month um but uh but yeah it it's really those those are weird because they're interspersed they they like exist within the continuity of the movie so they're kind of weird to place but

[02:19:43] but yeah super super cool um i would definitely encourage all of our listeners to go watch those one shots there they're about five minutes but they they're really fun in general yeah i i didn't even know they existed until they all appeared on Disney plus

[02:19:59] oh they were all DVD extras weren't they? ah yes yes i don't know the extras oh that much of a new one hey you pay for the blue ray man you're gonna watch the extras

[02:20:12] all right guys well i'm gonna we're gonna let Curtis and Grant get out of here thank you guys again so so much um this was a blast we'll have to have you guys on later uh when we get to a

[02:20:23] few later movies or something so take it easy guys uh how many did i get get it so get us back for either a really good or a really bad movie not one of the mid tier ones give

[02:20:35] us a really good one or a really bad one sounds good sounds good guys wait look
