[00:00:00] Hey, I'll be starting to show you this week. I wanted to get on and let you know that we do have a spoiler full review of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 in this episode.
[00:00:09] If you're trying to avoid Guardians spoilers, avoid the part of the episode between about 14 minutes and 25 minutes. It will give you another reminder in the episode but I want to make sure that y'all can enjoy the rest of the episode.
[00:00:22] Again, if you want to avoid spoilers skip to 25 minutes flat and you should be good to go. Now enjoy some music while I make sure that the timestamps match up. You know nothing. Welcome to Puny Pod's Monthly Bugle for May 2023.
[00:00:48] I'm Ryan and my co-host is David. Hey, David, how's it going today? Ryan, I'm doing fantastic. How are you doing today? You know what? I am doing really great.
[00:00:59] We both are coming back from a little bit of travel which actually we're going to talk a little bit about here in a second. But we were just about to go into the last episode. Are you doing great?
[00:01:14] I'm going to talk about what you did on the show. If you're good at being a hero, you'll have to be a hero if you've been a hero. You'll have to be a hero. I'm going to talk about what you did on the show.
[00:01:24] Well, and then do a screen grab and say, hey Ryan, Ryan, go to window number nine, order number 5623. Your benefit just is ready. So, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know we have to leave. And if you rate and review this show, we will buy you a bear.
[00:01:46] It's isn't the next time or third. There you go, send us an email. That's going to be a lot of beers. I think we have all of millions of listeners. That's that's a lot of beers. We're up to number nine.
[00:02:00] But yeah, so, so actually, we wanted to take a little bit out this week and do a little special segment here on the monthly bugle. And talk a little bit about Avengers campus. So, I guess David, what was your experience? Would you think of Avengers campus?
[00:02:21] So, Avengers campus is low key one of my favorites. Would you, I guess, would you say it's one of the lands? The park? I guess you would say it's one of the lands. Yeah. The park that's always difficult for me is I just want to hang out
[00:02:35] through the whole time. And the family are like, cool. We did the web singers and the gardens ride. And we got our, you know, our, you know, ginormous pretzels. Let's go into the next thing.
[00:02:46] And I just want to like, no, let me just nerd out and kind of walk around. So, I was able to spend some time. My son and I got to spend a little bit more time.
[00:02:52] I just want to like look at the architecture and just see, try to find the little things. And so, I think next time, I think I think I'll go to school myself and I'll nerd out. No, no, how about you? How did you enjoy it?
[00:03:06] You were just there. You were there for longer period time. Were there for four days? I think five days? Yeah, three days in the park. We spent part of two of those three in Avengers campus.
[00:03:18] And by the way, for those who are like Avengers campus, what park, what? Um, Avengers campus is a land that is built in Disney's California Adventure or Disney California Adventure, I guess there's no apostrophe S now. The Supreme Resort Guys would be all over me for that.
[00:03:37] But there is where they, so Avengers campus, the story is that it's an abandoned stark industries campus that the Avengers shield and the WEB web, which just so happens to be spider-man's like worldwide engineering brigade. I've kind of taken over and are inhabiting.
[00:04:06] And so, it's really cool as a Marvel fan, it's really, really neat to be in that land. And like you said, kind of hang out right now there's two rides technically one and a half with because you have web slingers, which is a new ride.
[00:04:23] And it's the story of it is that these spider-bots have gotten out across the campus. And you have to, you're in a pod that lets you sling webs or if you buy the, what I like to
[00:04:36] call IRL DLC that I bought, you can buy these power bands that give you extra power ups. I did buy the Iron Man one if you saw, if you were watching our social media as you saw,
[00:04:47] me post and some of the stuff about that. And so it's a really cool ride. And then why say half is several, a few years ago they overlaid the tower of terror with
[00:05:04] guardians of the galaxy. And that has always been amazing. The queue for that, you get Cosmo in there, which we'll talk about Cosmo here in our next segment. But you get Cosmo in there, you get
[00:05:17] some Thor Dark World references, which we're coming up on here soon. You get all kinds of stuff in that queue plus you get just a really fun drop ride. And so I thought it was, you know,
[00:05:29] overall the campus is really, really cool. There's a Schwarma, there's like a cart version of the Schwarma stand from Avengers, which has really good Schwarma. Hank Pym is kind of who's running the food there so you have him's test kitchen where everything is like, comically out of size.
[00:05:53] So like, either it's really small versions of something or really large versions of things. And then you have the, um, you have Pym's tasting lab, which is where all the drinks come from.
[00:06:08] You can, it's kind of fun if you get like a cocktail, it comes in like a little plastic beaker. Yeah. Yeah. Which is kind of fun. Yeah, it's fun. Like, um, they, I think they did a really good
[00:06:21] job of them. I thought, I think that's like there's a pretty good attention to detail. Having that watch, these movies repeatedly in the first phase. You, I enjoyed the Schwarma stand. There's more Captain America stuff. It's about a minute stuff that you don't necessarily notice
[00:06:36] the first time around. I did not get to go on the Guardians ride this time around. We had a lightning lane and the line for the lightning lane was half an hour. We're like, oh dang. Yeah, they have
[00:06:49] like an hour, we're going to eat some dirt. But um, but I appreciate it more in the second view and some of the photos you sent. It's like, oh, I know where that book is from. I know where
[00:06:59] that's from. And so encourage people. It'll be interesting to see how if that park extends at all, if they kind of like start to swallow up more of the Hollywood studio side. I know that, um,
[00:07:13] Rogers musical, what you're talking about in the last month, the vehicle will be appearing at some point in time. And so you just kind of see this little creep, more and more Marvel stuff. Eventually, eventually we will not feel California Adventure. It'll probably just be like
[00:07:29] Disneyland Adventure. You know, because now you'll pick up all your Marvel. There'll be very little actual quote, quote, California left. So yeah, I'm actually getting an alert right now. We do have
[00:07:41] a field reporter that we, we are going to take a quick, quick detour over to, uh, listen to our field reporter who is on site at Avengers Campus. Thanks Ryan. Ryan here reporting on scene at
[00:07:58] Avengers Campus. I can't confirm this is really, really cool. Here at Avengers Campus, you can see a lot of the characters that we absolutely all love. We all came to super joy and spend all of
[00:08:16] our time with, um, you cannot leave this land without seeing a character. There are characters everywhere you book, uh, which is really, really great. Get to meet a lot of people I got to meet,
[00:08:30] uh, Antman, and see the shrunken bugs land that they have shrunk down to replace with. But then Avengers Campus, um, they got to meet Iron Man and Ted did not love that. But let's see the door of
[00:08:45] Melange to some recruitment, um, really just a spectacular land here, um, in a really good time. I also got to, uh, do some work of my own with the web slingers. And I got to use Iron Man's
[00:09:05] Conlay, which you all know made me super excited. Well that does it for us here over at, uh, the field team. So back to the studio. Well they keep Ryan. But yeah and, and that, that's one thing
[00:09:23] we did mention is you walk into that land and you are, I don't want to say bombard it because I make it sound bad. But you, you see characters everywhere and it's characters from all along the
[00:09:37] MCU timeline. I saw Sam is as Captain America. I saw Steve as Captain America. I saw Iron Man. I saw, um, Black Panther, Black Widow, uh, Dr. Strange Spider-Man. I mean, it's, it's really, really
[00:09:54] to, to get in there and see. Yeah. Yeah. It's, I think, um, I think if that were around when I was a little kid, it would have broke my brain. Dude. Yeah. It was fun. Like, I, I enjoy spending the time
[00:10:08] there. I would like for them to open up another ride. Yeah. Perhaps, and that, I think that that large building where they oftentimes do the like fight recreations that's, that really big one
[00:10:21] with has the, um, the Avengers jet on the very top. I think that was supposed to be another indoor ride, I think. If I remember correctly. Yeah. They've announced that there is going to be
[00:10:31] another, in the park, in parks, parlance, we call it an E-ticket ride when it's a high level ride. That, that is supposed to go, they, they announced, I think at the 23 that they're going to
[00:10:44] do something there and last the, the most recent version of this because originally was going to be like, uh, you're going to helicopter flying over Wakanda kind of thing with the Avengers. The most recent thing has been a King Thanos storyline, um, which could be interesting.
[00:11:03] Um, so we'll see, we'll see how that turns out. One thing I did notice, um, and this is a little bit of park's nerdiness tangent. The reason why that building so big is because there's that
[00:11:14] garage door on it, what's behind there is where the trolley cars come on, uh, come in and out from their track. I saw it happen while I was there, the trolley cars that go down into Hollywood land,
[00:11:26] the red, called trolley cars. Yep. So that's what that garage door has to be so big for is to let trolley cars in and out. Interesting. Where did you see the miniature bugs land?
[00:11:36] Antman carries it around. Okay. Yeah. He, he carries bugs land around and he'll tell you, he'll tell you, yeah. We, we shrunk it down so that we could, uh, so we could build up here, which is kind of fun.
[00:11:47] That's funny. Yeah. The bugs land used to be the, um, the land that was there before and when my kids were really young, they were really like bugs land. But, you know, IP wins and so we're gonna
[00:12:00] have a lava land. So, well, it was a good time. Like, hi, hi, earning IP because bugs is still IP. It's bugs life, but it's a fair point. I do like, I will say this. I do like the Spider-Man
[00:12:12] web slingers ride quite a bit. If you've not done it before, I would say prepare yourself like the arm work at your in a get because it will be so or afterwards. But it's funny. I did that
[00:12:23] one with Ted on my chest for the first time. The, the first time we did it, I had the baby Bjorn on and Ted was on my chest and he couldn't, he couldn't quite get the, this, the sling down,
[00:12:34] but, you know, come on Ted. So there's something to add to the squirm on him. Yeah. Well, moving right along to our, our more normal bits. So as we usually cover in the monthly
[00:12:48] bugle if there's been anything Marvel related come out recently, we like to cover that, you know, here first, right? It's not gonna be our, our two hour long or what's probably shaping up to be
[00:13:00] a six hour long episode. Don't check with Avengers. Don't check. But it's not our, it's not our big full in-depth reviews. But we did want to talk a little bit about it because if you're listening
[00:13:16] to this show, expect one, expect spoilers to do expect spoilers about the, the movie that we're reviewing. So we're, we're gonna, we're about to talk about Guardians 3. There will be some spoilers.
[00:13:32] I will go back in and post and figure out what the time stamp is to skip. So if you're listening to this right now, you should have heard already in the pre-pre-area. Hey, go to
[00:13:46] this timestamp so that you can skip the spoilers if you don't want to have Guardians 3 spoiled for you or whatever. This will also be interesting because we have a lot of Marvel content coming.
[00:13:59] So really excited to get this. This will be a nice robust segment in future monthly bugles. So yeah, Guardians 3. Guardians of Galaxy volume three came out last month. I saw it on
[00:14:12] opening night. The Thursday it came out got got my mom to babysit Ted so we could go. I think you checked it out what Saturday of opening weekend Sunday. Yep. Opening weekend. It was great. It was great.
[00:14:25] How would you, uh, so, so in watching the third one, how did you feel? I'm sure like me, you were probably super excited to watch. But how did you feel after you saw it? What were your initial impressions? I was genuinely impressed. I think Marvel movies
[00:14:47] we love them. Obviously we have a whole podcast about it. But they tend to be one tone. Right? They're either very funny or very serious. There's really not. And there's not a lot of weight to them, I guess is the best way to put it. They're usually kind
[00:15:10] of fluffy fun. There's definitely some weight in some of them. But I think Guardians 3 had the most. One, it had the most stakes. Anybody could have died? No one died, right? No one, no one
[00:15:23] of significance died. But anyone could have died. And so, so, perilous situations are truly perilous. And so that I think added to the experience. And I think the heart that I think that was like
[00:15:44] the first thing I said to Lisa was like, I haven't seen a Marvel movie with that much like heart in a very long time. Yeah, they did the movies in this latest phase of the MCU
[00:16:00] have been a little underwhelming on the whole. And some could even park it back to some of the ones in the in the prior phase if you all. They're trying out different things. They're bringing
[00:16:09] into different characters. And so, you know, you have to allow them a little bit of latitude. They've done a great job so far. But this one, I left the movie theater and with the exception of just a
[00:16:22] couple of minor nits, it was pretty high up there in terms of the Guardians, both the terms of its overall ranking. I think when we talked about it, I remember immediately leaving the movie theater
[00:16:39] and texting you, I'm like, what do you think? What are your rankings, right? And it, I James Gunkudos. He, yeah, it's pretty amazing when you think like this. So this movie is supposed to appear earlier in the
[00:16:50] MCU. And if folks may or may not remember, James Gunn was temporarily let go because of some tweets which we're seeing as kind of insensitive, they were not anything of the nature of what,
[00:17:06] you know, of what we're seeing in terms of other creatives and actors, some of the controversy if you will hired back on widely beloved and he delivered. And oh yeah, it's this moment of
[00:17:21] you're like, I'm excited for the DC EU. I'm sad for the MCU but I thought it's sent out for very well done. Oh yeah, it was great. And I said earlier that no one died and I should
[00:17:36] I should correct myself because that, that, yeah, none of the guardians died and it also cuts short the fact of like rockets like origin story and the work with the high evolutionary and then
[00:17:55] teafs floor and Laila that, oh, it, it just destroys it. And they died so. I can't say no one died. The, I will say this is that Pixar was the first, was the first, was the first action company
[00:18:24] that made me cry over like animation, right? When it's seen it up. Where? Yeah, well I don't want to spell it up for anyone. While he, there's so many points you're like, oh my god, why am I
[00:18:37] a grown man and I'm crying at this scene and there was a point in time during this movie where I'm catching myself and I know I'm watching what is something that is CGI but wow they do,
[00:18:54] it was really, very impactful. The movie I thought was very well done like you said, it bounced action, it had, it was funny, it had a very simple premise, very simple plot. I thought
[00:19:10] coming into it that it might be some bigger larger landscape here's what's going on and they're going to save the universe and it's really not that at all. No, no there was no tie into the
[00:19:22] greater MCU, um, except with Thor died and that part was a bummer. But yeah, this Chris seems worth. Yeah, and what we're, I'm trying to even remember what are after credit because there
[00:19:38] were two after credit scenes. I guess there was the first, the first mid credit scene was like introducing the new guardians which will be interesting to see if they do anything with that team because it was
[00:19:50] rocket, group, um, Adam Warlock, Adam Warlock, Kraglin and there's some, was there a little kid? One of the little kids from like that they like, that was the refugee. Yeah, I need to go back and watch it. Go spend more money at the box office.
[00:20:13] More money, more money. In the second one that's right, the second one was like Peter Quill with his grandpa. He had it back to Tara talking about, you know, not wanting to mow his neighbors. Laugh and his neighbors kid was lazy. And if I remember right the newspaper,
[00:20:39] the newspaper that's seen referenced some current events in marble. But yeah, kind of it's cool. I think that sets Peter Quill up to be, you know, once we get to King Dynasty, that sets Peter Quill
[00:20:55] up to be like in with the Avengers. He's on earth now so if you can go hang out with the Avengers. So real quick, how would you rank the Guardians of Bovis? Yes. So I would say, you know, I do think volume three, volume three has,
[00:21:22] has days where it might be my favorite Guardians movie. There is and it's funny. I say this day because we're recording actually on the 25th of May, which I consider to be the actual Star Wars
[00:21:35] Day because it's when Star Wars released. May 4th is kind of like the Cinco de Mayo of the Star Wars universe, but you know, here we are. Now I would probably do. I think it's close. I think it's
[00:21:54] I still think it's number one three and two. Yeah, there was a little, there was a little stuff that sort of the last third of the movie that kind of slowed it and waited down a little bit.
[00:22:06] Bye. And to finish my thought real quick so that people don't think I just brought up Star Wars out of nowhere. By when I exited Guardians of the Galaxy one on like like the premiere night
[00:22:22] and I'll probably share this when we get to it in our review. The closest feeling that I could describe it as was the first time that I remembered watching a new hope. Like it was that same,
[00:22:38] there was that same feeling for Guardians one and I do think Guardians three doesn't. It doesn't recapture that like that was really fun. This is like a monument like this is a a trademark movie in my life right here touch point. You know I don't think Guardians three
[00:22:59] was necessarily at that level, but I think it was really really good. Guardians one was at that level when it came out. It was one of those ones that I was like I loved this movie. This movie is like
[00:23:10] seeing this movie as a key point in the timeline of my life. I think it probably goes 132. Two is just and I'm looking forward to when we get to rewatch it because I want to give it another
[00:23:28] like light a day and I want to watch it with intention but like two just I just remember it being lackluster for me. Yeah I think it's fair. I think that's fair. I one was a bit of a game
[00:23:40] changer because I remember when they announced they were making Guardians movie I was not I did not read the comic book when I'm younger and in my mind I was like okay cool we had the
[00:23:52] tree in the raccoon and this would be interesting to see how they pulled it off and they did blew my mind with how well they did it and how much I actually really cared for the characters
[00:24:02] and really bought into the story. It's one of my favorite rewatches for sure. Two I've seen a couple times and I'm not being as invested in watching it again over and over again doesn't have that
[00:24:14] same-so-rewatch ability for me. I think three will be three's a tough rewatch for parts of it like their parts are where I'm like I can't rewatch this scene. My only my only kind of negative
[00:24:27] comments like I said 13 contract a little bit. I enjoyed Adam Warlock read Adam Warlock as a when I was younger. Didn't love how he was presented in the film. I think in part he was supposed
[00:24:43] to be like a young Adam Warlock. So I'm getting into it. Mama's boy, whatever and now we'll probably see him growing events so I'm looking forward to the out-part but yeah I would agree with you it's
[00:24:55] one three two for me as well. Yeah that's fair that's fair. All right well David should we move on to some news it's been a pretty busy news month here in the Marvel universe. Let's get out of it.
[00:25:09] All right well I'll take the first story here so what are the big pieces of news that's kind of been going around is all I'm I'm I'm loving it all under the category of things going on on Disney
[00:25:23] Plus. So first I'm going to hit some of the things that as of recording tonight this is our last night to watch them because they're not going to be on Disney Plus anymore tomorrow. If you
[00:25:36] missed of the news during their earnings call Disney announced that they would be taking select projects off of Disney Plus it generally the big stuff is safe so you know your your Marvel
[00:25:52] movies themselves are generally safe it is a lot of the smaller projects where it hits where it intersects with the Marvel world is three three specific projects so project hero which was kind of
[00:26:13] hey look at this cool thing we do to work with specifically kids who are doing really cool things so Marvel would go in and they would help like design curriculum for like charitable things or
[00:26:28] they would donate money there there was one of them that I remember where like a kid was was like feeding the unhoused and and Marvel went in and helped him fund that
[00:26:42] real life superheroes kind of stuff that was kind of the idea behind it and they would at the end they would give the kids comic books of their like their good deeds they're doing which was
[00:26:55] really cool they would get like drawn up like a superhero by the Marvel staff and then they would get a comic book of the good deeds they did which is really cool really special for those kids I
[00:27:04] hope that even if it's not being put to film my help Marvel is still out there doing this because it was a really cool thing um M power which was actually just released a couple months ago
[00:27:17] produced by Zozo Seldana it was I believe a six episode show that highlights the women of the MCU so each episode was on a different woman within the MCU so you know kind of
[00:27:33] it's the kind of behind the scenes stuff and then the last one here is Voices Rising the music of Wakanda forever which was of behind the scenes on specifically putting together the music for Wakanda forever um so disappointing to see stuff go definitely some stuff that once we're
[00:27:51] done recording here I might go try and check out like especially the music of Wakanda forever that's one that was like on my watch list and I never got to so sad to see that go outside of the Marvel
[00:28:04] universe one of the biggest ones that got hit that that is making some of the most noise is Willow so the Willow show that they made is being taken down um which is unfortunate
[00:28:18] I started watching it I didn't finish it but it was enjoyable as far as I started just never priority and time didn't get to anymore though. I'm surprised they are um I'm surprised they're taking that M power so quickly I realized that there are a lot of reasons
[00:28:37] most of the rationale is not disclosed in terms of why something's getting taken down you know it could be like hey server space is really expensive or you know likelihood it's often times
[00:28:50] things have to do with like residuals and it's licensing and all that kind of stuff so bum to see the good news is I would say the for Disney Plus I think the general trend is to
[00:29:02] aggregate add more and more and then you see from other sites like Netflix we saw a bunch of stuff come off over time you know hopefully they won't take any more stuff off so yeah yeah I'm glad it is
[00:29:15] at least in the Marvel world it's the behind the scenes stuff right it's not you know what if or Hawkeye or something yeah oh we'd be remiss Dan. Dan might hurt us if
[00:29:31] a man don't touch Perry could you imagine if Princess Perry was gone bummer now I don't know that Dan would make it um but on the flip side right so that's that's the sad stuff that's what's going
[00:29:45] here's what's coming um so as of recording uh quantumania has been released on um Disney Plus so if you want to watch quantumania and go check out that post credit scene that we mentioned
[00:30:00] that we uh good it remember what it was and we got it mixed up in the Guardians part um go you can go check out quantumania you can also pause and freeze frame on um modox butt because you get
[00:30:17] to see modox butt um it is a good one I really enjoyed quantumania I think probably pseudo for you whatever eight dollars a month that you're paying for all the other content is probably
[00:30:32] the right price to pay for quantumania at this point um seeing it in the theaters was a blast for me but um you know getting to watch it over and over and over again for my streaming cost I'm excited for
[00:30:44] yeah I'm excited for it as well I saw we both saw it in the theater I saw a little bit after you okay a lot of stuff going on uh while I am uh looking maybe not looking forward to seeing modox
[00:30:57] butt quite as much as much but I really want to rewatch it and look at some of the smaller things yeah you see in the theater and you're just you know you're you're consumed by the sound
[00:31:09] of the music the visuals and this big screen and now it's time to kind of nerd out look at it more closely when you go to rewatch it or any of our fans who go to rewatch it
[00:31:20] they saw a thing online and I want you to watch it with this in mind are you playing it with the Wizard of Oz? No no not quite that not quite that okay fine um but win
[00:31:40] Thanos destroys the the infinity stones he says he reduced them to atoms I saw a theory online and you're gonna have to watch quantum maniac closely to see see if you agree or not we potentially see the infinity stones in quantum mania as sentient beings
[00:32:06] okay do you tell so there there is a scene where there are what is it one two three four five six six characters standing there in the colors of the infinity stones all together and so if they were
[00:32:19] reduced to atoms maybe they got maybe pieces of them sharded off and went into the quantum realm I don't know check it out I you know go watch it see if you pick that up I like I say it was one of
[00:32:34] those things you see online that you kind of scroll patch like huh interesting but yeah definitely I would say give it a look okay that makes my brain hurt but I will look for it and I'll rewatch
[00:32:47] other stuff that is going on you mentioned shows that are gonna be releasing you mentioned Loki I think you mentioned echo as folks probably know the writer's skill of America has
[00:33:00] entered in strike as of today May 25th anniversary of which we'll get to in a bit Star Wars uh the writers are still on strike and what does this mean the the prior writer strike to I think was 2007 2008 lasted 100 days impacted
[00:33:21] the early MCU stuff impacted Iron Man impact the Captain America fact I think Captain Michael was supposed to be the second movie ended up being shifted to later in the MCU phase one
[00:33:32] and I think so my understand the articles I have read suggested that the stuff that is announced with hard dates so secret invasion which is coming June 21 we talked about last time really look for that Loki season 2 October 6 the Marvels November 10 and echo November 29 are not impacted
[00:33:52] other shows like uh and in principle the writer's skill strike is impacting shows which are you know if you if you have a late night talk show you are screwed uh if you have something which is in
[00:34:05] which is already been post production you might be okay you just can't bring in writers to rewrite stuff so things like for example iron heart agathic oven and chaos they've wrapped filming they don't have release dates they could still do stuff in post production they just can't
[00:34:23] you just can't do any rewrites but the stuff that's currently filming will be impacted so things like dare double-born again which we talked about a couple episodes ago where they're gonna be writing
[00:34:34] and filming this thing for a year blade and Wonderman those things will be impacted and so but from the fan perspective I think they I think the NCU already factored that stuff in so remember
[00:34:49] I think with the last one Ryan we talked about oh there's some shifting time frames for stuff that MCU I think that was that was a Disney slash Marvel already reading the T leaves and saying okay
[00:35:00] they're gonna strike stuff's gonna be impacted we're gonna push stuff out and so you see a lot of stuff with you know 2023 TBA 24 TBA so and the last thing I would say is I've read various
[00:35:15] guest imits as to when the strike might be wrapped up I've seen things as early as July I've seen things as latest Christmas they are striking for different reasons than the last time around
[00:35:32] my guess is that as for all things that are you in strike on the writer's guild we'll strike for a period of time find some sort of good concessions or our fair concessions and then
[00:35:43] sign back on and we'll we'll kind of move forward so yeah I think I think a really interesting thing with this one so you know I wanted to throw my support behind the WGA like I think
[00:35:58] you know it is a scary time to be a creative right they're they're generative AI is doing really cool things and that is what they are striking for is is they want some assurances that that
[00:36:14] you know producers aren't just gonna go to chat GPT say hey spit out a script for Daredevil and then you know they go ahead and take that script and make Daredevil the movie or Daredevil show
[00:36:29] and suddenly you have no writers right and they want some assurances for that sort of thing and I can understand that for sure like I empathize with that that's in my own line of work I'm in a call
[00:36:41] center and so that kind of next generation AI is can be very very scary so definitely concerning there and as a fan you know I think the cautionary tale in the superhero genre around writer strikes is is heroes so if anybody remembers the
[00:37:07] believe there was NBC show heroes the the the later seasons kind of had to recover from some scab writing that happened during the during one of the last WGA strikes and so
[00:37:28] definitely it can it can derail um a show can definitely be derailed if its writers are not there and if its writers are not being treated fairly and so certainly certainly kind of a concerning
[00:37:45] concerning situation but hopefully everybody can kind of come to the table and come together the you make a really good point the things that that the WGA strikes over again it's been 15 years at 15 16 years since the last strike last time around it was around streaming right and
[00:38:06] being compensated trying to figure out how writers will get credit for residuals for online streaming nowadays they're like you're saying you're talking about AI I listen to a really good podcast the um it's the distraction it's a podcast by the the the the defector and they had
[00:38:29] Michael sure who was on the bargaining community for the WGA talk a lot about what happened in 2007 2008 this is an episode from May 2nd if anyone is interested it's 23 minutes it's a urban it's a little bit longer that it's a really good listen to because you're they're really
[00:38:47] kind of get into what's going on behind the scenes and it sounds like production companies in the movies studios have as much as possible try like squeeze writers and make it you know make it more more difficult so you know uh
[00:39:05] standing as you said Ryan staying with the the members of the union as they strike for fair and reasonable bargaining contentions absolutely um so yeah and and in there you mentioned
[00:39:20] echo and and this was gonna be part of my first story and then I totally forgot it um but I did want to talk a little bit about echo because it's being released in a interesting way so for those on
[00:39:30] where echo is a spin-off from Hawkeye um she is the um hearing impaired adoptive daughter of Kingpin um and it is being released in a change of strategy for Disney it is being released
[00:39:52] all in one on the 29th of November so instead of being released week by week which is what Disney has traditionally done they're going to take I'll call it the Netflix model because this is
[00:40:09] how Netflix typically releases their content they're going to take and they're going to release it all at once um now I've seen some conflicting speculation online based on like a podcast appearance by a film critic this week so take that for what it will what you will like
[00:40:26] this is not direct from Kevin Feige here anything this is a guy who said he was talking to Kevin Feige and found this information out um but a lot of folks when that announcement was made about echo were
[00:40:42] like okay cool it's Disney trying something else out right maybe you know a property that's probably they knew was not going to do the same sort of numbers that Loki will do it's not going to
[00:40:56] it's not going to be over-over popular um but you know it's still marvel so it still should give them some sort of test of the water um and so the initial thought was like okay they're just
[00:41:10] testing it they're testing to see what what releasing them to binge looks like um then this week on a podcast um I can't remember the film critics name which is on important uh he mentioned that
[00:41:25] he was talking to someone inside barvel i don't think it was Kevin Feige himself but the rumor is that at least the first version of echo that showed up at Kevin Feige's desk was deemed unreliable by Kevin Feige so bad yeah so bad it couldn't even be released
[00:41:47] and so the thought is as they cleaned it up as best as they could and now they're just trying to get it all out so that the negative press doesn't carry on for six weeks while they're releasing
[00:41:58] episode after episode instead it's just one one hit of negative press i'm gonna hold really the whole judgment until it actually comes out i will absolutely watch it i will watch anything marvel
[00:42:11] um but definitely you know i will we'll see it it i wouldn't be surprised if it if it was not traditionally great i guess is the way I'll put it because it is is a non-traditional story
[00:42:29] it is a B character it's not you know you're it's not your big mainline characters echo is is kind of an also and um and so it'll be it'll be interesting to see how that goes
[00:42:43] did you read any the echo comic books i did not did you no i did not have to put time so for me it's a clean slate and like you i will embrace it i will treat that as a non-productive
[00:42:58] work day because i think that's coming out of Wednesday so that's gonna like ruin my work productivity for the day but i will watch it stream it and joy it for sure um it's a different model it's for sure
[00:43:11] let me see it'll be interesting to see how we digest that versus the ones that come once a week yeah it's it's in that productivity trough between thanksgiving and Christmas anyways like
[00:43:24] nobody's expecting productivity that that at that time i'm really glad my boss does not listen to this mine done so well sorry sorry Justin sorry Kelly i know both of you listen um i will be
[00:43:41] productive between thanksgiving and Christmas promise to watch on the weekend yeah all right so let's so as we talk about to segue into um screenwriting a little bit uh just a really quick
[00:43:55] there wasn't a lot of news because with the DJ strike a lot of things have been put on pause on hold post-poned a little bit one of the news articles of kopp my eye was that
[00:44:06] Jeff love this who is the screenwriter for antman and the lost quantum man that we talked about just LaWalico has parted ways before the wj strike and is no longer writing Avengers King Dynasty which kind of cop my eye uh there's a separate writer uh Michael Waldron
[00:44:28] who wrote the Loki series he also did i think wrote for uh Rick and Morty is still writing Avengers secret wars and i'm kind of curious to know i've not been able to find
[00:44:42] any other reasons why i know that antman and quantum and man in the lost quantum mania was not super well received you didn't do fantastic at the box office there were i don't know if you remember there were some rumors of uh stuff being leaked online
[00:45:05] the to the point where Jeff loved us actually addressed it and said that we did not come from me and so i just find a kind of interesting curious that like to replace a screenwriter at this point in
[00:45:17] time we've seen it a number of times we've seen it we're gonna see it on the Avengers where Josh we didn't took over and rewrote the script because this had the first script was like
[00:45:27] it's basically worthless and so uh it's not it's nothing new but i thought uh the thought the fact that there was no announcements as to the reason why and they just kind of disappeared
[00:45:40] I thought it was kind of curious and interesting so we'll see what happens there yeah it is really interesting because literally last month we just covered the fantastic four screenwriter was also
[00:45:50] shifting um they went they changed that uh screenwriter so and i think we're also at a time where where whether it's because we're fans or just because of how the MCU is going i think we're
[00:46:08] hyper aware of of changes to the MCU and there is a lot of changes going on i think um the changes at the Disney company you know this week we just saw the third round of layoffs and
[00:46:25] the strategy was streaming is changing we covered that earlier tonight where we talked about things being dropped off of streaming i think there is a lot of change going on throughout the company and i think probably some of these writer changes reflect that um i
[00:46:46] think you know looking at Michael Waldron's credits at this point right lowkey was very successful for the company um and so to put him in charge of a movie is like you know a pretty safe bed at this
[00:47:01] point um whereas Jeff Lovenus like you said he did antman in the loss quantum media i loved it but i i know it was not critically received well it struggled at the box office um and so
[00:47:17] i kind of wonder if that signals a change towards a a little bit safer kind of path right now and not to say that lowkey was a safe series necessarily but um yeah it seems like in a lot of ways
[00:47:39] Disney is showing its bets right now i think lowkey was anything but a safe series uh Tom Hiddleston don't came along is a rock star and is one of the we talked about it i think in the
[00:47:50] super secret spoiler show like one of the one of the merging stars in phase one of the MCU so but the concept itself especially when you start digging into like the multiverse yeah gets
[00:48:01] gets for some folks gets weird really quick um the fantastic four screen writer that was interesting because it the they they named a successor and so looking at what the original screen writer
[00:48:15] was going their uh credits and comparing it with the successor screen writer suggested it was going to take a more serious tone less comedic which for the fantastic four i i'm in for but the fact
[00:48:29] it didn't name anyone i thought was kind of interesting so i'm well well continuing to follow this story i'm really curious to know who they end up selecting as screen writer or screen writers
[00:48:42] yeah should be interesting for sure um well one last thing that did get announced uh literally yesterday actually at the time of recording time of listening about a week ago um was the
[00:48:56] PlayStation it's a PlayStation did a showcase um and during that showcase they showed off a lot of video games for those of you in the gaming world really cool stuff go check it out if you haven't already
[00:49:11] but where it intersects with marble is uh they they released footage from the sequel to um the really really popular and i played the most of it really really good spider man uh game that came out
[00:49:27] for a PlayStation four um and then there was like a pseudo sequel that was Miles Morales is more like a downloadable content it wasn't really a full sequel but now the second one is coming
[00:49:39] out um and they they showed some of the gameplay um it's going to involve Craven so Craven's going to come to New York he's going to be hunting super powered people uh looks like hunting like cart
[00:49:51] corners um and uh Peter Parker is going to get the symbiote suit and the the action in this trailer with Peter Parker in his symbiote suit it is so so good things that they can only do with video games
[00:50:08] right like it you wouldn't look good um on a movie screen just because the graphics you know you can do different things with it but it looks so so so excellent um and throughout the whole trailer
[00:50:24] one of the central conflicts that seems to be arising is kind of symbiote empowered Peter Parker being his kind of sassy cell who you know you kind of gets the ambition and the anger pieces of it
[00:50:38] kind of budding heads with Miles Morales um and it and it looks like you're going to be able to switch characters throughout it looks like it's going to lead to probably some sort of conflict between Peter
[00:50:49] Parker and Miles Morales which is really cool um and so I'm I'm really excited for that I love the first one so I'm really excited for the second one yeah I'm not a huge video game person but
[00:50:59] I watched most of the trailer and it looks really cool I wish my hand-eye coordination was better that I could do well the games is supposed to like dying like as all the games of play these days
[00:51:11] I didn't see I didn't see Betty Ross her character I assume she's like in the second one after the game yeah she's in the second half video for our short but um now it's gonna be fun like
[00:51:27] I I think the fact that you can tell and maybe this is a separate segment so I have the time like tell stories in the video games themselves is kind of cool right like and it's not just some you know
[00:51:44] you know mindless video gamers shooting people or any people over their car or whatever but there's the other's actual story to bring in Craven who we're gonna see in a movie I guess it'd be pretty cool
[00:51:55] yeah yeah it's really really cool um and there's on one of the very first walkabouts um that I ever did with with Jason from years up we watched a video where the guy who developed the swinging
[00:52:09] mechanics for one of the old Spider-Man video games it was like I think the PlayStation 1 maybe N64 Spider-Man game that had really good swinging mechanics it looked good while you're swinging
[00:52:24] the video we watched was somebody taking the new game at the time which was the first one in this new series to them and being like here check this out and he was just amazed he was like dude this like
[00:52:38] the amount of the way that like you're doing superhero human things but still feel like you are doing them even though you're through a controller and all that it it's it's amazing and I could never
[00:52:51] imagine like writing that that type of code or that like being in that place where like you are actually making people feel like they're spider-man I do I do it just kind of occur to me as you were talking
[00:53:04] about it running and discussing it it would be cool if they did this overlay for web singers right yeah bringing the symbiote like this is a you know one of the things it's cool about and again I
[00:53:16] started about the parks too much but around galaxies edge around Avengers campuses you could overlay kind of new stuff that comes out you could you know the the the web singers could be
[00:53:29] something that that pretends to be miles Morales and so I don't know I'm excited for that part I hope that they explore that kind of creative auction because I think it'd be really really really fun
[00:53:41] yeah I agree I definitely agree and like I mentioned in my in the field report um I there so with Avengers campus you can buy this like wristband thing that then goes over
[00:53:55] your hand and you get extra powers and the one I bought was Iron Man which was really cool but the whole time I was also thinking like I had to spend money on this now they were on sale and
[00:54:06] I could go into a lot of depth about like some of the sale things in the park that that have me concerned for Avengers campus but that's a whole show in and of itself um and so but I do
[00:54:21] think it's really cool and I was talking a little bit about this on the hub crawl another podcast I did I substituted co-hosted it a couple months ago or I guess a month ago now um it was like two weeks ago
[00:54:37] you just are some time um and so I did or we were talking about something that was high about just that about how they've done all these video rides now just just do something
[00:54:50] else fun with it add more into it you all you're doing is staring in a screen like I know that that down plays a lot of the the work that has to go into like the way you move and all that but
[00:55:02] it is it is much simpler to overlay that or add a character into the background of that than it is like Peter Pan where it's a bunch of 60 year old plywood props that that you have to
[00:55:18] like repay and move carefully if you want to do anything totally yeah uh last thing I would say is if you're in the parks if anyone if any fan is in the park and you see that they have
[00:55:30] discounted the mural let me know let me know oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh hashtag mural uh real quick so one other topic I just want to cover and um well I know we're
[00:55:42] kind of wrapping up but today no one's listening to his day on May 25th this probably at released little bit later on after you et her out added out my coughing and my mute mics but
[00:55:55] today is the 46th anniversary release of Star Wars new hope it is the 40th anniversary of return of the Jedi and I share this because I like you run consider this to be the more
[00:56:09] official Star Wars day right and so I have I think I mentioned none one of the earlier shows I've seen every Star Wars I'm that old I've seen every Star Wars movie in the theater I remember
[00:56:21] I remember in 1977 I remember going to theater over and over again walking down to Pima Namedy theater in Oakland and watching this movie because there wasn't anything else to do and and
[00:56:32] man I love this movie so much I love the franchise so much I know this is not the Star Wars and I know this is not Bantemoke boys but I just want to acknowledge it I am uh happy for this day
[00:56:47] I love Star Wars and I'm an nerd that's all I want to say I'm done heck heck yeah I mean heck yeah we wouldn't be here today without Star Wars like like very honestly the MCU would not exist if Star Wars didn't
[00:57:00] exist um yes look the comics predated it but to bring that type of story to us or that type of story to screen would not have happened there Star Wars is referenced by Peter Parker all the
[00:57:15] dang time in the MCU um yeah Marvel and Star Wars are are intrinsically linked so I'm glad you brought that up because yeah I think without without Star Wars there would be no Marvel all
[00:57:34] of our special all the special effects are done by ILM industrial light magic which is Lugious Film all the sound effects are done by Skywalker sound yep again Lugious Film um so yeah I wholeheartedly agree
[00:57:52] and then one last thing that I did want to bring up and unfortunately this does put us a a little bit of a downer here but don't worry we should have our wrap-up stuff to do
[00:58:05] um so earlier this week the news came out that Ray Stevenson has passed away at the age of 58 Ray Stevenson for those of you who are primarily familiar with Marvel stuff you will remember him as
[00:58:24] the best beard in the MCU in Volstag um uh with the famous line of do not mistake my app but do not mistake my appetite for apathy um he was also pre-MCU he played Frank Castle in Punisher Warzone
[00:58:43] which is actually pretty good Punisher movie I remember watching that I haven't watched it in a while but remember watching it um he to tag onto our Star Wars stuff we were just talking about
[00:58:55] he also lent his voice to Star Wars Rebels and will be in the upcoming Asoka show so he still has some projects coming out but definitely sad you know sad 58 is not a old age
[00:59:13] so definitely I would say you know young passing and uh someone who's involved with the movies we love um we will see him here in another movie or two and um when we go to watch Thor Darkwood
[00:59:29] yeah very sad news uh I liked him in the Thor movies he wasn't like you're saying he was the Star Wars head of one of the voice and just strikes me as one of those you know character actors
[00:59:43] you would see and look forward to seeing in a bunch different things you know like you said I 58 is really young and it's very sad and so you know kind of thoughts go on to the family
[00:59:54] absolutely absolutely well um with that being said that is all of our news for the month so please remember to check out our social medias we are puny pod everywhere so just puny pod
[01:00:10] um it did turn into my travel blog our social medias turned into my travel blog last week while I was in the park so if you're curious about what all this park stuff is that I was talking
[01:00:20] about go check that out um see you're ready you're writing off your trip for tax reasons that's what he's saying so very seriously that came up on the secret show on the main
[01:00:32] main show secret show they were talking about that and then like the next day Jason texted me on it's like dude you know you can do that right and I was like oh I didn't but I'll have to check that out
[01:00:45] it's cool I know what hey I'm a tax return I declare an aircasey dependent so it's not good I mean those band the boys are out back in the trailer so I think that that counts as a dependent
[01:00:58] at least we get the nice studio with the air conditioning but also check us out on discord so the ears up discord there is a Marvel channel on there there's actually a good picture of that I 3D printed like a mannequin arm to hold the
[01:01:20] repulsor thing that I bought in the parks so you there's a good picture of it on there so go check that out interact with us there I'm RGH on there and then a couple last
[01:01:32] last few plugs that I wanted to throw out there because they're coming up here if you are not a listener two ears up main show right so we are on the ears up network that includes like we mentioned
[01:01:46] vantemilk uh supreme resort scraping the vaults us and then there's the quote on quote main show the original show ears up I will be appearing on the the original show the main show
[01:02:03] in June I'll be talking all about genie plus in the Disney parks and then the one that's probably more interesting to this audience is in August I will be appearing on the main show to
[01:02:16] defend and I think I'm going to bring David on with me for this one uh to defend Avengers campus because Avengers campus is not super loved by the parks community so we want to go and
[01:02:27] and stand our ground for our turf so check that out if you haven't been listening to the main show give that a listen um and the other show that I'm part of sort of part of on the network it's not
[01:02:40] really a show is the walkabout or we watch YouTube videos and kind of BS um that is soon to move be uh we're talking about moving that outside of the paywall soon so um if you if you like my voice
[01:02:52] and you like here and me talk um you're going to have some more chances too so uh check those out but with that all being said I thank everybody for listening and make sure you check out your
[01:03:04] feed here in a couple weeks uh for actually I think it's going to be a week after release I think we're going to have back-back weeks of releases here um but listen to our episode on Marvel's V of
[01:03:17] Avengers let's go let's go let's go on woo and we're gonna and that's gonna feature Eric who is on like all the other shows that I mentioned except for Band-in-Lock he's my dependent
[01:03:29] he's awesome you never show so Eric will be you know you send me a social care number I got audited and I need to add it to my text sure okay now it's gonna be a super fun episode
[01:03:40] it it's gonna be really good it's gonna be really good should be great should be great well with that all being said thank you again for listening I know I already said that but you know what I can't say it enough so that being said enough said
