[00:00:00] Welcome to Puny Pod's monthly bugle for March 2024. My name is Ryan and my co-host as always

[00:00:08] is David. David, how are we doing today? I'm doing pretty well. You were so amped coming

[00:00:13] in. I almost just want to do a pew pew for some reason. No idea why. I'm doing well. How

[00:00:20] are you? Not too shabby. Not too shabby. We are we're doing swim lessons over here. So it's

[00:00:28] a good time. It's it is weird though I will tell you doing swim lessons when staring down

[00:00:37] the winter storm warning at the same time. That's a that's a weird dichotomy to have.

[00:00:42] You're indoors, I assume? Yes. I'm really clear like I'm trying to say how hardcore you were

[00:00:49] with your swim. Like come on Teddy five more laps. I'm assuming Teddy can't speak yet but

[00:00:56] Dad I know one two. You're just like yelling at him more more. Growing ice cubes at him in the pool.

[00:01:04] Yeah, but yeah it's so it's it's a good time came home from that and now now we're here when

[00:01:11] we're recording and I get to hang out with you for a little bit here. So that's a good time.

[00:01:15] Huh super fun and we're indoors and we're not getting yelled up by a swim coach. So

[00:01:20] good on us. Good right. Well you all come here for Marvel news if you weren't to where this is our

[00:01:30] news show we are puny pod. We do every other episode we do a review of a Marvel movie in release

[00:01:41] order and then here on the monthly bugle we cover the news of the times because if we did this

[00:01:49] all is one episode we would be releasing like five hour episodes every month and we decided

[00:01:55] that's not for the best. So instead we'll release these news episodes separately from our two and a

[00:02:02] half hour movie reviews. So news that's fit to cover today jumping in headfirst so no current content

[00:02:14] reviews nothing has come out since last we spoke other than Madame Webb but I'm gonna say I'm

[00:02:21] gonna not lie I will say straight up I have not watched it and probably won't watch it until it hits

[00:02:27] streaming. I will say friend of the podcast Eric from all the other shows on this fine network

[00:02:35] he did say it is good so at least somebody out there is saying it's good.

[00:02:41] I think Eric sent a message of photo of him at the theater like opening day and I think he was

[00:02:48] the only one at Alamo Drafthouse I think. Yeah yeah it was a pretty empty theater but you know what

[00:02:57] I do hope that it's good I hope that it beats the kind of general feeling that the internet has for

[00:03:06] it but I just hope it does a lot of money because I think you and I have a wager. I don't think that's

[00:03:12] I'm not relying on that one that one's more like any of that one is gonna be a bomb but Deadpool's gonna

[00:03:18] make a ton of money so. Hey Venom Venom got a little this we won't cover this necessarily in the news

[00:03:24] but Venom did get its release date moved up October and it got a title called The Last Dance so you

[00:03:34] do have people trying to get in on you know the end of a series going for you in that wager so

[00:03:45] okay also it's the name of a ESPN movie series but they're TV series but that's fine.

[00:03:52] That's fair. Well turning our attention to the mainline MCU, the Disney MCU if you will

[00:04:00] we've got a lot of things kind of boiling up on the mutant side of life. First and foremost

[00:04:08] came out recently that Ryan Reynolds is going to be more than just the star of Deadpool and Wolverine

[00:04:18] he's also going to get both a writing and a producing credit. So I love to see that for him.

[00:04:25] I think that that's really exciting and that that seems right. I think he you know he's had a lot of

[00:04:31] input on as far as I've heard a lot of input on that movie. Yeah and so if you remember like this was

[00:04:40] oh this was around the time when we had the writer strike then we had the actor strike and why

[00:04:46] everything faulted and it kind of makes sense that because he's so ingrained in the process that

[00:04:55] he wanted to give him kind of kudos and credit. I know that we've seen other MCU actors get production

[00:05:04] credits so like Tom Hiddleston I think for Loki, Scarlet Johansson for Black Widow but he's the

[00:05:14] let me think about this he's the only actor. So I would know I'm going to mess this up but he's

[00:05:22] getting writing credits as well. Someone also recently just reviewed that also got some

[00:05:28] the minimum amount of writing credits but like for the most part it's definitely like actors act

[00:05:33] but in this case you know he's also producing and writing so I'm pretty well good.

[00:05:38] Well and didn't did what's his name end up getting writing credits for incredible Hulk?

[00:05:46] No he wanted credits I remember. Yes the actor who's okay let me go back

[00:05:56] refresh my brain. Not Mark Ruffalo. No at this out at Norton. Thank you.

[00:06:04] At Norton wanted credits he had reshaped things but my understanding is that

[00:06:11] yet this was the first case but not the last one where screenwriters fought over who would get

[00:06:20] screenwriting credit for a particular movie. But for the most part like after the Ironman 2

[00:06:27] debacle they're like we're done with like we're done in this process so but good for him I mean

[00:06:32] it sounds like I'm sure it's very much like a collaborative process he's involved in all sides

[00:06:38] he's very I think because there's so much ably ad lib that he does during the process that you

[00:06:45] almost have to like give him some credit for out coming up screenplay in a weird way.

[00:06:51] Yeah that makes sense that makes sense and like you say it there's probably some part of this

[00:06:58] that also is you know they were they were still filming during the writers strike and

[00:07:03] so there's probably some things that he helped out with it okay a little bit of a wreck on credit

[00:07:11] there. And there's also the element of like hey man Marvel MCU if you want me to make this movie

[00:07:16] you're gonna have to like pony up and give me some credits other than just acting credits so

[00:07:23] Well Mr. Lively will get his credits.

[00:07:27] Mr. what's the what's the telecom what's the wireless?

[00:07:32] Oh mint mobile yeah. Mr. Mint mobile. Mr. Rexam

[00:07:39] So moving from Deadpool over to all of the the mutants in X-Men 97 we are heating up on X-Men 97

[00:07:52] we are as we record we are a week out from release as you listen to this you're gonna be listening

[00:07:59] to this like the day before release so the release date is March 20th.

[00:08:10] So yeah this should read this episode you should be hearing this on March 19th

[00:08:16] so literally get your get your X-Men underrues ready and yeah get ready for some some sweet

[00:08:27] guitar licks and a good time for sure. How are you going to be if they change the theme song?

[00:08:32] Dude they better they put it in the trailer they put the and I'm like oh you you better not change it

[00:08:41] No they're not gonna change it. I didn't think it's a couple things to note

[00:08:48] the schedule so they're doing a release schedule which is eight not the same as they did whether

[00:08:55] like just release them all once they are going to do you know kind of per week episodes they're

[00:09:01] doing a finale which is a three-part finale which is kind of interesting um I don't know

[00:09:08] do you have any like ideas or thoughts what that could look like?

[00:09:12] Yeah so I do know that so the the original series the X-Men animated series that this is

[00:09:21] you know a spiritual successor if not a direct successor to

[00:09:27] did kind of those arcs did like three or four episode arcs I remember that they did one with like

[00:09:34] uh dark phoenix saga they did days of future pass that way so that that kind of is a little bit of

[00:09:43] how the show has worked in the past and so I suspect it's it's paying a little bit of homage there.

[00:09:51] I think we're probably gonna get like birth of cable type of stuff because we have seen

[00:09:58] a pregnant looking or pregnant person who looks like gene gray which if you know marvel comics you

[00:10:05] know that that's probably not gene gray for one um and for two you probably can start to formulate

[00:10:14] some guesses as to who uh who is gestating there so interesting yeah yeah so so I think it should

[00:10:26] be cool um there's the trailer kind of showed us a little bit uh like I say of that um it showed

[00:10:34] us it looks like this is going to not have professor X this is gonna be after the death of professor X

[00:10:42] one of the scenes in the trailer showed us magneto reading professor X's will and testament and saying

[00:10:48] that everything that professor X built is now magnetos which could be interesting um

[00:10:57] and also the I think the coolest part of the trailer was uh there's a scene where Wolverine is writing on

[00:11:08] um gambit's back and gambit powers up wolverines claws with his like

[00:11:15] kinetic blast power pretty cool do you uh do we know like how long the episodes are

[00:11:21] are we assuming they're like half hour 40 minutes kind of thing yeah that's my assumption is like

[00:11:27] under half an hour like the the that 25 to 30 minute range is my assumption I haven't seen anything

[00:11:35] announced um but that's how long the original series was and they do seem to be paying pretty

[00:11:43] good homage homage to the old series how are you let me ask you this how are you going to consume

[00:11:49] them or are you just going to watch them as soon as they uh are um made available or are you going

[00:11:56] to just like bank a few in the binge them you know I've been debating that um so part of it it

[00:12:03] part of it is I haven't finished my rewatch of the original series um I try and watch them every Sunday

[00:12:11] or every Saturday morning with my son uh it's kind of our little tradition that when he and I

[00:12:17] both get up we watch uh X-Men and um we we hang out but you make them do 20 laps and then

[00:12:25] you watch X-Men yeah exactly I skewbs that have been the pool so it gets to yeah uh

[00:12:32] we're on the we're on the Bobby Drake iceman episode so now he knows why um well done well played

[00:12:40] no I think uh so yeah I've been debating it I'm probably just going to watch him as they come out

[00:12:47] um you know I how about you would do you have any uh plans for how you want to watch him

[00:12:54] I think I'll watch I think I'll watch whatever they release on the first day just to get a sense for

[00:13:02] like the look and feel and what's it going to look for and then I kind of may I kind of

[00:13:05] would feel like I might want to bank a few like where you spend a little bit of time

[00:13:10] you know you watch two or three and it's almost like watching a movie get to enjoy them kind

[00:13:15] of backed back if you will yeah we'll see we'll see what looks like yeah that's fair and that's I

[00:13:20] mean I so I will say one of the things about watching media and that sort of thing that I really

[00:13:26] something that I strongly believe in is like media and this this gets more complex as we go along

[00:13:35] but a lot of media is written written in a way that understands its release

[00:13:44] schedule um so what I mean by that is like take stranger things for example right

[00:13:52] stranger things is typically released as like a chunk of a season at a time and I think the writers

[00:13:58] kind of write with that in mind um versus something like Mandalorian or most of the Disney plus

[00:14:08] Marvel stuff that we've seen where it is released weekly and so they write with the with that

[00:14:13] in mind pace like the pacing of the story and all of that is built with the release schedule in mind

[00:14:21] so I do try and watch I try and watch it in its originally intended

[00:14:27] form as much as I can just because I think that release schedule is a part of that decision making

[00:14:35] now that obviously gets a little bit weird and has been getting weird as like things have changed

[00:14:41] you look at something like echo where it's released package changed a lot of times so yeah

[00:14:47] you know that that argument falls apart a little bit um but yeah I am a big proponent of watching

[00:14:54] whatever it may be um in its in as close to its original form as possible

[00:15:01] one of the um what are the other things I thought that was interesting about

[00:15:06] the anime series is that Marvel also released a comics guide for the X-Men animated series

[00:15:16] and so if you are watching it and there are how many seasons is it five?

[00:15:22] yeah five five seasons of that original series right and so you can then read the comic books

[00:15:28] the X-Men comic groups which correspond to the animated series which I think is kind of cool and would

[00:15:34] um you know bring someone like me who was like more of a on the comic side I never watched the

[00:15:40] original X-Men animated series I've seen parts of it but I never really got into it but knowing

[00:15:45] the comics which correspond to it would be like oh okay this is kind of a fun little like entry point

[00:15:52] so yeah yeah and I think it can work both ways right it can it can be a really cool entry point

[00:15:58] for people to get into comics and a cool entry point for people who are into comics to get

[00:16:03] into like oh these were the comics I read I really liked this series so let me go watch this part

[00:16:10] of that that animated series all include in the show notes I will include links to Marvel's

[00:16:18] articles about what to read because I think that it is a it is a good resource for for kind of

[00:16:25] crossing the streams there if you will I will say I do want to share my introduction

[00:16:34] to the X-Men animated series I was a very small child um when my dad actually got VHS's from

[00:16:44] pizza hut I'm pretty sure but it was it was like three episodes of the animated series and then

[00:16:56] it was like Stan Lee and several of the editors and writers from Marvel doing this roundtable

[00:17:08] discussion afterwards where they like talked about the series that like the comics that went into

[00:17:15] those episodes it was so cool and it was like it's this like foundational part of my my

[00:17:23] uh Marvel fandom because I remember wearing those wearing those VHS's out

[00:17:31] absolutely just wearing them thin that's awesome yeah it's very cool um in a little bit of bad news

[00:17:39] about the the X-Men 97 series literally late breaking news here I saw this as I was like getting ready

[00:17:50] to sit down to record I saw this news um and so I will say details are sparse um but

[00:18:00] showrunner bow demayo uh who he also worked on um moon night um and was the showrunner for X-Men 97

[00:18:12] he has been fired as of today the 12th after completing seasons one and two um

[00:18:22] everything is in the can and he was fired today um no public detail as to why um I'm sure things

[00:18:34] will surface over the next few weeks um it does mean that he will not be at the um

[00:18:41] who will not be at like the premiere or anything like that uh he also did delete he had

[00:18:47] several instagram posts where he was like answering questions from fans and um promoting the show

[00:18:53] those have all been deleted from social media so um definitely an interesting situation developing

[00:19:00] as we go here um but a little bit surprising right here on the eve of the premiere yeah I mean

[00:19:08] don't get me wrong it's a little bit different than if you're talking about live action

[00:19:12] directors actors like it's a little bit different but it's a little surprising it's not uncommon for

[00:19:22] uh it's not uncommon for writers to split once they're done you know once once the

[00:19:28] what the project is launched then they're done but the one of the articles I was reading on the

[00:19:32] hub quarter was like his company email was deactivated and cast and crew were told he was no

[00:19:39] longer on the project so nothing to speculate on um and it's it's you know a little again a

[00:19:48] little bit unusual to not take part in any of the premiere stuff or to you know in you know it's

[00:19:57] I don't know so we'll see what happens um yeah so uh not great but um and we'll see we'll see how it

[00:20:05] goes yeah yeah well um so yeah definitely looking forward to that um if if you guys are listening to

[00:20:16] this on the day it releases like I say tomorrow is xman 97's first release check it out I think

[00:20:24] I think it's gonna be a blast um and and yeah it should it should be a good time plus we get

[00:20:32] a little bit of xman in the mcu sort of do you have a marvel animation I guess that's good

[00:20:37] those enhanced in amma right so staying with disney plus a little bit uh we've got a couple

[00:20:45] of new stories about disney plus um David do you want to kind of talk about how the marvels has

[00:20:50] been doing over there on disney so from a box office perspective hasn't been great um it's the

[00:20:59] I don't have the final or I don't have the current final slash final like worldwide uh gross but

[00:21:05] it's the worst performance of all time worst the incredible Hulk um but it has found

[00:21:12] success on streaming so you know this one and this is one of the things that

[00:21:21] was subject to the uh union negotiations were like you know um we're things like you know getting paid

[00:21:28] on streaming and so forth and this is part where it's very very difficult but it sounds like in

[00:21:35] the first week there were 558 million minutes watched so like 5.3 million watch through so

[00:21:44] I was one of them because I certainly watched it again and um like how you like how you monetize that

[00:21:54] how you value that how you compensate you know the creatives on that is something to be seen

[00:22:00] so even though it didn't do great at the box office it has had legs in on disney plus and I kind of

[00:22:08] wonder if it's a little bit like of a marketing back to go back to pandemic black what it was released

[00:22:16] to people like Alchwait for it to come out on streaming and there's this element of like

[00:22:20] half I just wait like eight weeks I can watch it on streaming and I wonder yeah that will change

[00:22:26] things I wonder if it will go the way of oh yeah if you don't watch it in theater that's cool but

[00:22:32] you have to wait six months like I wonder if you could stagger things in a way because if if especially

[00:22:39] in the case of MCU if the if the shows and the movies build upon each other like oh I can't wait

[00:22:47] to watch the Marvels because Deadpool's coming out I need to have watched the mar- it's bad example but

[00:22:52] you know what I mean like yeah yeah wait to watch this other thing I have to be up on it if

[00:22:57] you want so I wonder if that will help change things in the future we'll say yeah I think I think

[00:23:02] disney across a lot of their fronts whether you look at Marvels or their mainline animation

[00:23:12] they're struggling at the box office and I think a lot of it is self-inflicted because they are

[00:23:17] so quick to stream and and so I think you know getting to a place where it's not streaming for like

[00:23:28] nine months right you have a three month release window yeah you have a three month release window

[00:23:36] where for three months it's in theaters only and if it bombs in the theaters maybe that ends a

[00:23:42] little bit early but then it's nowhere right and then after those three months you do maybe you

[00:23:48] do rental streaming I've seen a few other studios kind of go that route where for another like

[00:23:56] 90 days after that you can only rent it right so you have to pay 20 bucks a pop or whatever

[00:24:05] and you know mildly frustrating but at the same time if you want to get up on the thing you get

[00:24:09] up on the thing and so then you know you then your six months out from the release date

[00:24:18] you know maybe some stuff you're dropping on your on your monthly streamer on your disney plus

[00:24:23] maybe some stuff you're holding back and you're doing maybe a physical release at that point and

[00:24:28] then you wait another three months and now nine months down the road it's dropping on your

[00:24:33] on your monthly paid streamer it's gonna frustrate people at first if they if they choose to go

[00:24:40] and do something like that it's for sure gonna piss off some fans but I think for the long term

[00:24:51] success of these movies and the financial success especially I think that that is going to be a

[00:24:57] key strategy that they need to they need to adjust to right um we're still like at the

[00:25:05] like this very early nasiand state of how the intersection between theaters and streaming works right um

[00:25:15] and you know you've got some companies like Netflix which do no theaters you've got some companies

[00:25:20] like um amazon and apple which are doing a hybrid and I don't think they've quite figured out but

[00:25:28] you can imagine something like you lay out which is like okay in the theater you're seeing movie X

[00:25:36] it's on streaming and maybe you add some bonus stuff or an alternate cut and yeah if I saw

[00:25:43] in theater we're like oh let me watch let me watch the expanded version with some deleted scenes

[00:25:48] and if I'm brand new I will maybe watch it for the very first time you have to like they still have

[00:25:53] to figure out that formula you know that they will eventually get there but this is still like

[00:25:59] I mean we're in like your Disney plus here for yeah yeah you're for like they don't know what they're

[00:26:06] doing yeah yeah that pandemic time time warp is real man it's it's so wild to think that like

[00:26:13] we are only in year four and because all this stuff feels so

[00:26:22] so developed and so like like it's been there forever kind of thing but really four years is

[00:26:30] is still a very young age for something like a streamer or um you know uh a fundamental

[00:26:39] business practice the only being four years in is pretty young yeah and I would say that um

[00:26:46] I mean some might argue that the pandemic really fast forwarded the company's plans

[00:26:54] and help them to like well let's just go to streaming like we've got all this content we've

[00:26:58] got ESPN we've got all the Disney catalog sounds a great idea um streaming it's really expensive

[00:27:05] to do and pull off but I feel like you can you could you could look at it and see like this is

[00:27:17] this is the right thing to do if you're Disney with all this content getting there is just

[00:27:22] you're just gonna have growing pains you know you're like win on some things you're gonna lose in

[00:27:26] some things you're gonna like not release blackwood on theaters you get sued by the star because

[00:27:32] like so you know it's just gonna happen you know they they'd just figured out even even the content

[00:27:37] of the release so we talked about last time animated series super easy to do like all right let's

[00:27:43] bang out some what if let's bang out some X-Men 97 let's offer that content um you know how stuff

[00:27:50] gets integrated do you do spotlight stuff all that they just have to like sort it out but I feel

[00:27:55] like we'll get there it's gonna take a little time for sure I certainly agree and I think um

[00:28:02] I think we are getting there and you know I I I called this from my initial review of the marbles

[00:28:11] I said that it was going to it was gonna be the one that that people were gonna watch at home

[00:28:17] and and I think that that's coming true I think um I think the the promotion struggles that

[00:28:25] it had because of the strikes if you guys remember I mean it came out literally days after the actor

[00:28:32] strike wrapped up like I'm used so bad. Bre Larson had Bre Larson and Mon Vellani and Tiana

[00:28:39] Parish had like two days to go out and do some social media hits before the movie released.

[00:28:44] That's such a bomber man. Yeah it would have done way more revenue if they could have just been

[00:28:50] like but whatever it is yeah so yeah go go check that out on on Disney Plus I think um it's

[00:28:58] it's definitely worth the watch if you haven't watched it already go watch it it's super fun I haven't

[00:29:04] rewatched it yet just because uh I've been busy but um but definitely go check it out go be one of

[00:29:10] the five million people who's rewatched it um so on the flip side of that other direction where we're

[00:29:20] taking things that were released on streaming and we're releasing them elsewhere um Falcon and

[00:29:27] Winter Soldier as well as Moon Knight are getting um steel book uh physical releases so special

[00:29:36] addition steel books um that that come with 4k blue rays sure it's got specials in it I know

[00:29:44] that there's like some like little cards in it that have like production stills and stuff on them

[00:29:49] the steel books are beautiful they're they're really really well designed um there's also some

[00:29:55] some stuff on the Star Wars side that's also getting some physical releases alongside this um but

[00:30:00] um but yeah definitely definitely cool to see them expanding the availability of physical media

[00:30:11] for some of these these streamer um series that honestly were really good like like those two

[00:30:18] Falcon and Winter Soldier season one and Moon Knight those are banger seasons of television

[00:30:25] yeah I'm looking forward to especially um after watching Civil War and uh I'm looking forward to

[00:30:34] a Falcon and Winter Soldier I need to rewatch that oh yeah man yeah I think this joins I think

[00:30:40] Juan division already had a physical release if memory serves it gets right um so that that adds

[00:30:48] to I don't think what if or anything has had a physical release yet but um but cool to see and

[00:30:54] and for the collectors out there like myself um kind of some some cool little collector's items you

[00:31:00] can pick up plus uh you know blue rays will work when uh the internet shuts down

[00:31:07] to show you

[00:31:09] it's super dark did you have like did you have like did you have back in the day like an extensive

[00:31:17] you know blue ray DVD like collection oh I still do yeah my yeah uh actually my wife and I

[00:31:28] were just trying to figure out where we could put it because uh the child keeps getting into it so

[00:31:34] yeah put them in the pool it can't get into the pool right um yeah the physical release is like

[00:31:42] God bless Disney for ringing out every dollar from the series but looking at the one of the

[00:31:47] one of the links you sent or you added to the notes like it looks cool I

[00:31:52] I there's something it's hard to describe but there's something it's like owning a physical comic book

[00:32:01] versus like the digital one like I liked it's nice to be able to flip the pages and read the notes

[00:32:07] and hold the disc and see the extra stuff that kind of comes along with it and like you're saying

[00:32:13] like oh but you know have big network outage can't access the internet but guess what works

[00:32:18] blue ray player or DVD player or VHS or laser disk

[00:32:24] well and yeah in the 4k version of these are going for 45 bucks which it's about four months

[00:32:33] of Disney plus so um you know for those of you who didn't want to sign up for Disney plus

[00:32:42] um I suppose you save some money if you if you just buy these or email me or Ryan and we will

[00:32:51] give you our Disney plus login I'm kidding we're not kidding yeah I think they're cracking down on

[00:32:57] that David we got to watch out for that oh sorry that last comment all right well um before we get

[00:33:08] on with with our last couple of news stories here I do want to cut to a brief commercial break so

[00:33:14] catch us after the break and uh we will wrap up with some award season fun times see after the

[00:33:21] break it's amazing that you never see these heroes hydrate I mean there's no way that they went

[00:33:26] through the whole battle of New York without needing to crush a water break or something I know for

[00:33:29] me I can't even make it through the work day without my water bottle for those days where water alone

[00:33:34] just doesn't cut it I love to add some liquid IV to the make their little tubes make it super

[00:33:38] convenient to toss them in a backpack and go on an adventure for me the lemon lime flavor is really

[00:33:43] the best it's almost like a little margarita but it helps your hangover instead of causing one

[00:33:48] one stick of liquid IV in 16 ounces of water hydrates you two times faster and more efficiently

[00:33:54] than water alone real people real flavor real hydrating get 20% off when you go to liquid IV.com

[00:34:02] and use the code puny pod at checkout that's 20% off of anything in order when you shop better hydration

[00:34:08] today using promo code puny pod that's pu and y p o d at liquid IV dot com welcome back I hope

[00:34:17] you guys are feeling nice and moist and hydrated and buying all that liquid IV uh I need to re-record

[00:34:26] that ad that's an old old ad read but I need to so I need to get us a new one

[00:34:31] so as promised though we did want to talk a little bit about award season um we were on the back

[00:34:41] end of the award season the um the Grammys have happened and our future dazzler has done her thing

[00:34:53] at the Grammys um and uh but this this last weekend was the Academy Awards or the Oscars if you will

[00:35:07] and the MCU added a Oscar winner to its ranks um so um I guess it probably would be better if I

[00:35:21] didn't say who won right away because that that's just good podcasting if you save the juicy bits for

[00:35:27] last um so nominated for Oscars from the MCU we had um the in the best actress in a lead role a net

[00:35:41] betting was nominated um and quick mention for a non MCU Marvel project that also got nominated as

[00:35:53] the whole movie um across the spider verse was nominated for best feature it did not end up winning

[00:35:59] it lost out to um boy with the blue hair in which I believe was a gear model Toro joint if memory serves

[00:36:08] um nominated for best actor in a lead role we had um MCU veterans Jeffrey Wright who you

[00:36:21] may recognize his voice from the what if series he does the uh he voices uh the watcher

[00:36:27] and also nominated for best actor in a lead role was cradley bootler uh Bradley Cooper um who you

[00:36:38] may recognize his voice from doing racquet raccoon um and then uh the best actor in a supporting role

[00:36:50] um this actually I ended up watching this presentation just happened to turn this one on

[00:36:56] I did too yeah I did same thing like this weird like it was so cool how they did like the five

[00:37:04] supporting actors in the past it's awesome it was super super cool and actually it was super super marvel too

[00:37:12] so standing on stage to announce the um the nominees were were Sam Rockwell who we all know and

[00:37:23] love is Justin Hammer and he announced Robert Downey Jr which is which as a marvel nerd I was like

[00:37:30] that's Justin Hammer announcing uh Tony Stark um but Sam Rockwell announced Robert Downey Jr's

[00:37:37] nomination Mahershala Ali who will be our blade eventually but was also cottonmouth um announced

[00:37:44] to mark ruffalo uh Kihoi Kwan who you may know as obi from the Loki series um announced sterling

[00:37:53] K brown who I remember was in the MCU but I can't remember who he played do you remember David

[00:37:58] who sterling he was in black panther and he was to chakka's brother I that's right yep yeah he was

[00:38:08] killmonger's death yep um and then Tim Robbins who I I forgot that he was also in a Marvel movie

[00:38:19] he was in Howard the Duck the Howard the Duck movie in the 80s he was also on stage um and

[00:38:29] uh he announced I for I think you read he announced deniro's nomination and then not marvel at all

[00:38:37] though god I wish you would be in the marvel universe somewhere was Christophe Waltz

[00:38:43] uh who announced Ryan Gosling's nomination who Ryan Gosling is also not in the MC so

[00:38:50] but it was a very very MCU heavy stage at that point um and

[00:38:58] uh if you listen back to our discussion of civil war when we're trying to recall academy award winners

[00:39:07] I would now be right that robber downie junior was an academy award winner

[00:39:10] I was not right at the time of recording but I would be now because uh robber downie junior did win

[00:39:17] best supporting actor for obi you are correct he uh is the winner congrats to robber down junior

[00:39:25] um kudos jeff you're right rather Cooper Mark Ruffalo struling kick round and net bending nominated

[00:39:34] five times who've never won that's a rough that's rough um you missed you missed one of the key

[00:39:44] announcers though who is that um well you know america's favorite marvel character national treasure

[00:39:57] nick cage and i'm looking out but i can't remember he presented for but i cannot tell you

[00:40:06] how excited i was how intense he was and this was great but like i missed that one that's fantastic though

[00:40:15] that's great um but yeah lots of great like uh lots of really really really good actors who are

[00:40:24] recognized by the academy you know we started seeing it i want to say once we got in like

[00:40:31] thorier it's like oh wait who's in this movie like who's directing and can't it rannels doing it like

[00:40:38] huh and then ever since then i mean especially some of them have been like a like a just a huge like

[00:40:49] aggregation of academy award nominees and winners um i mean the question i have for you

[00:40:58] um two questions to have you know one i mean Robert de june is great is a great actor Jeffrey

[00:41:07] Wright Bradley Cooper Ruffalo struling kick round like is there can you think of someone from the MCU

[00:41:16] that you feel like oh this is a really good actor and all things but they've never been

[00:41:22] recognized and i've realized that's like a big question alternatively

[00:41:30] question i would have is you're nominated for like best supporting actor

[00:41:34] what MCU actor do you want to introduce you

[00:41:40] to the crowd you take either question hmm yeah i think the so to answer the first question of like

[00:41:51] which actor from the MCU probably deserves more than they have they've received so far um i think

[00:42:02] i think it's the answer is probably Tom hitleston um i don't believe he's ever won any of the

[00:42:10] major awards i think he's won like golden globes and stuff but i don't believe he's won like

[00:42:16] um an Emmy or uh academy award or yeah and academy award or anything so i do think um you know he

[00:42:26] he he is a very talented actor even beyond his work in the MCU like obviously we love him as Loki but

[00:42:35] um he does he does present some some pretty awesome work and in the MCU alone some pretty nuanced

[00:42:45] work too so um i definitely think i'd love to see him get get some some uh some play there for

[00:42:57] sure that's a great call that's a great call um obviously i mean if i were if i were getting the award

[00:43:06] i want to Robert Tammy Jr. to bring me on like i think that's the easy one but that's a no-brainer

[00:43:13] hmm okay i like it i like it um how about you any anybody that uh for either of those questions

[00:43:21] either somebody that that you think has maybe been unjustly kept back or maybe deserves more shine

[00:43:30] or who you would want to bring you on stage for for your academy award i think um

[00:43:37] um you picked a pretty good one there have been a lot of folks in the MCU that been nominated

[00:43:44] i like john slattery i really liked him in madman like him as Howard Stark you kind of see him

[00:43:51] in a particular role where he could kind of in a like supporting role where he'd be pretty good and

[00:43:56] would shine um and then as far as who to present me whoof um

[00:44:08] huh i

[00:44:13] man that's a lot of choices there

[00:44:15] um i'm gonna say de pa dista just okay that'd be fun i mean he he seems like he seems like

[00:44:28] he's genuinely fun and like would bring you up in a fun way gregarious outgoing sense of humor

[00:44:34] like reading a card is like i don't know any idea who this joker is all we do is share same

[00:44:40] first name but you know what someone bought me an extra large size tuxedo and i'm just gonna read

[00:44:47] this card and i do not care so oh man i missed i should it my i'm gonna change my answer it should

[00:44:55] have been vindiesel uh just because then then i get oh jeez you're so cheap and predictable

[00:45:03] yeah

[00:45:05] indies will be fun one yeah

[00:45:07] be fun one uh

[00:45:11] oh john c rally would be fun yeah um

[00:45:16] just john c rally he's had to have been nominated at this point i don't think so i don't think so

[00:45:24] he was great boogie nights yeah he was great boogie nights

[00:45:29] he's he's good in whatever i mean a lot of people think of him as like dumb comedy just because

[00:45:35] of all the work he did with will feral and um he was very good in that but he he can do some good

[00:45:42] work elsewhere like his work in uh Chicago was really well really good like to do a musical

[00:45:50] that well he's he's a good actor as well um this uh this part of the podcast has been brought to

[00:45:58] you by tangents tangents all your personal conversational needs while moving on from really good

[00:46:07] actors uh the uh the final awards uh of the season have also been the nominations have been announced

[00:46:19] is it are we uh talking tonies uh no uh uh the magical is going to sweep the tonies but

[00:46:27] grandmys no tailor swift our future dazzler has already uh rocked the Grammys

[00:46:35] baffes have already gone uh we move on to the golden raspberry awards a k a the razzies

[00:46:49] um for those who don't know the golden raspberry awards are essentially the the anti awards they are

[00:46:57] the worst of of all things they they they are the awards that you don't well maybe you do want to win

[00:47:05] i think there are some of these and and as i read through some of these nominees that uh

[00:47:10] unfortunately marvel shares the stage with um i think there's some of these folks who are

[00:47:15] probably proud to have been nominated for razzie if i'm being totally honest um so marvel has never

[00:47:22] been nominated for a razzie before so incredible hulk skinned by without uh getting any nominations

[00:47:34] Thor love and thunder although i love that movie um but that never got anything Thor Darkworld

[00:47:42] never got a razzie um no no marvel movie has gotten uh uh no mcu movie i should say has ever gotten

[00:47:52] a razzie nomination um mobius did which is a marvel movie of course and um i'm somewhat surprised

[00:48:02] i wonder if madame web was maybe not released within this uh award cycle for the razzies maybe it'll

[00:48:09] it'll show up next award cycle but um but marvel studios did earn a four nominations from the golden

[00:48:21] razz berries in the category of worst prequel remake ripoff or sequel the nominees are exorcist

[00:48:35] believer expend four bulls indiana jones diolidestiny winnie the poo blood and honey

[00:48:45] and and man in the was quantum mania

[00:48:51] out um so yeah that that's what quantum mania is in with is uh a fourth expendables movie which

[00:49:04] anytime you put a number in place of a letter uh you know you're in for trouble just ask fan force stick

[00:49:13] uh although i guess 11 wasn't too bad but uh i like indian jones the dial testiny

[00:49:22] i haven't watched it yet but i've heard it's really really good i just haven't had a chance to watch

[00:49:27] it um but i have heard it's really good so hopefully hopefully that's like the the outcast i mean

[00:49:33] winnie the poo blood and honey was the uh was the this the uh copyright is up

[00:49:41] capitalization horror movie winnie the poo movie um exorcist believer i've heard was real bad

[00:49:51] but um yeah so that's what a man in the was quantum mania is hanging out with these days

[00:49:58] um moving on to the flip side of our uh the the academy award we just talked about

[00:50:06] uh we've got worse supporting actor in our nominees are mel Gibson from confidential

[00:50:13] informant francisco nero as the pope in the pope's exorcist sliced alone in expendables hey that's

[00:50:22] another MCU entry um not the expendables but sliced alone was in the MCU and we have two nominees

[00:50:34] from the MCU here in the worst supporting actor we have michael doggles as hank pimp in antman

[00:50:42] and the wasp quantum mania and we have bill murie as i don't remember his character name but he played

[00:50:50] bill murie in antman and wasp quantum mania he was yeah he's pretty much bill murie

[00:51:00] yeah this is yeah this is a wild list because michael doggles has won an academy award no Gibson

[00:51:10] i think is one two bill murie was nominated and still alone one one like

[00:51:18] these are not crappy actors now no don't now i realize that some of this is just to send up the characters

[00:51:26] it is um ironic that there are two from him in the wasp quantum mania

[00:51:34] um this is a spoiler preview for when we get to that movie that is going to be in my bottom third

[00:51:42] um yeah bill murie was he was he was unfortunate yeah he was off the hook he was he was that yeah

[00:51:52] it's a rough one i don't think i do i remember watching the theater and texting you

[00:51:57] and then i don't think i've watched it since i am uh looking forward to seeing that without one and

[00:52:03] to see how how it's uh marinated over time so yeah for sure for sure and then in our worst director

[00:52:15] category we have rease frake waterfield for winnie the poo blood and honey

[00:52:24] we have david gordon green for exorcist believer scott wow uh expendant foreboles

[00:52:34] and ben weatley mag to the trench and then you guys probably could guess it by now

[00:52:41] but pay and read for antman and the wasp quantum mania

[00:52:47] um i will say pay and read did not do a bad job with the antman series overall

[00:52:56] i still i i i i i have not rewatch quantum mania since watching it in the theaters

[00:53:03] i liked it in the theaters um

[00:53:08] i don't know i and man now i now i feel like i need to go back and watch it because

[00:53:14] i mean if it got bad enough to get razzies that's uh that's pretty rough yeah it's not um

[00:53:22] i know part of it is like you'll watch him you know you go watch big blockbuster in the theater

[00:53:26] you're popcorn elevated seat you see warmer i mean you've got a cocktail whatever

[00:53:31] and you're like this is great and he watched it again you think about it like

[00:53:35] i know what the mania was not great uh i yeah i'm in the i don't know like that one

[00:53:44] i think it gets it gets some bad press and publicity because it's tied to the quantum mania stuff

[00:53:54] that a lot of people don't like yeah and they try to shoehorn in the cane character

[00:54:03] and i i don't know like it's it's it's it's you know rewatching the first time in a movie we

[00:54:11] we will soon review the second one and it just seemed especially the first one like they tucked

[00:54:17] in a lot of the quantum realm stuff and it's been this delivery mechanism for i think a story in

[00:54:25] line that a lot of people just don't like and the time travel and the quantum realm all that

[00:54:32] stuff i think is confusing for some folks yeah and um not as fun not as lighthearted

[00:54:41] as the original so yeah i definitely i i think the multiverse experiment

[00:54:48] i hate to say this because to me it didn't to me this is what i'm about to say is not true

[00:54:54] but say it i think the multiverse experiment failed um i i think ultimately it just did not click

[00:55:05] with general audiences um you get some fun a little bit of fun stuff with like Loki and and that's

[00:55:13] done in a yeah i think i think the uh the fact that it was done on Disney Plus makes it lower stakes

[00:55:23] and there's like this idea that it doesn't matter hmm um and so like it it makes it a little bit

[00:55:34] i don't know easier to digest than it happening in movies maybe um

[00:55:40] i i hold those i hold those multiverse movies in such like such a warm place in my heart

[00:55:47] whether it's multiverse of madness or um or quantumania um i i do love those movies very very

[00:55:58] dearly um but i also do recognize that it it is challenging and it is it is like

[00:56:06] it's grandma takes your lunch money type of movies right it's uh they are they are

[00:56:13] maybe a step too far for the for the dad's brads and chads who are getting into superhero movies

[00:56:22] and just want to watch you know the guy in the iron suit uh fight with the super soldier um

[00:56:32] you know it it it can be chow like it to get into that cerebral place where you have to think about

[00:56:40] different worlds entirely existing it's it is it is challenging uh for sure yeah yeah i would agree

[00:56:49] with that like even as a uh marvel nerd and fan it's tough for me like it's not it's not intuitive

[00:56:59] and you know what's i think again we could talk about where you know once we get to phase four and

[00:57:06] phase five we could talk about where things kind of slid and kind of where they could of course

[00:57:12] corrected if you will they were all in on the quantumania stuff on king get it like that's the

[00:57:25] direction we want to go i to at no point in time was it really sort of really resonating with people

[00:57:31] so we'll see i mean we'll talk me again once we see what come what Avengers five looks like

[00:57:38] you know what the rest of the phase looks like we'll see what um how the course correct

[00:57:43] but yeah anyway none of the again if am in the wasqueant of any it is like the worst thing you ever see

[00:57:52] okay fine like it's not that bad it's not it's not unwatchable you know it's not you know it's not

[00:57:59] fantastic but it's not like oh god like what are some of the winners i've seen like

[00:58:07] stark you know and like come on yeah or even like like some of those movies are good in that

[00:58:13] they're bad like charcinate or snakes on a plane or some of those where like they're they're so bad

[00:58:18] they're good but um i don't think anything in the mcu has fallen the my like what i hold up is the

[00:58:26] poster child of a bad movie um and i don't know if you're familiar with it but valerian in the city

[00:58:33] of a thousand planets is like the the pinnacle of bad movies for me it's a sci-fi movie

[00:58:42] and it just goes nowhere and it is so plotting and just it's just awful and it it's not even like

[00:58:54] so bad it's funny like there's there's definitely movies you watch for that but it's just this like

[00:59:01] like that is a truly bad movie to me is valerian in the city of a thousand planets

[00:59:09] and it's a comic book movie there was there was some moment in my mind where you were leading up

[00:59:16] I was like what a friance has like rogue one and i'm like oh man so like i like rogue one

[00:59:23] I'm kind of bit like no i yeah those i don't get me wrong there aren't so many of those

[00:59:30] what i refer to as awful and awesome i refer to it as awful some movies of that are terrible

[00:59:38] and cheesy and like doesn't make sense and there's a big plot hole or whatever and you still

[00:59:44] love it and that's fine um and i think that some of the razzie stuff is a little bit of a

[00:59:50] send up of that like yeah you're right like you can't like all the guys behind

[00:59:56] Winnie the Pooblod and honey knew that they were gonna get a razzie totally they're probably

[01:00:00] gunning for a razzie if they're being honest yeah totally yeah right like um

[01:00:07] i know michael Douglas mel Gibson Bill Murray so i still only have like i don't know eight or

[01:00:12] nine i can't get more nominations are not terrible actors are just you know they're making

[01:00:18] in front of the roles so yeah well uh that's a fun place to end i think you know and if this is

[01:00:25] the low point if this is you know if quantum anius the low point for the mc well take it because

[01:00:31] honestly it's it's not that low it's it's not uh it's not morbid time um for anything like that

[01:00:41] um so shots got it morbidous um so yeah uh that that wraps up our kind of award season um roundup

[01:00:54] and we don't have any trailer park this this week we're we're patiently waiting for some trailers

[01:01:01] to come out here soon for um some various projects that are coming out but um
