Skeleton Crew Ep 6 Breakdown and Nostalgic Nuggets

It looks like he has his Christmas Boba Fett sweater on there. That's awesome. I love it. That is sure. That's for sure. Our good friend Ken Bishop is joining us from multiple Star Wars podcasts. I'll let him say all of them because I don't want to get it.

[00:00:51] one of them wrong, but Nick is out sick again. My man just he loves getting the illnesses. He cannot stop himself from doing it. So he's like disturbed down with the sickness. That's what our opening song should have been is down with this. So yeah. Yeah. So unfortunately, my man Nick is a little under the weather, but I still wanted to get out week or episode six in a timely fashion of the Skeleton Crew to us.

[00:01:20] So here's my man Ken. Go ahead and tell us Ken all the different places that we can find you because I know there's more than one. Yeah, sure thing. So Wednesday nights, I'm usually on on the YouTubes with Mike Hinton. We co-host the Inflatable Falcon. I have my own little show called Rambling Star Wars Fan and an even littler show called Bounty Hunting Across the Galaxy with Todd and Ken. Those are the three main places. And then I've like like tonight, you know, I've jumped into a couple podcasts here and there.

[00:01:49] So thanks for having me on. Happy New Year. Happy New Year to you too as well. Did you did you make any resolutions any New Year's resolutions?

[00:01:57] I was I made the resolution not to make resolutions. That's probably the only one that I'll ever be able to stick to. Yeah, I the only one I made was that I was going to write 2025 anytime I wrote the date and not 2024.

[00:02:09] And at almost didn't come. I almost broke my New Year's resolution today by I almost wrote 2024 down, but I stopped myself. I was very proud of myself. I was like, nope, it's 2025. So there we go. Yeah.

[00:02:24] Welcome. Yeah. Welcome to 2025, everybody. This is our first episode of the new year. And we're talking again about the skeleton crew because in my opinion, it is top three new Disney plus Star Wars shows so far.

[00:02:49] All through all six episodes. Yeah. I'm huge, huge fan of the Mandalorian. It's still my number one.

[00:02:57] I think Andor is up there. And then I think this would be three for me. I did like Ahsoka. So that one's not that would be a close fourth. But I'm going all the way up to three with this one. I I love the writing of this one so far. What about you, Ken? What do you think of it?

[00:03:12] I definitely like it. I'm just wondering when you said the new shows, are you talking about the the other little documentaries they've done? They did a documentary on industrial lights and magic and most recently the one about John Williams and and the music.

[00:03:25] No, no, I'm just talking like Disney Star Wars shows like show shows.

[00:03:30] Yeah, that makes sense. Book of Boba Fett and skeleton crew right now.

[00:03:37] This is skeleton crew. What's the other one that came out right before this? The one about the the old.

[00:03:41] Oh, the acolyte. The acolyte. Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the acolyte. I didn't I didn't like that. I liked the concept.

[00:03:48] I didn't enjoy the writing of it. I felt it missed a lot in my opinion.

[00:03:53] And I know one of the things that I think is cool about this in comparison to the acolyte is goes to show that within the Star Wars galaxy, there's so much room for different kinds of stories.

[00:04:03] Yeah. Oh, 100 percent. And the fact that, you know, people were saying Star Wars can't live without the Skywalkers.

[00:04:12] Well, Mandalorian, although they did have a Luke scene in it and it was an epic Luke scene, I will add.

[00:04:19] It was the Luke that we wanted, not the Luke that we got in episodes, a movie episode seven, eight and nine.

[00:04:27] It was the Luke that we the B.A. Luke Skywalker that came in and took no prisoners.

[00:04:33] Luke Skywalker. But Mandalorian did fine by itself.

[00:04:40] Andor did phenomenal. And it was also and or completely different storytelling as well.

[00:04:46] You know, and or was like a war story with some Star Wars stuff thrown in there.

[00:04:52] And I feel this is very similar to it.

[00:04:55] This is a very vintage feel because they love throwing in all those 80 movies references.

[00:05:02] I'm still waiting for somebody to say you'll shoot your eye out, kid.

[00:05:05] I'm still waiting. I'm still waiting for for someone.

[00:05:10] Maybe once they get the ship back to the planet, they'll look down at the speedometer and see how many miles they put on it and say,

[00:05:16] we'll just put the put the thrust in reverse and we'll take all the miles off of it.

[00:05:21] I'm waiting for that to happen.

[00:05:22] I think we also have a chance of hearing Neil say something to the effect of where we're going.

[00:05:27] We don't need roads. Yes.

[00:05:29] Oh, that would be great.

[00:05:30] That would be great if he says that.

[00:05:32] And people were arguing about Urkel saying, did I do that?

[00:05:38] Jaleel White.

[00:05:39] But somebody said that he has spent his entire adulthood trying to distance himself from that TV series, which I don't.

[00:05:47] I mean, I understand you played a nerd and you were famous for being a nerd and you don't want to be a nerd.

[00:05:53] I get that.

[00:05:54] But I'm hoping that at this day and age, which I don't think people can do, but I'm hoping that at this day and age, people can separate character from people and he can enjoy what he did.

[00:06:06] I mean, we had so many different Star Wars situations where people hated the the actor who played Jar Jar Binks.

[00:06:16] He was an actor, you know, and like when he got his other role in one of the series later and they're like, oh, this is his redemption arc.

[00:06:24] He didn't need a redemption arc.

[00:06:26] He did nothing wrong.

[00:06:28] Society needed the redemption arc to say we are sorry for being jerks to you 20 years ago when we blamed you, the actor, for Jar Jar Binks being a horrible character.

[00:06:39] But I'll put my milk crate away and get off of my milk box now.

[00:06:45] But yeah, you know, Andor was such a fun and different story.

[00:06:51] Skeleton Crew, another fun and different story.

[00:06:54] I mean, we saw one lightsaber so far and they opened it up backwards.

[00:06:59] So it's not like each of us would do.

[00:07:02] If we were tweens with a lightsaber, we would probably pierce our own foot.

[00:07:06] We would 100 percent because you don't know which way the blade comes out.

[00:07:11] Oops, the wrong way.

[00:07:14] So, yeah.

[00:07:15] And I think on this show, I'm going to coin a new term.

[00:07:17] OK.

[00:07:17] So I'm going to guess you've you've watched videos where they they they they display, quote unquote, Easter eggs.

[00:07:24] Yes.

[00:07:25] Well, for this show, I think we should start referring to them as nostalgia nuggets.

[00:07:29] I love it.

[00:07:30] Because there are these so there's so many little winks and nods towards other things like you were talking about.

[00:07:36] Mm hmm.

[00:07:37] You know, hoping that that somebody mentions that you'll shoot your eye out.

[00:07:41] Yeah.

[00:07:41] You know, these these connections, the things that we hold near and dear show up in the Star Wars galaxy.

[00:07:47] That'd be really fun.

[00:10:28] And it's still entertaining and educational for me.

[00:10:31] I like that a lot.

[00:10:32] Puny Pod Boys, they talk all about Marvel.

[00:10:35] They're re-breaking down every single Marvel movie in order.

[00:10:39] And then we have the Buena Vista Boys who are doing the exact same thing as Scraping the Vault.

[00:10:45] But they are doing it about old just Buena Vista movies that Disney released in the 50s and 60s and 70s and stuff like that.

[00:10:54] But they're breaking down those movies in the time frame and all that good stuff.

[00:10:57] And last thing, over on the YouTubes, Ears Up is now streaming all of those shows and this one on their YouTube channel as well.

[00:15:25] A pet in Star Wars Resistance was a creature originally designed 20 years earlier for the Phantom Menace.

[00:15:32] So this little guy here, this funky looking pet thing, whatever, apparently was designed, created 20 years earlier, but they never used it.

[00:15:41] And Mark Hamill has voiced other Star Wars characters.

[00:15:44] Can you think of, you know, which ones he has voiced?

[00:15:47] I can think of at least one.

[00:15:49] And that was Bulio from The Rise of Skywalker.

[00:17:21] I remember when I watched it the first, you know, when it first came out in 99 or whatever year it was when it first came out.

[00:17:29] I thought he was a fun character.

[00:17:30] I thought he was goofy.

[00:17:32] Totally a great nod to Goofy.

[00:17:34] And the Charlie Chaplin add to that is fun.

[00:17:39] But the fact that they used him as the scapegoat and made him make all the decisions, that's where I'm, like, mad at him for.

[00:20:40] It was a short episode, which is what Nick doesn't like about streaming shows.

[00:20:45] Oh, I can appreciate that because one of the things that you know about me is I have this

[00:20:53] thirst for more Star Wars.

[00:20:54] I would be happy sitting down and watching a two-hour episode every week.

[00:20:58] Every week.

[00:20:59] And at the same time, the shorter episodes gives us more to talk about in between.

[00:21:07] I would love two-hour episodes every week and give us lots to talk about every week.

[00:21:12] But this episode also, this episode was directed by Bryce Dallas Howard.

[00:21:18] And you could even tell the first Mandalorian episode that she directed.

[00:21:23] I think it was like episode two or three.

[00:21:25] It had more heart and more feeling to it.

[00:21:27] And this was another episode that had a lot of heart and feeling to it.

[00:21:32] It didn't have a lot of advancing the story until the very end because everything just took place right there on the planet.

[00:21:41] But it advanced the characters a lot, which was really good because it had a lot of good.

[00:21:48] This Stacy's mom was getting to me, man.

[00:21:50] It had a lot of good character building, which I really, really enjoyed because now we got to know a little bit more about the kids.

[00:21:57] And we got to really appreciate the kids and all of their shortcomings and strongcomings.

[00:22:04] What's the opposite of shortcomings?

[00:22:05] All of their strengths.

[00:22:07] Strengths.

[00:22:07] There you go.

[00:22:08] Look at that.

[00:22:09] Boom.

[00:22:09] That's why you're here, Ken.

[00:22:11] So, and I do enjoy starting the show off.

[00:22:15] When the preview talks about something that we haven't seen for five episodes, you know that's the Chekhov's gun that's going to come up in that episode.

[00:22:44] All the kids are sliding down because Wynn pulled that trap door to get away so that Jod wouldn't trap them and capture them.

[00:23:01] So, that was a fun tribute to that as well as what else Star Wars wise.

[00:23:11] The Luke Skywalker slide on Bespin as well on Cloud City.

[00:23:20] And I'm sure our good friend Harrison Ford, when he wore his hat and his whip, he, as Indiana Jones, also went down a slide in at least one, probably two or three of the Harrison Ford Indiana Jones movies.

[00:36:49] Um, and we also find out more why KB has never said no to her before, because she was

[00:36:54] afraid that if she stands up to Fern, that she will, uh, not be friends with her anymore.

[00:37:01] And then she won't have any friends again.

[00:37:03] Um, so she finally stands up to her, not because she wants to, but because she knows that her

[00:37:09] cybernetics are shutting down and she won't be able to climb this.

[00:37:13] So it's a great episode, uh, especially for people with disabilities of some sort.

[00:37:19] And even like kids with disabilities to see that, you know, you're not always limited

[00:37:25] in your stuff.

[00:37:26] She's able to, she can do things that they couldn't do.

[00:37:30] And it's the same thing.

[00:37:31] You know, you may not be able to walk as well, but maybe your brain is stronger or things

[00:37:35] like that.

[00:37:35] So it's great for, for kids with disabilities to see, Oh, I can be just as important and

[00:37:42] just as valuable as Fern who can climb up this wall.

[00:37:47] Um, so, uh, so yeah, so they have a little breakdown and actually with that in mind, I do want to

[00:37:53] mention, so we've been watching star Wars since the seventies and we've, you know, put

[00:37:57] ourselves into the movie as characters and whether we played with our action figures or

[00:38:02] dressed up as them, or even just watching the movie saying, what would it be like to

[00:38:05] be Han Solo?

[00:38:06] We're now talking about a star Wars movie that's featuring children.

[00:38:11] It's, it's a much shorter leap for a 10 year old to think about what it's like to be another

[00:38:17] 10 year old than it is for a 10 year old to say, I want to be like 19 year old Luke Skywalker

[00:38:22] or 30 year old Han Solo or whatever.

[00:38:45] the actors how to act with the actors and the acolyte were so just straight and boring

[00:38:50] and whatever that I didn't feel the emotion out of them.

[00:38:54] And I know they were playing Jedi.

[00:38:56] So they're supposed to be emotionless, but we've seen Jedi with emotions and things like

[00:39:00] And they could have, they could have directed them differently, but these kids are, are doing

[00:39:04] a phenomenal job of acting and really showing their emotions and their feelings and all that

[00:39:09] good stuff.

[00:39:10] So for a kid to see this, it would be great.

[00:39:12] I mean, and you know, George Lucas said he wrote star Wars for kids.

[00:39:16] So now it's finally four kids starring kids.

[00:39:18] So it's like a, you can't do that on television, but for star Wars fans.

[00:52:01] And we see that how both groups are having their own trauma and trouble and how both groups have to work through it at the same time.

[00:52:15] And he explains to her, no, not everybody can do things the way you can.

[00:52:41] To Wim, he's finding the servo that he needs to take out to help KD.

[00:52:47] They have a great heart to heart about how Fern doesn't think about others.

[00:52:52] KD talks about her accident.

[00:52:54] So now we find out why she has the prosthetics, why she has the, what did she call them all the way back?

[00:53:00] Augmentation.

[00:53:01] The augs.

[00:53:01] Yeah.

[00:53:02] The augs.

[00:53:03] And that she had some kind of an accident.

[00:53:06] And that's what caused her implants.

[00:53:09] And since her implants, she can't do the things that she could normally do.

[00:53:16] And she's afraid that if she stands up to Fern, that Fern won't be her friend.

[00:53:21] And then that's when she says, I will not have any friends again.

[00:55:17] So they jump onto the ship to the tow truck that's basically taking their ship away to the trash yards, which when we see the trash yards, that what's it called?

[00:55:32] The spa must produce a lot of trash because there were two giant trash trucks that dumped a whole bunch of trash onto the ground there.

[00:55:43] So those rich people are being.

[00:55:44] Well, I'm wondering, you know, we talked about the huts being there and the banking clan.

[00:55:47] Is this some sort of place where they also bring, you know, their victims?

[00:55:52] They bring the people that they want to get rid of.

[00:58:10] Like you believe these two girls realized how important each other was to them and that they were best friends.

[00:58:18] And they just both went through separate traumatic experiences at the same time.

[01:01:00] And he's like, it's not doing anything.

[01:01:05] And they can't take off because they're stuck.

[01:01:08] They finally get the jets running.

[01:01:12] I also went back to episode one just to make sure that I saw this right.

[01:01:17] But the engines, the entire show, all six episodes so far, were firing.

[01:01:28] And then at the very end, when they blew off the hull, they went from red to blue engines as well.

[01:01:38] And now the flames coming out were blue as opposed to red, which I'm sure has some color symbolism in there as well.

[01:10:47] And we're able to see in a very short period of time growth, development, understanding, challenge.

[01:10:59] The only thing that I'm afraid of, well, not afraid of, but the only thing that I'm not, whatever,

[01:11:12] It's such a good show, but it's two years in between each season because of just the shooting and style

[01:11:22] and the way that things are.

[01:11:24] So these 11-year-olds, they're like 11 and 12 now.

[01:11:28] Now, the next time we see them, they could be 15 or 16 years old for season two.

[01:11:34] And then if we have a season three, they're going to be like 19 by the time we see season three.

[01:11:39] And 19-year-olds can't pull off 13-year-olds.

[01:11:43] You know, like their facial hair is growing in halfway through an episode.

[01:11:48] Unless they do this like Harry Potter and that they advance them along that way as well.

[01:11:53] So the story matches their growth spurts and their ages.
