The Monte Cristo, a Decadent Must-Try at Disneyland
Monte Cristo gooey goodness

Last week, while in line for a ride with my friend Lesly, I discovered she had never tried a Disneyland Monte Cristo. The Monte Cristo (a fried sandwich) is only available at Cafe Orleans ($$) and Blue Bayou ($$$). Both are Disneyland table service restaurants that require reservations and are a little pricier. Through the Disneyland App, we were able to instantly make a lunch reservation for eight people at Cafe Orleans!

As always, my group shared some items. We started with $8 Pommes Frites and $7 Potato Leek Soup.

Pommes Frites

The Pommes Frites came tossed with parmesan cheese, garlic, and parsley, served with cajun spice remoulade. The really large basket of flavorful fries kept my hangry crew at bay while we waited for our main courses.

The Potato Leek Soup

The Soup was small and not great for sharing but really tasty with the extra bits on top and quite filling.

Monte Cristo

As our main course, we ordered a few of the $21 Monte Cristo Sandwiches. The Monte Cristo consisted of sliced turkey, ham, and swiss cheese fried in a light batter, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with berry puree. There were red grapes on the plate as well. The sandwich was a balance of sweet and salty. The batter was light, the fried outer crust was crunchy, and the inside was hot and gooey. The sweet berry puree was disappointingly thick, like jam from a jar.

Fried Chicken and Beignets

We also tried a seasonal item, the $21 Fried Chicken and Beignets, which were described as: buffalo tossed chicken thigh, sugar dusted beignets, cole slaw, and waffle fries. I was impressed with the generous serving of 4 beignets-  two plain, one powdered sugar, and one chocolate (crushed oreo crumbs). The buffalo chicken was saucy and not too spicy. The slaw was bland but the waffle fries were crispy and plentiful. The chocolate beignet was my favorite, while Lesly really liked the chicken.

It’s sometimes possible to get a walk-up reservation at Cafe Orleans, but if you have your heart set on eating there, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance through the app or online. We asked to be seated outside and it took a few extra minutes but was worth the wait.
