It's always fun to see what's new in the food department at Disneyland. As I was researching for my most recent trip, I came across two new items that share a truly surprising main ingredient: cauliflower.

When I think of Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante in Disneyland, I think of standard Mexican fare with generous portions. Their new$13.49 Cauliflower Tacos consists of three average size soft tacos filled with lightly cooked cauliflower, roasted pineapple cabbage slaw and avocado-pasilla cream, plus a wedge of lime and chips on the side. I'm certain most of you could have predicted this: the Cauliflower Tacos weren't great. The cauliflower was well coated in dry spices, but begging for something saucy. The acocado-pasilla cream should have filled the saucy gap but there was barely a drizzle of it and what there was was super spicy. So spicy, the avocado flavor was missing entirely. The Roasted Pineapple Cabbage Slaw was sweet and tangy and light- the best part of the dish. Seems like they really should have thrown in a side of beans to offer some protein. I appreciate the option of a veggie main dish that isn't a salad but I can't see ordering this again.

The second cauliflower based menu item is also vegetarian- possibly even vegan. It's the $11.29 Enchanted Crispy Samosa Sandwich at Red Rose Taverne in Disneyland. This is basically a veggie "burger" with a twist. The crispy veggie patty consists of roasted cauliflower, potatoes, and peas with a hint of curry flavor. It is served on a toasted onion roll layered with a few battered & fried green beans, bibb lettuce, tomato compote, and vegan curry mayonnaise. Plus your choice of pomme frites or sliced apples. This was my first time eating green beans in a sandwich and they added a pleasant crunch.

The lettuce was fresh and crisp, the tomato compote was warm and flavorful. The vegan curry mayonnaise tasted like a creamy curry spread that I wouldn't have guessed was vegan by taste. I might change two things- the roll was a little thick and a sweet chutney would have added a lot. With a side of fries, this dish was a little heavy but felt indulgent. One of the teenagers I was dining with said this was the best thing she'd tried at the parks all day. If you like samosas, there's a pretty good chance you'll like this sandwich. Overall, I give it a thumbs up.
